Well we didn't have you to guide to the big fish. So we just plunked around and did the best we could.

Took the boy out for a quick paddle on Shoal Creek below Neosho. Fishing was ok, should have been better, but we had a blast and still managed to get tight more than enough. He got a well deserved nap on the way home!

The weather was a little rough but the fishing and food were good!
I met up with a high school buddy that I still fish with throughout the year. We fish mainly for walleye on one lake and trout on Taney.
He brought his young daughter on this trip to get her, her first trout. Picked a beautiful weekend to do it. But she was more than a trooper about it!
Friday evening we met up with JTram, his wife and Brian and all saddled up and went in town for a bite to eat. A little Joe's Crab Shack hit the spot.
Got to bed late and got up early. I'm not a teenager anymore even though I act like it. We cooked some breakfast and then met up with Phil and Duane. A plan of attact was hatched and we quickly headed up stream.
The fish started cooperating immediently. They weren't just jumping in the boat but we were kept fairly busy.
We all stopped fishing about 10:30 and headed back to the resort for some fantastic food! Smoked venison, pheasant, bbq pork, beans, corn, baked potato, salad. WOWZA good!!
The only downside to this weekend was the weather. It didn't bother the fishing but it cut the trip in half and made for a tough trip home. I should have left a little earlier than I did.
Every one caught fish. It was a fun day and a fun trip. I think Phil may be going to do this again next year. If so, I'll be the first to sign up!
A huge thanks to Phil for hosting this event.
Now for a few cockeyed pics unless you're viewing from your phone.

I saw that the water had finally been off for a bit.  I still won't be down till later tonight, but if the waters off I may go wade rebar and drift some san juan worms.  Not sure if you wade fish or fish at night though?

@JestersHK is coming late Friday, Saturday.  1 person.
@Chief Grey Bear is coming Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  5-7 people.  Not sure how many fishing.
@Bryan1717  is coming Friday, Saturday.  1 person.
@jtram is coming Friday, Saturday.  He and his wife, one fishing.
Unit #22 will be the gathering place.  It's got a big open room with a kitchen, located across from the office.
I'm going to be here after all.  I know Chief is bringing some food - I'll pitch in some smoked chicken and salmon (real salmon).
I assume we won't eat together Friday evening since everyone will be arriving at different times but we'll have lunch items there Saturday and then put on a big spread Saturday night.
Fishing... I'll be available to fish whenever plus we have boats ready to go.

    Mullinville, Greensburg, Kansas
Drove out last Wednesday with 2 nephews, Ryan and Levi with son in law Jimmy driving separately.  Marsha's family is from the Mullinville area, both parents grew up there so I've been hunting out there since joining the family in the early 80's.  Back then there were lots and lots of pheasant and decent quail numbers but both birds started to decline about 8-10 years ago.  So I haven't been back to hunt... giving the birds a break.  I guess other hunters have too, including locals, so I'm told.
We're hunting on private ground, mostly belonging to a good friend of the family's who lives in Mullinville and works in Greensburg.  His family farms, owns cattle and auctions on the side.
I took my black lab out, Jackson.  He's not trained but loves to retrieve.  And he minds pretty well.  He did good on dove and loves to "go".
I could go into a lot of detail but will keep it short.
    Bird report -
Quail:  Excellent!  Better than excellent... unbelievable.  First day we saw 14 coveys.  Good numbers of birds in the coveys too.  They were everywhere... grass draws, milo stubble, tree belts.  In one spot, close to milo, in the middle of a plum thicket, we s got a covey up with a huge number of birds.  Putting our numbers together (because they went all different directions) our guess there were 60-80 birds.  I've never seen anything like that...  from my spot, I just stood and watched them blow out... never fired a shot.
Pheasants:  Good numbers but not everywhere.  They were in milo stubble and crp  but they had to be together.  Fair in draws with sunflowers - but the quail were there too.
Dog problems:  It is super dry and dusty out here.  No rain since early September.  Dogs had a real hard time smelling anything - dead or alive.  But they did point some birds and found some hard to find ones.
Losing birds:  I don't ever remember losing as many birds as we did.  We bagged 30 pheasants for the trip (7 hunters, 3 days) and about the same number of quail but knocked down I bet 17 roosters we didn't find.  Most weren't hit hard and ran.  Some are what we called ghost birds because they'd flat disappear on us.  Jimmy had one under his hands pinned to the ground- both of us on our knees in the grass and the bird somehow got away from us and was found 15 feet away.  Crazy.
