nomolites reacted to Dutch in Cape Fair 4-17 quick trip
It’s been a while since I’ve been able to take my wife out in the boat. We both had today empty so we went to Cape for a while. We didn’t get there till around 9 so the lot was nearly full. There was a boat on the first two places I wanted to fish so I went to number three. It was a good move. I had 7 bass with 6 keepers on that stretch. On the next 2 spots there were boats so we went on.
By 11:00 I had 14 with 8 keepers. In the next 3 hours I had 3 fish with one of them being a keeper. So I finished with 17 bass with 9 of them keepers. I also had 1 crappie. Everything was on a Ned with most coming on the mud bug TRD.

nomolites reacted to FishnDave in On killing trout (or any fish imo)
PSA/FYI:
MDC-run hatcheries produce (in addition to trout) paddlefish, hybrid striped bass, striped bass, muskellunge, largemouth bass, bluegills, hybrid sunfish, grass carp, walleye, pallid sturgeon, and catfish. Maybe other fish too, but these were listed on the various MDC warmwater hatchery websites.

I can't whole heartedly agree with this. If that many fish were killed the banks would b lined with dead fish from start to finish. I do agree people kill some fish but 15 percent is out of line with reality . 5 percent is a stretch. We stock most of the fish pursued in recreational ways anymore anyway so I don't think there is a real harm. We raise cattle and we are very kind to them from the moment of birth. We still eat them but no need to shock or beat an animal. People are too disconnected from where our food comes from . You've got politicians saying we don't need farms just go to grocery store 😂 this is real

We're still at 655 lake level, and the actual run can't happen in my area until the lake gets above 657.... But I found a tiny creek inflow that they could access without risking getting picked off by a bird of prey.
All males, and most are kinda small, but it felt good to get a few bites 👍 Got enough for dinner.

nomolites reacted to snagged in outlet 3 in Smokies Smallies
Stopped here on the way to SC. I’ve hit this roadside creek several times over the years. Never disappoints. I caught 5 in 2.5 hours. 2 real nice ones! Small stretch I can only access from shore. Maybe 200 yards of broken bottom 2-5’ deep water. Smoked (pun intended) @Mitch fs fugitive swim bait. It travels well! They were acrobatic and fought hard. Even caught a trout on a senko! On to SC.

nomolites reacted to McguirePat in 4/13-14 Rocky Branch and Indian Creek
Being a “weekender” and not often as I would like at that. I don’t get to contribute much but here’s what we did over a windy weekend.
Put in at daylight Lost Bridge and fished that area a couple hours before deciding to get to our dock Rocky Branch area before it got ugly that turned out to be a good decision. Then trying to avoid heavy wind we fished pockets and coves the rest of Saturday.
hard to fish a Ned in that wind so we went with a heavier tube. Nothing on Warts or Rock Crawlers. Ended up with 6 shorts and one barely 15” all spots.
Sunday we took back to Indian Creek before wind got heavy. Same baits for same reason 8 on the day with one 17” smallmouth and a couple other that were close to keeper length. 2-3 chunky spots as well. We really didn’t see any beds but it was hard in the wind most of the time.

Water temp 65-68. 9 Keeper crappie and I ran out of minnows. Went bass fishing after that and caught a Dino on a 3 inch keitech with 8lb on a spinning rig. Most crappie were in about 8 ft down. Even when I was out in 20 ft they were suspended. Tight to structure. There were so many gar around I think they were holding tight to the cover. I hooked 2 gar which I have never done before while crappie fishing.

Hit the water about 7am hoping to find a few fish before my son woke up and he joined me. Found 2 solid keepers on a 2.8 Keitch. Fish were on points about 10-15 feet of water. Bites were not plentiful, but quality was good. Picked him up at 9am and we headed out. We focused on Spawning pockets and round points. All of our fish today came on a swimbait or a jerkbait. Water was 57-59 degree and clear.

nomolites reacted to jdmidwest in Air Rooting Fruit Trees
The goal this year was to rebuild the garden at the farm and build up an orchard. The original orchard behind the house has long gone. The last apple tree died a few years ago. It had not been managed properly in my lifetime and never produced any fruit. The last pear tree is out there still kicking. It has a big cedar and a elm growing up around it also. But it is still viable and bloomed this year. It last produced fruit about 10 years ago.
I am trying the air root process to make clones out of the ones I have. Strip a section of the limb, apply growth hormone, put moss in a ziplock bag with a slit around the bare limb section, zip tie. In a month, it should root out, trim off and start new tree. I did a black apple tree I planted a few years ago with 4 others that failed. See how it works out. I have another tree at the other place that is one half yellow delicious and half granny smith. I plan on making some off of that one too to move out to farm.
I will be really nice to get that one pear cloned. Not even sure which generation planted that. Probably Great Grandpa Hamp.

nomolites reacted to jdmidwest in 2024 Bee Season
Lost one hive out of 4 this winter leaving me with 3. Good Friday I noticed one of the hives was bearding pretty bad in the warm weather, too many bees. I let it ride until I was actually home early on the Eclipse day. Did splits on both and resulted in 5 hives total again if they make a queen in each.
Came back to farm this after noon and noticed a cloud of bees across the drive. Swarm going on, old queen left drawing away a support staff of workers. Old hive will have queen cells in place to hatch in a few days and a new queen will take over that one.
Very big bunch of bees in a multifloral rose. I took a box down and did the shake. They all went in, off they went to the new location. The old apiary in the garden. 6 now.

