    5-26 Evening trolling

Stockton is really producing nice fish. Had 2 over 19 inches and 1-24 inch walleye. Banana bait in fire-tiger trolled 2.4 mph, 8-14 fow. Picked up a few crappie, small mouth on top water. Thanks for the tip on fire tiger. Lots of beds. Bass were biting on anything you cast. Frogs to caroline rig.

On Sam Rayburn....Thought I had busted the 10 pound mark but fell short. Weighed her twice and she hit 9 1/2lbs on the money both times. Need a couple like this next weekend in the Texas Team Trail championship!!

    Cape Fair 5/26

This is the first time out since our OA 1 bass tourney!! Its been way to long. I put in at 5:30am to a fog that was heavy in most places. I started fishing right across from the ramp with a buzzbait and had a couple shorts on it. I got to a flatter area with a big deep bend off to the side of the flat and the bass where chasing shad like crazy. I threw a zera spook and had a great time catching large mouth and Kentucky's for about an hour. Biggest was 4.0lbs. I even caught a nice small mouth a little later in the day. Wow - that small mouth crushed it. Now that I think about it - I believe this is my first trifecta day on bass - ever!!! That's cool. Anyway - I didn' even turn my electronics on today so I am not sure what the water temp was. Here are a couple pics. This post has been promoted to an article

Got out at 6:30 (later than planned). Caught 6 one on popper and rest on ned rig. Crazies started exploding out at 8:30. By 10:00 I headed for the ramp and safety.

    Dam area 5/25

Patlock and I launched from moonshine ramp at 5:30am Saturday. Fog was south so we headed to the rock lane marina cove. Boats on first 3 points into the cove from the main lake. We fished a small cove on the right and had a decent 4 hours. Patlock can confirm bill Babler’s post about the smallmouth being angry at the plopper. He was throwing it and a 3 lb SM blew up on it about ten feet from the boat. It was a savage hit and hookup. We saw other blowups as the shad were thick in there. I saw a blowup within casting distance so I tossed a Ned into the center of the water ring. A few seconds later I felt a tick, tick on my line, set the hook and the picture below is what I caught. Nice fight on the 6 lb line. In the 4 hours we caught 15 fish, 4 of them were keepers. Both LM and SM. Caught fish on plopper and Ned but really didn’t thrown anything else. Patlock caught a keeper KY on a Ned and as I was netting it there was another one the same size trying to get at the lure. I tried to dip them both but the one swam deep. At 7:30 am we saw the first wake boat. By 9:30 am we threw up the white flag and surrendered to the boaters. WT was 79.7 when we started and 80.6 when we took out. Water was clear and only one area had green slime. Mike This post has been promoted to an article

Out early on the Upper End

Right at 5:30 this morning I was the first boat out of Holiday Island. I ran down lake to a flat I have been fishing for years and pulled up to one of the two better areas on the flat. On my third cast with a small whopper plopper I was short stringed by a healthy fish. I had no others (I only bought one) so I switched to my custom Top Dollar, Thanks again Hughsey. In the next hour I caught around 15 fish, lost nearly that number, and had as many blow ups that did not connect. Most were small spots but once in a while it would be something different. The best spot, the best largemouth, and my only meanie are pictured below. Around 10:30 I was bobbing more than fishing, so I came in. On the way in I saw two things of note. I saw I guy on plane in a bass boat in an area where the wake boats had chopped the water pretty badly. He had a women riding on the front deck in a pedestal butt seat. I assume it was his wife and concluded he either had a ton of insurance on her and wanted to get rich quick or he wanted to marry someone else and a divorce would take too long. The other item of note was a PWC with three people riding. Each had a greater girth than my own. The machine could not plane and was plowing the water. This post has been promoted to an article

    Committing to a big brown

4 hours in this morning and got 2 more over 21 inches. I’m using anywhere from from 4-8 pound trilene xl, just depending on weight and size of lure.

    Friday night surprise 5/25/18

I went out and fished some Friday night in a small tournament out of Linn Creek. I took my dad out and he fished his first ever bass tournament. The fish weren’t just jumping in the boat for us, but I sure enjoyed having my dad coming up to fish with me. We did manage to catch a pretty huge sack of fish, they just weren’t bass. Lol. My dad caught a five pound drum. We had a couple of bass, then... this: a spoonbill! Caught on a deep diving crankbait right next to the boat. What a fight! I thought surely it had to be a big flathead or something. It just kept stripping line. I finally got it to the boat.

