I celebrated my 40th last Wednesday. It has been a tradition of my family and my wife's best friends family to camp to celebrate my birthday. The kids had a great time. My daughter Eva, and her daughter Avery share the same birthday 1 year apart. We fished at a lake separated by a street from our campsite. Avery had never caught a fish before. That changed this weekend. Thanks to @Johnsfolly and his little plastic lure. We even had doubles. Both girls caught a fish at the same time. Avery out caught all of us. I squeeked out 1 green sunfish. My 11 year old boy really, really wanted to catch a 'big' fish. We couldn't find a single bass (did not try the ned). I told him we could use one of the sunfish, cut in half as bait. We waited until almost dusk, casted as far, as we (he) could. He waited a while, then supper was ready. Put his pole in a holder, added a bell and just a few minutes later I seen the pole bend. I called him, he came running. He caught his 'big' fish. A good size channel cat.

    Indian Point Area - 9/17/18

Got out this morning for a couple hours and trolled long gravel run outs after seeing fish on the locator at 30 fow suspended over depth as well as on the bottom. Used a Rapala DT16 shad color crank on metered line using a technique recently learned from a OAF member. WT 82degrees. Caught one Ky, two SM and a nice Walleye plus another keeper Walleye dropped off as I raised it into the boat. One SM came on a football jig around trees in 15fow. Bass were 16 in. plus and the walleye 20 inches. Bobby This post has been promoted to an article

    What's Cooking?

Yeah, they were in the local news a couple years ago. Cute story. Then they faded into obscurity because it turns out almost nobody wants to eat pig noses. Kinda like bung holes @Mitch fposted about a while back. I really don’t have the stomach for the weird stuff. More power to ya if you do. Just not for me. Gimme something in that sweet spot about half way between the nose and the butt hole!

    FIRDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

Fished Friday night and Sunday afternoon on Taney and in between floated the White river in AR all and all a great weekend of fishing. Friday night I had a buddy that has just picked up the fly fishing bug, I have had Heath out a few times with some success but not what it can be during the night. So when I looked and the CORP was going to be running 35mw, I knew it would be a perfect night for a lot of fish being caught, you might be asking yourself why would it be a perfect time for newbie well it is because "night time is the right time". To me fly fishing or well any type of fishing at night will make you a better fisherman because you can't really see anything its all off of sound and feel. Any way we put the boat in around 10pm and motored up to the cable on the south side, oh hey did I mention that I got the I-pilot form Minkota on my boat. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS WHY HAVE I NOT DONE THIS BEFORE NOW!!! We got to the spot I wanted to be put the trolling motor in the water and hit SPOT LOCK and bam just like we were anchored!!! With in 5 minutes or so Heath was hooked on his first fish at night then another and another and another in about a 2 hour time period in that one spot Heath landed almost 30 fish. It was just a fun night, no worries of catching a hog the main purpose was to catch fish and take the stress out of being a new fly fisherman an not catching fish. I know just get to the point of what we were using so you had better sit down we were using MEGA worms and a lighted glow in the dark indicator, I know right can you believe that I WAS A USING A GLOW IN THE DARK INDICATOR:))))) The White MEGA is what they wanted Friday night, had it set at about 6 foot cast it out up stream and drift it down and KAPOW the fish would just explode on it.. We fished till about 3 am fishing several different spots and each spot producing fish, nothing big just a bunch of educational silver bullets. Then there was Saturday more to come on that latter watch for a report in the White River. I got home Sunday around 9:00am from fishing the White river all night thinking I would take a nap not the case as the middle daughter wanted to go fishing, so I turned and burned down to Taney; man she can twist the arm pretty hard!! Got down to Taney and bam 35mw perfect for her to drift fish, drifting mega worms! Around 1pm they cranked it up to 150mw then 200mw, so I just decide that it would be an awesome day to teach her some High water techniques out of a boat. She caught several drifting a Green Mega Worm under an indicator had the mega worm in the high water set at about 8 foot with a bb split shot above so that it would get down in the current. We fished till about 6pm nothing big except for the smiles when she would hook another fish. Tight Lines till next time!! MBKWRH This post has been promoted to an article

