Greasy B reacted to Al Agnew in Geez, it's hot!
Got back to MO over the weekend, and had my annual three day solo float planned for this week.  I kept looking at the long range forecast, and seeing little to no chance of rain during the week, so I figured it would be great weather--I hate doing overnight floats if there's a chance of thunderstorms.  But...I didn't really pay attention to the forecast temperatures.  Stepping off the plane in St. Louis, I was hit by a wave of humidity that was worse than a sauna.  So I paid a bit more attention to the forecast, and saw the temps in the 90s and 100s and the humidity.  Well, maybe...I've fished all my life in hot weather, and it never much bothered me, but I think I'm getting more sensitive to it as I age and as I spend more time in the negligible humidity of Montana.  And Mary, who doesn't do heat well, is always worried about me when I'm gone overnight in such heat.

I needed to do some stuff around the house yesterday, so I got up at 6:30 and walked outside, again being hit with the wave of humidity, temperatures already in the 80s.  I thought that it wouldn't be comfortable sleeping on a gravel bar in this kind of weather, and was coming to grips with the fact that I wasn't going to do my solo float this week.
This morning I worked a bit more in the yard, then decided, heck with it, I was going to do some exploring and checking out some spots to wade and fish; surely it wouldn't be too uncomfortable if I was standing in the water, would it?  Having made the move to our place on the Meramec, I was a good distance from all the wading creeks I had usually fished, so I needed to find some new spots.  I loaded a cooler of drinks, some topwater lures, and my creek fishing cast rod, and headed for the first creek I wanted to check out.  The first bridge I stopped at was fairly far down on the creek, looked slow and a little murky.  First cast at the low water bridge I got a strike from a nice green fish, either a largemouth or spotted bass.  Missed it.  I waded up the creek about a quarter mile, caught a couple little largemouth and a couple small spotted bass.  Never got wet up to my shorts legs.  It was hot.  As far as I could see, slow, shallow water.  Decided to check it out farther upstream.
I stopped at another bridge, with a lane leading off the highway down to the creek.  Looked it over...not much water flowing, a little clearer, could be fishy...but still wide open to the sun.  I wasn't too impressed, decided to check out a couple other spots a little farther upstream.  Neither looked all that great, mainly because there was really no good place to park at the low water bridges.  So I gave up on that creek and headed for the far upper reaches of the Bourbeuse.
I had checked out several road crossings on the Bourbeuse a few years ago when researching for the book I was writing on the Meramec river system.  The book has never gotten quite finished, and I didn't know if those accesses were still viable.  The first one I stopped at was good looking, except that even as high up on the Bourbeuse as it was, the water was very murky.  There was a big, deep-looking pool above the bridge, and what looked like short pools and big water willow beds everywhere downstream.  I started wading downstream, fishing that same topwater.  In the first pool, I got a strike from a really good fish, had it on for a bit, and lost before seeing it well enough to tell what it was.  Next cast I caught a small largemouth.  Next pool, I caught four straight smallmouth from the same 10 foot section of bank.  Third pool was too shallow.  Fourth pool, three more smallmouth.  None were over 14 inches, but plenty of fun.  Long section of shallow water.  Very tough wading on chunk rock.  Finally reached another decent looking pool, caught one small smallmouth at the head of it, nothing through the rest of it.  I suddenly realized that I was REALLY hot.  I'd been wading up to my waist in places, but the water was warm, had to be in the 80s.  The sun was beating down.  The humidity was stifling.  I was beginning to worry that I might be getting a little bit of heat exhaustion.  I stripped off and got into the water, submerging head and all, lolled around for a bit.  I felt a lot better, but the thought of wading farther and then having to trudge back up to the truck just didn't sound appealing.  So I headed back.  Got to the truck, dug a cold beverage out of the cooler, and started the drive back to the house.  Took a nap when I got home.  Dang, I must be getting old!

Kindness is missing for sure.  But if self-centered behavior is our new norm, where does kindness fit in?  It can't.  This is the emotional climate that we live in.

