My first time fishing the Little Piney. Went to the Lane Spring Campground. Started about 10:30 am and fished until 4:00 pm. Water was very clear. Caught 30 trout total but most of them were dinks. I had 5 or 6 decent sized ones in the 9 to 12 inch range. Caught the majority on an elk hair caddis in size 16. The second most popular was a BH prince hare nymph in size 12. It was a beautiful day with sunshine and a high of 73. I wish I lived closer. 4 hour drive oneway is a killer.

Don't forget the best part that you experienced/ helped your 86 year old Grandpa catch his personal best walleye. Had a great trip. Stayed at cabins on Stockton lake which met our needs very well.

    Big Bash Bass this weekend

I actually pulled up to a main lake point that has big brush pile that is about 15-20 deep and threw my deep running crankbait to come through it and ended up getting 5 fish there and 3 of them were keepers. Every time i felt it hit the brush and come through i would get a fish. There were two guys fishing in a really nice Nitro with dual power poles across the point from me and after i caught those fish they came over slowly and said hope you don't mind we came over but man we had to know what you're doing. They said we been fishing all day and not gotten squat and they were pre-fishing for this Costa tournament this weekend and we are not from around here and said we see you pull up and catch 5. So I showed them the crankbait and we talked a bit and i wished them luck. One thing i know from experience, i could pull up to that point 5 different times and not get anything and then on the 6th time they have decided to feed and they eat whatever is pitched in there and it can be fun.

We fished from KC to Indian point. We caught 8-9 but only one keep 3 lb smallie on a finesse jig. Topwater bite was not around. The jig was the most productive. The LM my dad caught on a underspin in a dock slip pre-fishing. The spot was 14.5" caught out of a cedar tree on a bluff wall.

    Mallard flank feathers

I tie a lot of jigs using mallard flank or gadwall feathers, killer jigs for crappie, bass and about anything else. If you think about it send me some feathers from the ducks you harvest and I will tie some jigs for you in exchange for the feathers.

There was a time I was obsessed with a fly-in fishing trip to Canada but I don't think about that too much, anymore. Candy and I took dog-sleds to the boundary waters with a guide and ice-fished for Northerns and did well. This year I fished the Blackfoot River in Montana (although I was well aware I looked like I had no idea what I was doing). And deep-sea fishing does not appeal to me. I guess the item that is in my bucket list is to fish with a fitness-model. I know that once she see's my Chrysler bass boat she won't be able to wait to go.

    Dam area 10/3-10/6

Was waiting for @MO Huzgr to update on our trip this weekend but got tired of waiting. Hate a great few days of fishing the dam area points on my first trip to Stockton. Primarily targeting Walleye but more than happy to catch bass along the way, or whatever else wanted to bite. Didn't take long to become impressed with the quality of the fishery in both size and numbers. Over the few days of fishing we caught, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, sunfish, catfish, white bass, and drum in abundance. Had success with a variety of lures/techniques but focused primarily on jig/crawler, Flicker Shad, Bomber 200, and a 3.8 Keitech on 1/4 oz white head. Great times and look forward to returning when possible! Also found interest in hunting the area, seems like a great spot to find unpressured public land. Anybody ever try? View full article

    Big Bash Bass this weekend

Went out on the shallow flats after some Whites yesterday evening and failed to connect with any, but did catch 3 keeper LM and 6-8 shorts (where the Whites SHOULD BE) in no time at all. No brush or cover anywhere close, so they are just cruising the shallow open water. I was hucking streamers on the 7wt., but if I was looking to catch a limit of green bass today I'd get out there and fan cast a 1/2oz. RedEye Shad over 3-7 foot of water.

If you guys think that I'm even looking at any of those photos much less opening a friggin' video you're nuts! Again, none of you seem to be showing a lick of respect for my sensitivity issues. Now I'm going to have to go to my safe space and cuddle with my stuffed puppies and maybe get creative with my play dough........ Much too stressed to even think of crayons and coloring. Big M area, October 9

I roll into Big M at about 0645 and there's a truck by the ramp. There's a guy there outside his truck, and he's wearing a jersey, except it looks like one of those MLF referee jerseys- has black and white striped sleeves. Anyway he made a few casts then drove over to the other side of the park and went fishing on the bank over there. Nothing wrong with jerseys or fishing off the bank, but seeing someone in the refs jersey wasn't something I have ever seen except on TV. I got the boat in the water and got out of there pretty fast, didn't want to get a 2 minute penalty. But the fishing was pretty good today - got a lot of bites, had a problem converting those bites into fish in the boat but I bet I had at least 50 bites and out of all those bites I only managed to boat 15 of them. I had a good smallmouth on a Whopper Plopper that threw the Plopper right next to the boat. Had another keeper sized smallie get off a crank, and to add insult to injury, a spot then grabbed the crank and it got off too! Lost another good smallie on a shaky head. Shaky head was the best bait for me today, 6 inch Roboworm on a 1/8 oz head. Got a couple on the plopper, a couple of drop shot fish, and a couple on a crank. Didn't find many drop shot fish today, there were a couple out there, but couldn't find them like last week. Most of my bites were in 5-15 FOW, and the best banks had wind on them. Steep banks and rocky points with wind were good today. Saw a bass boat out there today off the bank on a flat, looked to be drop shot fishing. 5 guys in the boat. I am thinking it could've been a guide with 4 clients. Surface temp 73. Air temp was 41 when I launched!

