With heavy rain in the forecast, and the expected rise in the water level at TR, parking spots at the ramps will be limited. Therefore the COE has requested that boat owners use the least amount of space possible to park their rigs. Here's the pic they posted of the recommended way to park.

    Gonna brag for a minute

My son and I snuck out to the stream for a couple hours last night and he caught his first wild trout....on a fly that he tied no less. Needless to say he was very excited. The water was pretty high but we managed to land a few fish anyway.

So water was off again tonight. Took some of my first timer buddies out to the shelf by rebar again and we fished up by the Dam. Bite on jerks started off slow but then picked up. Id call it a really good night, but not a great night. We threw a few different flavors of SS606 and some other generic WLures. Same cadence as last night with a super slow presentation and occasional jerk. Had the first casualty too of a white pearl SS606 when Ray had a big one break off 10lb braid... fish was smoking drag and then Bam it was gone. Never got a decent look at it. That white one and the sculpin pattern were the hot tickets. Ray's first time night fishing with me and I think he had 7 or 8 nice solid bows and a smallmouth. My other buddy Kev also caught a keeper walleye that was puking up shad. Again the bows were just absolute tanks. Fought hard and super healthy. Not a single Brownie from any of us. Im still gathering pics from the 6 of us, but here's a few. We are calling it as it's allegedly going to storm tonight and physically we are flat worn out going on about 2 or 3 hours of naps since Wednesday morning. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day though. Just a fantastic day spent with my boys. Will be back in boats tomorrow.

    Walleye report

These fronts r coming so fast the walleye have gotten a little difficult for me. Today had six keepers 2 shorts. Had 3 keepers bottom bouncing in 12 to 16 ft. Pulling at about .8 mph. Using new floating butterfly blade from northland. The r very good at keeping you from getting hung up as much. The other 3 keepers came on pitching jig and plastics to the normal pool bank line. About 5 ft deep. Working out to about 10 ft.

    Lake levels

Looks like the lake level is headed up due to all the rain. I hope it doesn't get too high because when everyone was catching two fish per hook, I couldn't get to my boat without using another boat! We are heading down next weekend for an extended stay (along with probably 60,000 of my closest friends😆). The wife and I came two weeks ago to do a little meat fishing and did well, but we lost two crappie to some unemployed otters😡. Hopefully the fishing will still be good, I can reach my boat on the dock, the tackle I've been stockpiling based on everyone reports will still be good and I can find a small piece of quite water to fish! If you see a silver ranger angler out, please stop by! oh, does anyone know when Vernon is going home? I need to know if I need to pack all of our rain gear!! 😂🤣😂 Keep all the reports coming and thanks for all the information!! Just please don't tell me that the fish have changed their minds on what they will bite! I can't afford to buy more tackle, besides I not sure I could fit more into my truck!

Paul Dallas used to get asked a lot of dumb questions back on the old Conservation Cafe, but his time commitments to his sponsors and such, , ,, and dealing with his debilitating arthritis of late due to catching so many mammoth sized bass and trout....he couldn’t keep up with timely response, especially during those long periods of unjust incarceration. He asks that his fans forgive him, and to respect his privacy, particularly his loyal base in Japan whom he loves and is preparing an exclusive at-home pay per view event which will be costly but worth every penny or Yen. Stay tuned........

    Talents

Warning picture heavy, We have members on here with some real talent. those that draw wildlife and paint. Those that paint lures, tie and create flies. Woodworkers too. I bet there is more out there that have not come forward. Then we find others not out there. I found one. His choice of medium for his art are antlers. Solid core antlers like whitetail deer. When I ran upon his work I was really amazed. We visited some on his work. I told him I had a couple long tines off of a moose palm. I kept a couple more of them, gave away the rest of the palm and @duckydoty was gifted the base to make a billet for percussion work making points. He was interested in the two tines I had left so I took them to him. His eyes lit up and I could look in his eyes and see the wheels in his brain begin to turn. A trait all artists have. A real tell tale. He asked what do you want for them? I said I like to trade what do you think? We can do that as he peered into his showcase. I said how about you make me something? I could maybe do that. Ok how about you work one of these for me and you keep the other? Yes lets do that and a shake of the hand sealed the deal. So what do you want? I said a totem. Again the cogs began to turn I was ready to see smoke come out of his ears. So what on it? I said I would like to see a raven incorporated in it plus keep the length of the tine. 14+ inches. Ok I will work up some plans and send you a text with my ideas. Good deal I am good with that. This was last Saturday. So Wednesday I get a text and picture. "I'm getting there decided to just get it going" I liked it! Then yesterday Thursday afternoon I get a pic and "I got it done" So Pat and I loaded up to retrieve my trade. I was more than pleased and made sure it was signed. View of all sides. Snake tail coiled at the top and snake body down the back with snake head going in and out the bottom figure mouth at bottom. Raven top figure and a horned beast at the middle. My new friend Paul with the totem, Then pictures of his work. Poor pics but you can get the idea of his stuff in here. One thing that reminded me instantly of out OAF paddlefish expert @Seth, Ever wonder what is under the morels as you pinch them off at ground level?, I think I came out smelling like a rose in this deal! I will be knapping a couple points for him. He deserves more from my end and perhaps he could incorporate them in a future antler carving? Who knows as the smoke begins to roll out as he ponders!