    5-26 Evening trolling

Haven't been catching much bass, but I don't generally run cranks that shallow. Trolling flicker shad in slick mouse and firetiger, 8 out of 10 were on the slick mouse with lead core 18 feet down in 25-40 fow. The big slabs love it, and I'll pick up a walleye now and then. Purple tiger was doing good too until I lost it in a brush pile, need to replace that one, it's always been a productive color. First pic from Thursday night. Quit early as I had enough for dinner in 2 hours. Second pic was from last week. Also caught a 4lb carp on a crappie jig, gave my 10ft rod a workout. Haven't had much luck dropping jigs, the crappie seem awfully scattered right now.

Took a friend from work and his young son yesterday. We only had one rod down in the holder while setting up and already had a fish on. Shortly after a couple more set up and had a double. We had his son busy handing us minnows and putting fish in the kitchen pretty much the whole day.🤣🤣. Went through a lot of dinks yesterday and used every minnow we had in a good helping of a 6 dozen count. Pretty much the same pattern as last trip. 81 degree water temp, stained water to clearing, Rigging double minnow rigs, 20-22 fow, 12-15 feet down was the consistent bite, but there was times they seemed to be scattered throughout the whole water column. Good fishing and great fellowship yesterday. Had a lot of laughs and a good time. Pics below of us three drowned rats back at the house 🤣🤪 God bless and good fishing This post has been promoted to an article

This morning I fished with my school buddy Matt and Mitch Fields. Matt wanted to hit our old stomping grounds from the 90's. We ended with 30 total and 4 fish 19" or bigger.

They are crapping where they eat. First they stopped selling “assault weapons” then they hired anti-gun lobbiest. They have the right to do both things, but many see it as hypocritical for a company to profit off selling firearms, ammo, and accessories while simultaneously lobbying against the laws that make it possible to own them. Now back to the topic 👍

    Hooks in hand

For the first time I had to use the string trick to get a hook out of my left thumb. I’m glad I had my brother in law around to help out. It was a Spro crank bait and we had to cut the split ring to separate the hook from the bait. Once we did that we doubled over some 17lb mono and he yanked while I pushed the shank of the hook down and it popped right out. He had never seen that technique and he couldn’t believe how little it bled afterwards. It really didn’t even hurt except when we tried the first time and he didn’t pull fast enough. That hurt. A lot.

Folks just don’t understand launching rules. I don’t think they are doing it purposely. They just don’t know. I think there is an opportunity to make money somehow. I bet someone could do pretty well on a holiday weekend backing and parking vehicles for folks. Y’all be careful. Safe travels and tight lines.

    Secret trout water

Hit the little creek near my house again with aims on another trout . It didn't disappoint. Caught six this outing one about four pounder broke me off on a stick after an acrobatic display that would rival that Branson show. These fish are wild as beck and I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface in the population.

    Started late, finished early

Best laid plans... Had hoped to leave STL by noon Thursday, fish Thurs eve and Friday early morning till midday. Life got in the way, and I didn't get into Theodosia until 1am. I still was going to try and fish early, but that 5am alarm just hurt too bad. After dealing with dead troller batteries and some other general boat nonsense, I put in at buck creek around 11am. Ramp is very FLAT! Not the launch if you must keep feet and or truck dry. Anyway, to further complicate the day, the opti must have picked up some crap in the water pump during the high water last trip, overheat alarm and very weak stream. So, plans changed to just fishing close. Main lake points were the deal, old lake line to maybe 20', boat in 30'ish. Topwater, jerkbait, 3.3 kietech, Ned, tube, more topwater all caught fish. Quit around 4:30pm when I started seeing weather building, as being out in a storm in a broken boat didn't sound like much fun. 20ish fish to the boat, best 5 were prolly 11 and change, which I didn't feel too bad about given the time of day that I fished and lack of mobility. water temps 80-81, wake boats and pontoons in full swing, at least as full as Bull gets. You can't make this stuff up

Went out at 6:30 again this morning to fish a bit before Church. The fog was worst than it has been the last few days. It got worst at about 7:30 to the point that I could not see my dock although I felt I was only 10 yards from it. I use the gps/locator to find it and fished top water (plopper) around the dock. Caught a few but was hoping to go out to the main lake but it was still way too foggy. I decided to just motor that way really slow (2 mph) and just watch the locator to see if I could note any new structure. I came across a bass boat and wondered how he got there as I know everyone in the area so I assumed he put in at Indian Point. My dock is at the north end of North Indian - that's 4 miles from Indian Point. So I'm going 2 mph heading south in North Indian listening to the the news and watching the locator and gps to make sure I stay in the middle - still in some skinny water knowing that if anyone else would be out there it would be a fisherman either going slow or not moving. All of a sudden I see a boat heading straight for me on plane. I turn hard left and he turns hard left - it was a wake boat pulling a wakeboarder - as the two boat veered away from each other the wakeboarder stuck out his hand to give me five - we almost connected - the look on his face was Oh Yeah. You can't make this stuff up.