Kindness it is what is missing. The emotional climate might wise up, maybe not.

JFK.  True.  The entitlement mindset has become all too familiar, but I think that erosion started back in the 80s, and the dose of hard knocks is coming to them if it hasn't hit already.  Good luck on purchasing a $300K starter home that was $70K 20 years ago.
As it stands now, we have a fragmented population and deeply divided country.  A FULL 80% of people bumble around, clueless and self-involved not caring about whats going on, maybe by information overload, or just too lazy to try and understand.
The other 20% are split equally by 1) facist, cultish goons-  "God, Guns, and Tr--p" was I think the t-shirt of the doofus I saw today, and the other half by 2) pragmatic, educated normal folk who don't feel the need to demonstrate phony patriotism by flying a 20-foot american flag off the back of their ugly rusted out pick-up truck, 80 mph down a dirty interstate, ripping it to shreds, little regard or appreciation for respect of the flag.  These are your LOZ people, Wrench, are they not?  Ugly f'n white trash.
Pragmatic-educateds don't feel compelled to display their patriotism so overtly.  They live it.  They abide by laws, and facts, and truths.  Live decently.  Have an appreciation for the history of this country and how it was founded.  Send me your tired huddled masses, yearning to be free.  They may not go to church every Sunday, but they probably have better daily virtues and morals they abide by than the phonies who do, and who regard drownings on the Rio Grande as a success.
And they believe in peaceful transfers of power, as every president before has respected and abided by.
    We are in trouble.

Let me tell you.  Paul Dallas has some angry and weary knees, and mosquito bitten ankles.  But he sure is happy looking back on this trip
Day 1 - hike to Lake Haiyaha / Chaos Creek (10,240 ft elevation), 4.2 mile roundtrip
Day 2 - hike to Deer Mountain (10,013 ft elevation), 6 miles roundtrip - no creeks to fish, just suffering
Day 3 - hike to Mount Ida (12,874 ft. elevation), 9.4 miles roundtrip - no creeks to fish, just extreme suffering; 2,414 feet elevation gain, mostly above treeline; did not complete hike as steady winds around 40-50 mph finally blew us back down maybe a half mile from summit.
Day 4 - hike to Ouzel Falls, Copeland Falls, Calypso Cascades, Cony Creek (9,730 ft. elevation), 5.4 miles roundtrip
Day 5 - hike to Sky Pond, Loch Vale, Icy Brook (10,900 ft. elevation), 8.6 miles roundtrip; 1,800 feet elevation gain
Day 6 - mini golf and tourist stuff in Estes Park

Early morning start on our way up Mt. Ida.  Started at Milner Pass, well below treeline.  This trail follows the Continental Divide.  To my left is west coast drainage, and to my right is east coast drainage.

I went to the BS dam access this morning and had a good morning. Caught a dozen or so including this really nice rainbow. It took a plain red midge and put up quite a fight. It took about 20 minutes to get it in the net on the 6x tippet. Caught a few on a crackleback, but most on the midge.

Got out on the lower end of Norfork for the hopeful early bite and tried to find some of the top water action, but to no avail, at least for me. I did have a decent limit by 9 on a spoon and swimbait but noting to brag about just a decent day on the water.  I was in the beautiful Colorado rocky mountain weather all of last week and got spoiled to the low humidity and 40 degree mornings, boy was that out the window here.🥵 .
I did go shallow on a couple wind blown channel banks and tossed the plopper nothing, so went back out to deeper water.
Surface water temp 85 at 4:45 am by noon it was 88
Water clarity  was 8-10 feet probably, it had a good tinted color, I stayed deeper than 40' all day with the boat except the short run to the channel bank the wind had it choppy and colored so I could not get a feel for the clarity there. Have fun stay safe out there it gets hot quick