You’re in luck! We’re heading home tomorrow morning so I’m sure conditions will improve dramatically once we’ve cleared downrange. Consider today just a little going away gift to remember us by😉. Kinda curious what the total rainfall since last Thursday has been as well as the median daily temperatures. Personally, we think this week just might represent some of our finest work - highlighted by Monday and Tuesday! As for the fishing we’re the last two guys you should ask!

Maryland has been in a state of lockdown and that only sustenance fishing was allowed while using the necessary social distancing guidelines. After this trip the stated allowed recreational fishing and this Friday will open up more things like barber shops, stores, some restaurants, etc.. Anyway back during the full lockdown we took out a few of my wife's crab traps, brandishing our face masks, armed with hand sanitizer, and went to a spot that we have had good luck in the past. Usually Livie and I usually fish while my wife tends the traps. No different on this trip. We were bottom fishing with bloodworms on high/low rigs hoping for some white or silver perch that we could take home for dinner. We caught quite a few silver perch last fall, but I suspect that in late summer through fall that there is a higher salinity in this creek than in the spring and that there may not be too many silver perch around. White perch seem to be common enough to suspect that we might catch a meal's worth. BUT that was not the case. We have had one of the coldest springs from April through the first part of May. So I blame the poor water temp on us not being able to secure any legal fish for dinner. We did catch some sublegal stripers, which was nice after not being able to fish for over 4 weeks . Though we both caught three stripers, but missed out on any keeper fish. I did land a keeper blue crab and my wife scored on five others. So can't complain too much. The crabs were delicious! We did get in a little microfishing the next day. Livie caught her first breeding male sheepshead minnow. Photo doesn't do its coloration much justice.

    Found fish in trees

I use a ball style shakey head. We pour them without the screw lock, and with an EWG style Mustad hook, specifically for the stupid tube. Might not work with a Tender Tube. We run them with flip tubes, generally. Easiest way to rig it is to just make a slit on what will be the bottom of the tube, put the head in and through, and super glue it in and shut. Then TX rig the hook. We also use wire guard heads on our tubes. Those hook up a little better than the stupids. Fish will eat a tube all the way to their tail, especially as you get into post spawn in May and June. Maybe the worst of all baits about that. Only thing close is a split shot with a doctor or fry.

    2020 Garden Thread.

I haven't gardened since the 90's. In Eureka, the house we owned was built on the side of a 45 degree rock pile and the deer ate anything except bitter flowers. Nancy and I use pots on the patio. In our new place we have added pots and put in a few other items. The tomatoes are bush style cherry. The cumbers are a bush style pickle variety. The peas are sugar snaps. The herbs will include basil, which right now has just germinated. Note: The parsley is a holdover from last year and I am fighting it. It wants to bolt. I may give up and replant. The other herbs, except the basil, all survived the winter as well. I will also thin the cukes and tomatoes shortly.

Come on down Ryan! Supposed to possibly have water off again tonight. They just turned on a bunch. Gonna grab a quick nap to recharge for tonight. Did really well on the flats by point Royale on a 3/32 orange head sculpin. Picked up 10 or so in less than an hour. Other guys were catching too. A rare daytime fish for me lol

I guided today,. 7 to 1. We all got totally soaked and the fish did not bite worth a Poop. Ended a 6 hr. day with 6 keepers 4 shorts and some gogs. You can see the water going up, launched at Baxter and it was amazing how much farther it was up the ramp between 7 and 1. The carp are on the bank and there is a huge shad spawn going on up there too, but its hard to get to and I really did not see any fish smacking the shad.