    Monday, 10/7

Got on the water about 8:45 and had two limits of crappie before 11. We were fishing some brush piles when fish came up and hit the shad and this nice largemouth took it upon himself to hit my buddies crankbait. We were having so much fun catching and releasing keeper crappie we just couldnโ€™t quit and finally got off the water around 1 oโ€™clock. Jigs in 8 to 18 feet, 72 degree water. What a beautiful day of fall weather fishing. Tight Lines!

    Outboards to avoid...

Rather than give you a list of certain outboards that I wouldn't want to own personally, I'll just say that all of my Johnson/Evinrude customers are noticably happier, not seen nearly as often, and they trade motors way less often than all of the others. I used to be able to say the same for Yamaha 2-stroke owners ....but lately it is getting harder and harder to find parts for them. Had a blown Yamaha 70 in here last Spring that I couldn't buy pistons or a replacement powerhead for. Could get RINGS but no pistons ๐Ÿ™„ We found a slightly older blown Evinrude 70 with controls CHEAP, rebuilt it, and I haven't heard from them since. He sends his neighbor's and friends to me so he must be happy. ๐Ÿ˜Š

I may not be the best to answer this question due to the amount of times I get to fish the lake, but here goes. I would assume it would change often due to water flow, time of year, time of day, and how you like to fish. For us we started at fall creek and on our first drift we went all the way to Cooper Creek boat ramp. We had a few flurries of action along the way and as the current felt like it was getting slower, we decided to motor back up. On the second drift we stopped at Lilleys, third trip we stopped just below Trout Hollow. After that we decided to run down towards that landing and fish around there and get lunch. After lunch we drifted from the island through the bridges and to the Fish House. We caught some fish at every stop, but we liked the first drift from fall creek to just above Lilleys the best for us. This was the fastest moving water and we liked that. The drift from the Island to the Fish House was the slowest drift, but we still caught fish there too. I normally fish for bass and I like to use crank baits, so I am usually moving when I fish. That may be why I liked the upper drift the best. If you normally fished for catfish or crappie, you may like the slower drifts. As far as why we stopped where we did, we would stop when the bites were slowing up drastically. If there was a long time between bites, it was time to move to where the bites were. It is kind of crazy that most of the bites were in the same general areas every time.

    Drifting below fall creek

I took several friends down over the weekend for some good times and good fishing. We started Friday drifting below fall creek. We threw just about everything to start with, power worms, jigs, jerk baits and worms. It took us until about 11 to realize that drifting the crawlers was going to be the best bet for numbers. We were using a #6 circle hook and #5 round split shot on 4 lb mono and a 4lb floro leader. The circle hook helps with very few of them getting hooked deep. I have started adding a bobber stop below the weight to help prevent the weight from slipping down to the hook. This way I don't have to crimp the split shot down so hard it kinks the line. We ended up with about 20-25 fish on Friday, mostly on worms. Went back out Saturday and only used worms. We found out late on Friday that pinching the worm into 1/3 instead of 1/2 got us more bites. I think that the smaller worm would make them get it all the way in the mouth. When using 1/2 worm, we got a ton of tugs but not as many commits. We went through 3 boxes of 18 worms in 2 days, pinching them in 1/2 and 1/3. We had about 45-50 fish on Saturday. With the rain on Sunday, we didn't go back out. We had a great weekend and loved spending time with good friends.

I am still looking to buy another used boat. Ive been pretty lucky with the past 4 used boats but I did get burned on a used motorcycle once... SO now I am older & more cautious with my retirement money. Is the boat version of Carfax worth it ? There is a company called boathistoryreport.com that is very similar to carfax but for boats. They provide you with a history report (their "carfax") and it contains information like if the boat was in an accident, salvaged, damaged in a hurricane and several other features. Not to self... Check vin numbers twice VERY carefully (dont ask how I know this). Thanks for your replies. Will

    What's Cooking?

It's still cooking. I used some a couple of weeks ago at the home of the guy that gave it to me. It's really good, another variation of a fruit wood. Super dense (they used it to make golf club heads back when) and burns a long time. As much as I like hickory, I find myself using fruit wood more these days. I just like what I think is a little lighter smoke flavor and can actually pick up a hint of apple, cherry or whatever. The persimmon used today was about 1" thick branches, soaked for an hour or so before going on the fire.

Attached a few more pics. As someone who has never been there...the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area lakes look very intriguing...since they are close to St. Louis. What are your guys' experiences and reviews of those lakes? Are they worth going to? Too much pressure, or not too crowded?