For quite awhile I thought it was just me becoming an old curmudgeon, but NO it isn't ME.    We've been hitting several area hotspots lately, either having dinner or stopping in for lunch or a drink.....and the parade of feral humans is obnoxious and sickening.       In the past 12-14 days out in the open IN PUBLIC I've seen 3-4 people projectile vomiting....then just standing there like that's normal behavior while others around them carry on, never missing a beat, and even walking through it.    A dude in a speedo had a bout of explosive diarrhea at a pool bar......and 15 minutes later everyone got right back in.
A seemingly sober gal reaches in her pants, pulls out a bloody pad and sticks it to the windshield of a Mustang in the parking lot.
Numerous people docking their boats or parking their cars,  dropping their kids off at the kiddie pool, then walk up to the bar and proceed to get absolutely hammered, then collect the kids, load them back into the boat/car....and away they go.
Me and my friends did a good bit of partying in our younger days.....but we always managed to reasonably keep our composure.   These people nowadays are a totally different breed, and they walk among us.   How do they manage to stay out of jail ?   If you mention to the bar/restaurant owners anything about it they just shrug and say... "Yeah this is the way it is".
It's truly SCARY !       After a week or so of mingling around I truly don't even want to leave the house until these people leave this area.   These aren't people from HERE, these are people from STL, KC, Omaha, ect.  I think.     I mean the ignorant hillbillies from around here will leave, or at least go OUTSIDE if they are gonna puke or poop.   Good grief!  😳

so I got my Lifer Pink Salmon. and followed that up with a Flyfer Pink Salmon. The Photos are crap. Wet hands/wet phone. Trying not to kill the fish
I moved closer to shore and got some larger Black Rockfish on fly made me glad I had a 9 weight. And then moved to a different point and caught this sea monster.thing was croaking at me and had zero good places to hold him. Strong fish. I think it’s a Cabezon. Lifer whatever it is. Tweaking clothing and headed back out.

So Today started for me at 0400. Showered through gear together and headed downstairs. Grabbed a cab and got to the South Terminal before they opened. Over correcting for yesterday.
chartered Jet Service to Masset. from Masset you take a Jet Helicopter to the Lodge. the helicopter ride is interesting. After a delicious lunch and Orientation/Safety Meeting, I set out.
here’s my boat for the week.I started out really struggling. I could see Pink and Silver Salmon feeding on the surface, but wind, boat control issues, and ignorance held me back.
I stayed the course. Switched fly line and flys. Decided to get a Black Rockfish to settle my nerves. the Z Man Swimbait gets eaten. I was missing a bunch though. Got whacked by this Dude. They are delicious, but I can only keep 3 and I want them to be at least 10 lbs.
I finally settled down and started mooching for Salmon. I missed several bites or lost the fish, but my first Salmon was an 8 1/2 lb Silver Salmon.  They have been running 6/7 lbs so I kept this one. I returned to the lodge and took meds for a headache. And back out again.
I picked a spot and started a mooching drift. I caught a nice Black Rockfish. Rerigged and got hammered.
I thought I had a halibut. The fish was very strong and stayed down. Finally I caught sight of it and saw it was a salmon. There is only one salmon that gets that large. KING! That fish fought so hard and so long. Very difficult to Net it by myself. I was I had @FishnDave to net him, but I persisted. 34 plus Inches to the fork. 19 inch girth. 20 lbs. I thought it might have been bigger, but I’ll take it.
well, You are only allowed to keep one King a day and I wasn’t going to take the chance of deep hooking a king so back to the fly rod.
it is a baby, but I got my Flyfer Black Rockfish.a lot more to say, but I’m too tired to do it. Tomorrow is another early start, but I’m on the board with a few species, a few keepers, and a Flyfer.

I went to Ackerman access this morning and fishing was good. Glad they finally posted some sort of schedule as to when they will be releasing water. I drove over there last Thursday only to find the water was coming up just as I got there. According to this post from AGFC it looks pretty safe to plan a trip 1 or 2 days after they release.
    https://ozarkflyfisherjournal.wordpress.com/2023/07/20/agfc-monitoring-norfork-water-temps/
The water is a bit higher than normal minimum flow... probably a couple inches, but no problem wading. Ended the morning with a couple dozen including this 23" rainbow. Cracklebacks, eggs and midges all worked.

