Been a very slow, lower than the normal low #'s birds seen this season atleast for me and everyone else I've talked to.  Ponds that normally produce havent this year and on good cold front / post cold front days that we'd expect to see birds around have been blanked.  Seeing a few birds here and there but no real #'s.  What few birds I have seen have been mallards and hooded megansers and a few GWT.  Surprised I havent seen a single gadwall this season and that's what I usually see the the majority of.  Thankful for the few birds I have harvested this season and just being able to go.

We had a mixed bag this year. Better than last year but...just when we thought it was gonna break loose and meet our expectations (Right after Christmas) it
shut down to an occasional merganser or nothing.  Best outing since then was these 3 and it took 3 of us to take them in 3 hours! What is there...only eleven
days left?....At least we're not froze out yet!
    Great pics guys!

The disappointing part of this season was just not seeing the numbers of birds we usual see. One day I only saw 4 birds the whole morning. Still managed to shoot some though

I have been lucky this season for as few ducks as I have killed.
I killed a canvasback drake this morning. It was on my short list of birds to get mounted..

Spent most of last night in the marsh to be able to get the spot we wanted. Tons of people, lots of shooting, a good number of birds, public land hunting.
i did have a good time with my son and a friend. We killed a couple of Pintail drakes and 7 teal. Also got checked by the GW on way out.
A decent started to the season for us.

Monday had a bird gobbling every time I called and getting closer just to have a guy hunting the neighboring property down the hill from about 150 plus yards shoot him.  Dont know if he was coming to me or him but frustrated with that and cows so called it morning and did some driving around.
Tuesday hunted public land and lucked into a good bird.  Get set up and as soon as I hit the slate bird gobbled directly behind me up on the ridge.  Never gobbled again but about 15 minutes after I heard him fly down he ran out of the woods passing by me at10 yds and went straight to the strutting and kicked its butt.  Didnt strut until after the whooping which in turn I let the Franchi bark and released the #5's.
     23lbs, 10.5 inch beard, and 1 1/8th inch spurs.
Smoked up the breast yesterday for dinner.  Bacon blanketed and smoked with applewood.

I managed to fill both tags with two really nice birds this year.  Opening day brought a 22lb bird with 10.5 inch beard and 1.25 inch spurs.  Bird #2 came Saturday, weighing 23 lbs with a 9.75 inch beard and 7/8 inch spurs (they were busted up pretty good).  I also learned a valuable lesson about using GPS tracking apps while hunting.  After bagging my bird on Saturday, I packed up my bird, blind, and decoy and hauled it all down through the valley and over the next ridge about a mile to the cabin. Only then did I realize I had left my shotgun leaning against the tree.  After making a deposit in the swear jar, I was able to re-trace my steps and find it with relative ease thanks to the GPS.  Good luck all!

Tagged out this morning with this guy. 22.5lbs, 1.25" spurs and a 11" beard. He's the tom I goofed up on Saturday morning. The bird roosted in the same area and went through the same clearing the previous two mornings so I got up 30 minutes early and slipped in pretty close to his bed room this morning. He wasn't as vocal today, but it didn't matter. After two gobbles on the roost, he pitched down just before 6am, stood around waiting for another nearby hen that would occasionally yelp. After she opened up, I let out two round of soft yelps, he answered and a few minutes later I heard him spitting and drumming just over the lip. I was ready for him this time and as soon as he came in to view and stuck his head out, I rolled him.

I had to throw his one in too just because I thought it was funny. The cat is named Pumpkin, but we like to call him Nosey Ned because he ALWAYS has to come inspect our critters that we harvest.

Walked about 3 miles Friday morning and could not find a turkey. Got home about 10 and decided to check the field behind the house. Low and behold there was 4 strutting with 3 hens. Didn’t think I stood a prayer, but snuck down the tree line and setup to see what would happen. One gobbler had stayed separated from the other 3 and he eventually decided to walk my way. Could not believe it happened the way it did. 24.5 lbs, 11 inch and 8 inch beards, 7/8th inch spurs. Both spurs would have been over an inch but both were broke off.
Saturday took my son and it was a dream hunt.  The only problem was he missed!  We will be after them again in the morning!
