Not a lot to report - I caught 8 bass, spots, one smallmouth and a couple of meanmouth. Had one spot that might have been a keeper, the rest were 12-14" fish. 1/2 oz jig, and a tube internally weighted with a 1/8 oz weight on steep banks caught my fish. Nice day, WT was 66-67.

    Oct. 20-21. Slow but decent

Made it down to Table Rock again, finally. Hadn't been since August and was excited to fish deep again. I had heard that guys were catching a few shallow, but I figured that with the thermocline broke up and the fish pretty well scattered everywhere that the deep bite would be the most consistent. We didn't get out on the water until like 3 in the afternoon on Saturday and got off fairly soon after that. Put in at Indian point and I had never seen so many fishing boats on the lake before. Caught one on a drop shot in about 25 ft. Sunday we put in at Mill Creek and my buddy's motor threw a rod after running for about 30 seconds so we fished off the tolling motor all day. Caught 3 keepers early shallower. 2 on and underspin and one on a spinnerbait. Coolest part was that it was a largemouth, smallmouth, and spot. Can't do that just anywhere. Then had a bit of a lull but got onto a good group of fish around noon-one o'clock and caught 5 more keepers 1 largemouth and 4 smallies. Smallies were good ones too. All 17-18 inchers. We were catching them mostly on a shakey head with a 4 inch senka on it in trees that topped out in about 25 foot. I'm fishing Truman tomorrow and Saturday and heading back to Table Rock for a long weekend in mid-Nov. Really hoping that there is a good jerk bait bite. I'll let everyone know how Truman goes this week. I think that lake can be very very good but we'll see. Tight lines.

the bass seem to be in limbo

got out yesterday afternoon back up my way. fished high and low without too much results. what bass we did catch were on a spoon. had 3 keeps and a few dinks and a couple of whites. loaded up before dark and headed down to the cow creek ramp to get in a little night fishing, and had about the same results. had 4 keeps, 2 brownies, 1 lmg, and 1 k. we tried flat stuff, back in coves, bluffs, you name and we tried it. i did notice lots of bass suspended out in the lake at various depth and that is why they are so hard to come by right now. the lake started to turn pretty hard with the colder temps, and then it warmed back up and everything has went into the limbo mode. even though i hate cold weather, that is what we need right now to get out of the limbo mode and back into some more normal patterns. the good part of the trip was seeing some amazing colors that are appearing here and there, and saw a couple of bald eagles. and, to add to that, the moon was nice and bright last night. it was just good to be out and enjoy it all. bo

    Figuring out the ponds...

So hit my ponds day before yesterday mid afternoon for a bit. Water had cleared up quite a bit since I last fished it. Fish were spooky and almost had to sneak up on them. Fish were up on top and schooled up too. I watched 9 bass just milling around all up in the banks... They trolled up and down back and forth but all stuck together. Figured with the cold weather they would be going deep, but the bass here have been consistent in holding up by the banks all year so what do I know lol... The fry from this years spawn are also abundant and in the 3 to 4 inch range. I should of went back home and grabbed my fly rod as the smaller bass and blue Gill were smashing bugs on the surface. I threw a craw and a worm for a bit, Caught a handful, nothing huge but was good to feel a tug on the line.

Moral of the story: Don’t go to Bennett Springs. You’ll just get angry. Don’t fish angry. Mitch’s hellgrammite color washed out in Friday’s rain proved fruitful in Sunday’s sun.

    10/22 Crappie Report

Fished from late morning until about 6 pm and struggled. Caught a decent amount of dinks and a few white bass. Ended up with three keeper crappie that were no-doubters. Fished the mid-lake region and hit a lot of brush piles. Most of my focus was on piles near creek channels (especially bends), but did also fish piles well back into creeks. Marked quite a few fish on channel drops around 24 fow, but could not get any to bite. The three keepers came off of one pile that was fairly close to the creek channel just into a cove. Caught them around 16 foot down in 19-21 fow on jigs. I am honestly not sure if they came out of the pile, or if they were following shad through. All three were white crappie. Water temps were 61-64 degrees. Hopefully you all can figure them out!

    First Time on the Meramec

Hello, my Dad and I fished out of Meramec State Park on Sunday. This was our first trip to the Meramec with my Blazer jet boat. We fished the bluffs 1/2 mile above and below the park ramp and had a great day. We started about 1PM and fished till 6PM. We caught smallmouth, largemouth, spotted bass, crappie and goggle eye. My Dad was using a green color small shad rap and I rotated between a 3" white swimbait and a whopper plopper. The best smallmouth we had stalked and devoured the plopper but came off, he was probably 15" or so...all in all, we had about 20 fish for the day. The water was moving pretty good but was a little skinny in spots. We saw one canoe and that was it for the day. Next time, we may try Onondaga or further downstream (St. Clair).