    Night Time Report

What a great few weeks it has been low flows at night has created ample fishing opportunities, and as you all know Night Time Is The Right Time. We have been floating a lot and with my real gig, I have not had time to post anything. So this a report covers about 3 or so weeks of fishing the White at least once or twice a week, we have been launching the boats around dark and fishing it hard for about 4-5 hours. I don't have any place to stay so I have been just turning and burning so I am home in time to get my daughters to school. We have been chunking mice and big streamers when the fish won't eat on top we go down below and feed them. For the most part water has been between 7mw and 35mw, I feel the fishing is better between 35 and 50mw though. Just swing and strip it in and boom they will tell you when they are ready to eat, also on the mouse when they come up and miss it just let the fly sit don't move it the fish is still there around it do a couple of small strips and usually they will attack it again but this time they will connect. Some nights we are catching a lot of fish and some nights we don't catch very many worst night I have had so far is 1 fish best night is 13. You might be saying that's not very many either way, however they are all Browns and most nights they are all over 20 inches. To me fishing for Browns at night is the only way to go as that is when they are doing there thing and feeding most big fish are nocturnal and only will feed at night. When fishing the mouse it is very important to cast it out as far as you can the further the better off you are I will tend to have a sore shoulder the next day as I am trying to carry as much line as possible 70-80 feet every cast on a 7 wt. I am using floating line along with about 10 foot of straight 20 pound Seagar fluorocarbon. Let it swing in the current and then when it is straight start stripping 90% of the time when the fish hits it will be at the end of the swing. However that other 10% will follow it right up to the boat and attack it within 15 foot of the boat. Here are some of the Mice that we throw Pat Choen Deer Hair Mouse tied by the man the myth and legend of spinning and stacking deer hair Pat Choen Master Splinter tied by me Mercers Lemming tied by Myself which is no fun tying flies by your self This is a variation of a Tommy Lynch White Bellied Mouse tied By Lisa Bellue There is some truth to my statement that "Night Time is the Right Time" the river it self is not getting hammered by boats or fisherman most nights either on Taney or the White we are the only boats on the water, which will lead to some great fishing. Most nights all we only catch are Browns and good quality healthy fish ones that like to fight and are full of energy. I Don't ever worry about the moon phases never have never will, as I just fish when I can but I will say that lately the new moon phase and the dark nights when the moon is up during the day have produced some of the best nights. The cool thing about the night time mouse bite is that you can actually here and see the fish most of the time eating it. There is one spot on the river that there is enough ambient light pitched in with the full moon that you can actually see the fish charging forward after the mouse, it looks like a baby shark coming after it, pretty cool if you have ever witnessed it you know what I am talking about. As far as streamer fishing we have been using a few articulated flies Kelly Gallup's Fat Head and Tommy Lynch's Drunk and Disorderly have proven to be the top fish catchers. when we fish these again we are fishing 7 to 8wt rods with floating lines if the flows are right and I am still just using straight fluorocarbon 15- 20 pound test. If the water is up say 2 units I will use a full sink line type 4 or 5 just depends on the flows on what I will use. the last few weeks it has been a floating line kind of nights. Lisa and Jeremy Just me showing I still have rowing skills after not owning a drift boat for about 6 years and again me doing nothing at 4am with my good buddy John Holsten Here are a few fish Pictures Brown caught on the Tommy Lynch Variation Tied by Lisa Bellue Lisa Bellue with a nice brown caught on a Kelly Gallup Fat Head We have caught several good fish over the last 2-3 weeks on the White and if you want to catch a good numbers of Browns in one night you need to go down and do it. I sold my drift boat 6 years ago so I am blessed to have good friends at Fly's & Guides and Straight Out Of Cotter that have helped me make it back to the river floating at night if you want to go you should give them a call and they would be more than happy to row you down the river to catch a big brown at night. Lots of stuff to talk about and I have ran out of time to type any more so hope you enjoy this read and till next time look me up on face book at "Up Sauce Creek Fly Fishing & Custom Flies". Osage River Magic

This isn't really only smallmouth fishing but I couldn't find a topic page for the Osage River so here it is. I went out on the Osage yesterday with my girlfriend and our kitten. I had been out on the river a handful of times this summer and had some successful trips but never one like I had yesterday. Earlier this summer I caught my PB Ozark smallmouth at 4.17 from the Osage, my PB spot at 3.63, and my PB meanmouth at 3.05. I never thought it would turn out another PB, but I was throwin' the ol' buzzer around yesterday evening and thought I had snagged a carp when I got bit. Turns out it was a 7.76 Largemouth which broke my old PB that was from a private pond by half a pound. I've included some pics of all of these fish and some other nice fish catches as well. I am very excited to see how this amazing place fishes in the winter. Lastly, I'm the president of the Mizzou Bass Fishing team so I appreciate all of the local support. Thanks guys, Tight Lines.

    Indian Creek 9/17

Got out at dawn again today, started right off throwing a jig, not much going on with it - I had one bass that grabbed it and immediately got hung up in a tree, couldn't get it out, line must have wrapped on something, had to break it off. Had another one pick it up and run towards the boat, hooked it just for a second, felt like a solid fish, but couldn't keep it pinned. There was no wind at all early and I kept seeing some scattered top water activity. Last time I fished I tried to match the hatch (small shad) and threw a Tiny Torpedo at them which they didn't like. Today I did the opposite and threw a 115 Evergreen Shower Blows, which is a big hunk of plastic. Put two 13-14 inch spots in the boat, had a couple of others get off, then they just stopped with the top water activity. Bounced the jig around and tried a shakey head, had a couple of bumps, but they weren't hanging on. Go back to the launch, tie up the boat, look in the water near the dock and see a couple of spots hanging out. Backed the trailer in, looked in the water and they were still there. I thought this was pretty bold of them, so I picked up a drop shot, tossed it out there, got one of them on the 2nd cast, another 13-14 inch spot. I get it up to the dock, and probably a half-dozen bass swim out from underneath the dock and start trying to grab the worm from the hooked bass's mouth. Every one of those fish was as big if not bigger than the one I had hooked, when I lifted the fish out of the water they all went back under the dock. Dangled the worm under the dock, but no takers. Caught two more spots casting off the dock and paralleling the bank with the drop shot. Guy pulled into the lot with a jet ski, so I had to get the boat out and the fun was over. If I could do today over, I would have started right away with the Evergreen SB and once the top water bite stopped, would've fished docks with the drop shot. Surface temp 80.