Today we slept in and went fishing around 10 am We loaded at 1 pm to bale hay and go to church fish bit Back of boat landed one as I left trolling motor down and turned humminbird on It was a non keeper From there we fished deep water and caught some nice fish I had a couple of 4 pounders I’d say Mary had 13-14 herself lol Now I’m not proud of this but I had a guy pull up on me and get way to close and wake me ?? Mary lost her balance and said a few things I returned the favor 2 miles down I’m over it now ! Fishing shallow and 4 ft Wakes kinda sucks huh bud Now I kinda Sorry now that I didn’t remain patient with him as I try extremely hard with great success

Basspirator's don't have replacement motor cartridges. If your hoses are still in good shape you can reuse them. Porter's in Laurie has that braided PVC though if you wanna refresh it all. It's the best stuff ever for livewell plumbing.

    What's Cooking?

Ribs with Chocolate chili BBQ sauce, Rack of pork ribs. Cut in half and covered in a rub. Vac sealed and put in the sous vide cooker at 149 for 24 to 48 hours. Pulled at 30 hours. Did not have to watch over or baby sit. Allowed us to fish, yard work and entertain our widowed friend. Made sauce. Consisted of various spices, cocoa powder and two dried and rehydrated ancho chilies and called for a new mexico chili but substituted a Palasa chili. Fired up the charcoal grill and when coals were white put on peach wood splits. Grilled and smoked on both sides then slathered on the sauce and did both sides again, Took off and plated with fried potatoes with onion, cheese and jalapenos and peas just for Ness , Meaty, tender and not overly fatty or greasy. Thinking some of the fat rendered out in the sous vide bag. Great meal with plenty of leftovers except for the peas, BilletHead

    Anyone been bass fishing lately?

I bass fished Muddy Twain lake yesterday got to the Allen ramp around 5:30am first boat to the ramp kinda surprised started fishing pigeon roost creek I was throwing a buzzbait the guy I was fishing with was throwing a small plopper the fishing started out slow then picked up as it got light. Got 2 keepers on top water when the sun got up went to plastics tight to the banks around secondary points caught a bunch of small fish with some keepers mixed in. When the sun got high had to start fishing off the bank about 4-6'. Caught around 8-10 keepers biggest around 3lbs most were 2lbs. Fished til 2pm got back to the ramp the main lot was full and the overflow lot was getting there. This was my best day bass fishing Twain. I was expecting it to be my yearly lesson to not fish this lake I guess I'll have to try again. The mid lake area was pretty muddy water temps in the 80s

When I had my drift boat we would head upstream to the cable with a 5 hp. We would anchor out of the current on the far side and fish streamers at night. We had a ball.

I agree so much that I annoy people by repeatedly voicing my concerns about it. Oversized fish are overrated IMO, there's extra weight but less scraping energy. As for LMB I find the fight of a 2.5-3.5 pounder to be more fun than a 4+. As for River Smallies I'll have way more fun scraping with 14-17 inchers than I will 18+ fish. Now big Hybrid stripers are a whole nother thing.....those suckers are just FUN, and the bigger they get the more fun they are.... BUT I don't want them in an impoundment or river that I truly care about.

    Don't Forget!

Love squirrel hunting in the Fall after the ticks and chiggers go to sleep, but never much cared for carrying around dead squirrels for a couple hours on a hot day. I prefer my meat to start cooling off immediatly after it hits the ground. Opening day of dove season is usually too warm for fresh meat also. I guess if a guy packed a cooler to toss them in it would be ok.

    Hooks in hand

Don't let that white slip either, if you do you can end up with an inch long gash across the palm of the hand. The best way I've found to deal with the step method. This is done like this: Put fish in boat, place foot on fish, grab needle nose pliers and remove hook, then gently grasp fish with pliers by the mouth and release back into the water.