Went out Sunday started calm but the wind probably blew out 180 degrees by 9:30. Decided to stay out until noon enjoying the weather before calling it quits. Not a complete loss of a day....as I was walking out via the gravel road I jumped 20+ quail out of the ditch. My heart was in my throat before they flew out shotgun range. Made a mental note, will likely be back November 1. Going a little more mobile this coming Saturday to scout around in prep for an all day sit this Sunday. Trying to convince myself to bring out the struggle stick over my compound...but will likely wait until I have a doe in the freezer and get out of my current "meat-crisis".

    Jigfest 2018!

I am planning on making the reservations tomorrow. Combined cost of the River Lodge and Cedar Gables is $1800 for the 3 nights. We have 12 confirmed with another 3 or 4 possible. Being conservative and going with 12, that works out to $150 per person for the 3 nights. If anyone has any objections, now is the time to voice them, otherwise I will assume all is well with everyone and make the reservations.

    Turnover

Slothman and I had a go at it in the shallows this evening. In general the action was very slow but we had a few quality bites on a swim jig. I think given a full 6-8 hour day we could put together a pretty solid limit. The first keeper taught us that there's no such thing as "too shallow" right now.

    Custom painting lures

so I dabble with painting mostly in pursuit of wart colors that have changed over time or tweaking jerkbaits. I messed around putting a hand drawn scale pattern on unpainted and primed blanks with a sharpie. I think it works ok. Epoxy top coat messed with visibility. Enamel was great. Looking for thoughts and further tweaks. Would like epoxy durability. Pics are no top coat and finally with enamel.

Tks Quill, I'm out of the dam area tomorrow and will report. I have been hearing the dreaded talk about the Umbrella coming into play with the fish up and all over the water column, but won't use it tomorrow. Rumor has it that the top 2 places in the Joe Bass event this past weekend were throwing it. I know second place was for sure.

Probably in 30 yrs. this was my toughest morning on the Rock. Started at Old 86 with 2 very mature fishermen, a husband and wife team that were basically zebco 33 type folks and just could not get anything to work. I mean nothing including live bait. Other guides telling me the live bait deal is just terrible with small gills stealing your bait at any water depth. It's true. used 3 dozen crawlers and never had a bass bite on them. They caught gills from 15' to the deepest gill coming on the bottom at close to 70' All were just small bait stealers and were thru the entire water column, top to bottom. Guys here are catching a few on a Hard head and a hula grub along with swimming a Keitech or swimming a small 3/8 jig and small trailer, and a Rock Crawler but that would have been above our pay grade this morning. Right now this lake is just flat Brutal and that's from daylight till 8 AM. It gets hard later in the day. Good Luck

Thanks Dan! Those fish are under my skin ever since that first trip. I'm working on a musky trip somewhere, possibly Pomme, for Sunday. Lots of encounters to keep me coming back, but it's been a while since I held one. Love to change that soon!

    Scored on my Managed Hunt

Me, dad and four others were drawn for the Peck Ranch managed archery hunt again this year. Overall, the hunting was slow, but I did finally harvest a doe Sunday evening. Just in case you aren't familiar with Peck Ranch, this is where MDC reintroduced elk several years ago. I've seen plenty of them over the years while putting in for the managed hunts down there, but this is the first time I actually saw a couple big bulls. I had two feeding in front of me along with another bugling down in the timber just before I shot the doe. Some elk actually spooked her right to me.

We spent another day in the park yesterday. Strictly fished drys all day, and determined shortly after lunch (Hillbilly Burger is a chithole btw) that the pattern was irrelevant as long as it was a #16 on 6x. Zone 1 had some fairly decent sized fish, but Z2 is absolutely loaded with greedy little farts making it rather annoying. I did stick one nice brown in Z2 but he took me so by surprise that I blew it on the first run and he broke off. That was the only brown we saw all day. We walked the hatchery raceways, looks like they are operating at 1/5 of their capacity and the size of the fish in the raceways is very small. I wonder why they expanded their operation so much... but aren't utilizing it? Seems like such a waste. What's the problem? We didn't see anyone toting a stringer, and come to think of it....the weekend before when we were there I didn't see anyone keeping any either. So where are all the fish going?