I ended up floating solo from Hootentown to just be for ethe McCall bridge. Had a nice wake up call about midway through when the nose of my yak got stuck in a shallow riffle. Decide to try and shimmy off the bigger rock in front of me and it didn't go so well. Ended up having the back end continue to get pushed by current enough that it tipped me over. No real danger where I was, but I was barefoot at the time and lost a shoe, lost ugly stick combo, the other half my paddle (was using it split to try and push off the rock), a floating ruler, cooler and my tackle box. Was a couple of riddles close together with a deeper hole in between. Was able to grab my cooler but the tackle box, ruler and half a paddle got away from me. I was lucky to find the tackle box had got stuck on the bank a couple turns down and I dumped the water out and it should all be good for the most part. I may have been able to find the other half my paddle and my ugly stick combo if u fought the current and took the time, but I was hoping to catch up to my tackle box and ruler. Just a reminder to everyone to strap down what you can, especially your phone, since I was by myself it could've been a lot worse. Also don't overlook currie t even if it's only inches deep as If I had lost my whole paddle or gotten a leg pinned or something it could have been much worse. Ended up calling my pickup and had them come get me rather than go to Marble ground liked is planned. I did end up catching 1 nice 15 inch smallmouth before I dumped. If anyone finds half of a no limits kayak paddle, a lime green fishing online tournament ruler or an ugly stick Shakespeare micro lite please let me know.

  43. 1 point
If retired it could be a sweet gig, not a gig for a working man though. They should pay for the truck, pay you, house, feed, and water you well if you are expected to drive a Miss Daisy and keep score.
  44. 1 point
I talked with MLF earlier this year about becoming a boat official with them. It was my understanding at the time that I was just barely close enough to qualify by location for the position. You had to be within 3 hours of Tulsa. You also had to have a truck capable of pulling one of their boats to whatever location and you had to have room in the truck for the camera guy and the angler to go to the launch every day. I'm on the potential list for them going forward, but my work schedule makes it difficult to go for 3-4 weeks a year. Pay has not been discussed yet, but I plan on reaching out to them once this dust settles and pursue it further. I'd consider another line of work if I could supplement my income this way.
  45. 1 point
Alot of formats would be interesting for spectators. Mix it up and do several ! One where the earliest limit scored is 1st place, the second is 2nd place, and so on. Have a big fish division where the biggest fish of the day takes 1st. A race to 120 inches would be a hoot (rounded back to the nearest 1/2"). The possibilities are almost endless and the format switch throughout the year would hold more people's interest over the longest period of time I think. AOY would be the guy who finished best though all the divisions.

    Whites, Hybrids and Stripers?

Here's another thing:. Does anyone ever catch Whites/Hybrids near a dock? Because I don't. I even had a really good point with a drop-off that was one of my best areas....until somebody bought the property, built a house and slapped a dock on it. Ever since that dock got placed there I haven't had a good visit to that point. They seem to hate docks and low bridges and definitely want to see the sky at all times. Can anyone dispute that? Who can I call to request a missle attack on this dock right here? 😉
  47. 1 point
I'm just hearing too much about what people want, and too little about what's best for the fish....and the areas of the lakes. Regardless of whether all caught fish are scored, or only the 3-5-10 keepers are scored, there's no need to haul fish away from the area they were caught from. Nobody longs to see bags full of keeper bass, we all know what a bass looks like. The potential thrill of seeing that is not worth the relocation of millions of fish.
  48. 1 point
I've always thought that every fish should count, first three or five or fifty fish caught weighed or measured and done. Go for average or for total but no culling. Culling fish is like saying all the missed shots in a basketball game are practice shots and giving the shooter a free throw for every miss.

    Osage River Magic

The Osage has really come alive this year. I've heard of several 4+ pound spots and a lot of 5+ largemouth being caught this year. The biggest surprise to me though is the number of nice smallies being caught! Every once in a while somebody would catch a decent one on the Osage, but there have been several 3+ and even 4+ smallies weighed in during tournaments this year. I boated my PB Osage bass last month in a tournament out of St Thomas that weighed 5.43. Caught it on the spinning rod and by sheer luck managed to land it even though it had me so tangled up in a brush pile that we had to snag the line and pull the fish in by hand! Had a couple other big largemouth show themselves that day, but didn't land them The fishing gets better and better the closer you get to Bagnell. Start at Tuscumbia and work your way up. St. Elizabeth area can be decent too, but Tuscumbia on up is definitely my favorite part of the river. Here is a video of our last tournament out of St Thomas. The big one is towards the end.