    Above Cape Fair

I had a new jig that I’ve been working on and decided to run down and give it a try. I did not go above Martin Hollow. The farther up I went the more debris I found and the water went from off color to almost muddy. I caught a few bass none of which were picture worthy. The water was 58° and 59° every where I went. I caught a few KYs that had not spawned. There were few rigs at the ramp and few at the other launch sites. With the added rain I think I will take Cape Fair off my list of places to go for a while. Back to the drawing board on the jig. I lost too many of them.

    What's Cooking?

Nancy and I have subscribed to a local farm operation. Every other week we receive a bag of whatever veg has grown or has been sourced. Last time the delivery included the egg plant I put in two post meals. This time we have a plethora of poblano peppers and tomatillos. Don't know why, but it is what it is. Roasted salsa verde is on my horizon. I think I will sous vide a pork tenderloin then sear it and some potato shreds on the flat top tonight. The lettuce that was included (of course) will be the base for the radish and orange salad. Film at 11.

Medical workers are getting it wearing full ppe, so nothing short of a biological suit will prevent contracting it. Wash your hands, stay 6' away, don't go around any sickos.

    Wood or Gas?

We ended up going with a high end American Standard Platinum air source system since it was a retrofit. If we ever build a new house then we will probably go with ground source. Our place was pretty cheap to heat and cool on the old system so I don't expect we'll be saving all that much with the new system over all. Our decision was based more so on the financing terms (0% for 72 months) and comfort level that it would provide versus going with a lower end system. The home is a lot more comfortable now that the air is constantly circulating at low speeds instead of being off or blowing full speed like on the old system.

    Caddis hatch still good 5/14

This morning started out pretty slow with lots of midges hatching and only a few trout coming up for them. Then around 10 the caddis started popping and within a few minutes there were trout everywhere. It's amazing how quickly the trout react to a caddis hatch, almost like someone rang the dinner bell. Caught lots of rainbows, 1 cutthroat around 15" and a pretty brook trout that was 12". No browns so I missed the slam. Caught a few early on a size 20 parachute Adams and then switched to a size 16 elk hair caddis later. Here's a couple of the better rainbows...

    Ned rods

The nice thing about Ned specific gear, is it doesn't have to be that expensive. The rod it takes to feel a bite on a jig in 30 feet of water, or to feel a fish pick up a Crig, or for that matter to wind the deep mag crankbaits on ledges in 20+ feet of water and not have to have rotator cuff surgery at the end of a day are all way more expensive than what we are talking about for Ned specific gear. Yes, a guy could catch bass year round with one medium action spinning rig, and two 7' medium heavy casting sticks. Just like a golfer could probably get through 18 holes with a driver and a putter. For those of us who can afford to though, having the proper tools in the shed makes it easier to overcome our shortcomings in skill. Does it get out of hand? Yep. Does it also make a difference in fish caught, absolutely.

    2020 Garden Thread.

Been kinda bummed about the garden because all the cold/cool weather has stalled everything out. Gave everything a dose of Miracle Grow last weekend. Finally got temps up over 65 this week. Between that and the feeding things just seemed to pop the second half of this week. Been pulling a few small radishes, lettuce is getting fairly close. Still have one sickly looking tomato though -- a Gold Rush Currant, my first try with a currant tomato. Won't be able to replace that if it croaks so may go get another Sun Gold cherry to replace it this weekend if they still have them at the nursery. Swiss chard and beets planted 4/11 are popping, but slooow. Succession planting of lettuce was done 4/25 and there's barely any action. Sugar Bon snap peas never germinated so replanted that section with Sugar Ann on 5/8, but they're taking their sweet time. One section of bush beans (Dragon Tongue) looks great, the other section (Kentucky Wonder Bush) is sparse. Ground cherries got singed by the frost 5/9 and are looking pretty rough. Lost about ¾ of our last gooseberry bush over the winter. Have a branch buried in a pot of soil and it's starting to root. Will transplant that at some point -- need to research that some. Last night we finally got the rain they've been threatening since Tuesday. Warmer weather is coming too. I'll probably be a lot happier with what I see out there in a few days.

Last weekend, I was spot locked on a really windy Bluff end. We were catching lots of bass with a dead stick retrieve along the edge of the boulders as the waves crashed over them. I watched a married couple as they fished past me with bait casters & big TRDs. They caught diddly squat. Moving too fast, overworking the bait, not casting shallow enough, etc. Lesson learned