    Oct. 20-21. Slow but decent

and the moral to the story of having no motor is you learned a lot about fishing what is in front of you. many spend to much time running from spot to spot, and could learn a lot more by fishing what is in front of them. just pretend that the water that is in eye sight is a big pond, and that is all you have to fish. now go figure out how to catch what is in your pond. it will make you become a better fish catcher because you will learn how to fish the entire water column not just one part of it. bo

    Heritage Days?

We went visited with Marie at the Nursing Home, whole different person. She didn't recognize anyone. She had a thing for me because I reminded her of her late Husband. She got White for a last name because her Dad killed a Guy in Arkansas was close to the White River so decided to take White as a last name. oneshot

Well last night the Hatchery Manager made it a point to say they are releasing same size of Trout as ever. I know I don't believe last few years they have been stocking the river as in the past. From what was said they are going to try and save the Bridge down at the far end if not making it better for safety reasons. But they are going to do away with the Pool, thing is I believe people camping there being a State Park they expect a Pool. oneshot

On a float last Fall, a week or so after a stocking there were dead gigged rainbows littering the bottom for 3 miles above Barclay. I called MDC and reported it, then asked some folks that I know near there to watch for any conservation vehicles (particularly one with a jet boat in tow). Almost two weeks afterwards they saw one guy in a MDC truck go by...but he came right back out less than 10 minutes later. So in all actuality, until they decide to take the illegal gigging thing serious then it probably doesn't matter.

I experienced the same thing dragging a shaky head around in the rocks on Saturday. Seemed to draw a lot of attention but from the wrong fish. Flipping a 1/2oz jig into the right pile got me clobbered though, so it may have been more of a reaction deal. Conditions Sunday looked tougher so I opted for the breakfast table. 😊

The bite was way off this weekend. Took 14 to win DuPo and 17 to win USA bassin Sunday. We had 4 keepers Saturday lost 2 at the boat that were just holing the end of the worm. Even the blue gill and war mouth weren’t hitting the shakey head at the bank.

    I'm still confused

4 key baits in the BASS. The bait that won the derby was a Spro Rock Crawler in Red Craw fished by Jared Lintner. I believe he caught all his keepers on it. Maybe one or two others on a jig or a WP. Did not fish the same water any of the 3 days. Jared is a very close friend of Mike McClelland's I know they fished several days together during the allowed practice, and I spoke with Mike quite a bit. That kind of help is what you need this time of the year to win here. When you have the Table Rock Hammer helping you, and you listen probably enough said. I try and keep a couple of colors in stock most of the time. Drop shot with a 2.8 inch Keitech either on a jig head or a drop shot hook 3/8 to 1/2 0z. wt.. Best drop shot bite was 40' to 50' over trees in the creeks. Whopper Plopper and a buzz bait early 3/4 oz. blade fished deep in the cedars, not buzzed thru the tops. If you were not losing spinner baits you were not fishing it correctly. Sumrall lost 8 blades the first day and I think 5 the second day so he lost 13 spinnerbaits in 2 days. Remember I said I didn't not do what he was doing. If I did that with guide clients I would have to do odd jobs to pay for the baits. or get a bank loan. The blade pattern was completely over Friday and anyone throwing it Saturday got a very poor result. Ie the Friday Leader. For the last several days the bite of any kind is pretty much over by 9;30. You don't have them by then, its tough going. Yes you may get lucky, but best bet is to catch them early if you can. Good Luck

thanks guys. water looked great this weekend, managed three saturday morning over a couple hours. two dinks on a plopper at first light from the yak, and a small keeper from a shallow brush pile under a cable on a jig. family obligations kept me off the water after that, but anyone with a boat and milk run of shallow piles should have done pretty good. I did notice a little froth at the water's edge Sunday morning, wouldn't be surprised if the turnover starts here in a few weeks.

Didn't throw topwater long because it was really shallow for the most part. Had one nice smallie on a ned rig jig. Caught some other tiny ones and a few rock bass. Slower day for the most part and it was windy and cold in the shade for most of that stretch.

Heading down tomorrow morning to spend a week so I blame myself for the thousand tournament boats and crappy fishing. We missed our September trip for the first time in probably 25 years due to a sick pup but that week pretty much always sucked for fishing anyway. Was hoping for better next week but I'm grateful and glad to get at least one trip in before the snowballs start flying. Besides, I can now with a clear conscience tie on a spinnerbait and shamelessly pound the windy banks all week without the distraction of constantly thinking I should be out fishing deep stuff! Worst case scenario the golf courses oughta be in fantastic shape and it's a lot easier to keep beer cold this time of the year so there's that.........