Jeff Tweedy at the Sheldon.  Hard to describe how good it was, and I won't try.  He is our current Bob Dylan.
Little Feat last week.  Still rocking.  Fred Tackett hasn't lost a beat.  Tight, tight band.  And I'm not into jam bands, but they are the original, and they don't overdo it.
Joseph and Sawyer at Delmar Hall.  All girl groups,  Joseph is 3 sisters.  Amazing harmonies.
Jakes Leg at Venice Cafe, . . .authentic experience.  I haven't been there in 20 years, that place is so cool.  Rock steady Grateful Dead band going on now 40 years + and still grooves.  You Win Again was a highlight.
Elvis Costello and the Imposters w/ Nick Lowe the weekend before that in Indiana.

I went to the BS Dam C&R access this morning and had a good time. I hooked what turned out to be a nice tiger trout. It took me down to about half of my backing and a guide was pulled over on the side rigging rods for his client. I had to go around and over his boat when chasing the fish. He got out of the boat and offered to net the fish with his bigger net and then take a couple of pictures.
A little later I hooked another nice tiger on a crackleback. He was longer than the first one, but kinda skinny. Also got a decent rainbow along with about a dozen others. Glad to see the tigers doing well in the river. They fight like a brown on steroids with lots of jumps.

    Success! Whoop, Whoop!
Took me three years to the day to find my lid.  This fine hammered lodge stuff does not come up for sale very often and when it does it can be very expensive, but they are still out there.  Found the skillet and got it for under 30 bucks. I was elated. Got it restored and right away Pat laid claim to it with the remark this is mine. She uses it for everything best deep skillet Imo we have ever found. Then the search for the lid began. I was aware I might have to pay up and would of if it did not break the bank. I reached out here to you all, searched on the inter webs and made phone calls to places that deal with cast iron cookware. Those people just told me good luck and you may never find it. Well as we browsed an antique store / flea market / booth type place that we frequent not 30 miles from the house. Pat looked down on the floor and said hey isn't lid hammered?  I picked it up and got the chills. Quickly looked at the price tag, 14.95!  Got to the counter to Pay and the owner said you still have some credit here. (Sold him some skillets) Paid for it from that.    Some surface rust and top if the handle had from use the hammered pattern about polished off. I was pretty sure it was a match and arriving home it was spot on!  The treasure went right into the e tank then cleaned and restored.
Persistence paid off.  Circa from the 1940s.

I went to the BS dam access this morning had a good session. Minimum flow all morning and eggs worked early and then a few sulphurs started to come up. Very few fish were rising so I put on a sulphur crackleback and that was what they wanted. Caught around 20 with a couple nice ones and lost a really big one that hit and ran most of my backing out. He finally stopped and made some head shakes and then the hook pulled out. With the calm winds and low water it was amazing to see how many fish are up there.
Here's one of the better ones...

Went down with my grandpa and cousin John to fish an evening and day. Fished Sunday evening with jigs and caught quite a few fish from 5-7pm. Only running a half unit of water and they wanted 1/16-ounce and 1/32-ounce thrown at them. Lots of nice rainbows and I landed a 21-inch brown. Beautiful fish.

John and I fished for a couple hours yesterday morning with the water off. I threw a hopper and he threw a jig. I only caught one fish, but it was a great 21-inch rainbow. Absolutely crushed the hopper. Only bite I got all morning, but well worth it. John caught quite a few on 1/32-oz jigs.

We then went a got my grandpa and fished 3-7pm. It was warm but not too hot out there, and we caught quite a few browns on jerkbaits and jigs. We actually caught more browns than rainbows (22 browns to 7 rainbows). Nothing over 20-inches landed, but quite a few 17-19.5-inch fish. John and I both had one on that would have been great to land--nothing huge, but definitely in the 21-23-inch range. Took two trebles to the left index finger while unhooking a small brown. That hurt and caused a delay of 15 min or so. Pro tip: don't do that, it hurts. Home for a couple days then back down Friday..