Jeff met me this morning. We fished from 7-1. The water near muddy with maybe two feet visibility in the clearer places. The temp ranged from 56-59°. We caught 27 bass most of which were lmb with maybe 5 spots. They were quality fish with many keepers. Ned was the best bait with mud minnow leading the way.

WT was 58 and it was overcast. Fished for 3 hours and caught 10 fish and missed quite a few. Tackle max fugitive and Ned did the damage. No love on the crank or jig. The big smallie was so close to 20”.

nomolites reacted to AR Huzgr in Lower end 4/8 eclipse smallmouth
Went out with my wife, just for a few hours to watch eclipse from the boat.
On water about 12:30 and off about 3.
Didn't travel too far from ramp, maybe a mile or so. Eclipse was nice. I saw totality in 2017. That is much better but lake wind did calm I thought and temp dropped maybe 10 deg or so during.
As for fish, I didn't think the eclipse changed any behavior but in the 2.5 hours or so caught 12 smallmouth, all less than 15 in until the end. Told my wife 5 more casts and got another big smallmouth in about 17 ft water.
20 in, 3.7 lb.
Wt was 55-56 towards back of windy coves.

I saw that also. Then I tried to send a message and congratulate him but he can't receive messages so when he reads this, congrats because Friday and Saturday we struggled to find good fish! However on Sunday we absolutely smashed them. I caught a 5.33 that was good for a second place and got beat out in the last one second by the eventual winner. It was the only black we caught all day long. But we probably had 25 keeper Smallmouth that made it absolutely crazy. Our best five was about 19.75. That was with four Smallmouth and the one black. I'd say we had 10 to 15 Smallmouth over 3 and 1/2 lb. One of the best days we've ever had honestly for just fishing.

Fished this morning and the boaters this weekend left a few still willing to bite.
Fished in 20ft around timber and shad. Using swimbait and Damiki.

nomolites reacted to Ryan Miloshewski in Truman Report and My PB Crappie
Been fishing Truman the last few weekends. It's honestly been pretty brutal with the wind. We have been catching them, though. The cold fronts have them moving constantly it seems. Most of the keeper fish are in the mouths of creeks in 15-20 FOW, about 10 ft down. As soon as you get into the creek arms, it is dink city. Color doesn't seem to matter much, but monkey milk, orange/chartreuse, and bone have been good. We have been using 1/4-oz and 3/16-oz jig heads to get down quickly with the wind. Some fish crush the jig if you get it anywhere near them, others you have to knock them on the head and slowly pull it away. Hopefully we get some rain and warmer weather to move the keepers back up into the creeks. Water temp was 54 yesterday, with shallower areas showing 57.
Got this one yesterday--biggest crappie ever landed at 15-inches and 2.2-lbs. Let her go so she could spawn. That was fun!

nomolites reacted to Dock-in-it in Kim City - April 6 - Perhaps a 1K fish for the Big Bass tourney
I fished this morning and the bite was really good. On my first cast I was fortunate to catch a LM in the 6 to 7# range on a swimbait. I kept the boat in 40 to 55 FOW all morning. The LM seemed to used the top of the water column down to 20ft and I caught them casting. I caught plenty of SM and K's fishing a 3/8 Damiki vertical amongst shad and they liked the 30 to 40ft range.
There were lots of white bass in the shad and I caught a few approaching the 2# range.
The lake was an absolute zoo yesterday and I thought today would be really busy but it was manageable to my surprise.
The wind was blowing and made boat control a steady job.
The picture of the big LM did not turn out too good because I have tennis elbow and not able to hold up heavy objects with my arm extended.

nomolites reacted to Big Bass Tour in Livescope out of hand
It's not about fish catch data and let me do a better job of explaining the FFS impact or lack thereof. We pay 210 paid places over a three day weekend and have 7 hourly weigh ins each day and approx 80-85% of the checks cut are "uniques" meaning the angler cashed one check for the entire weekend. 10-15% are 2 checks and less than 5% are 3 checks or more. That data is both historical data and real time from this year and this weekend and it doesn't change much event by event.
This is due to a number of factors related to our format.
1. We limit the number of fish in the livewell
2. You leave your spot multiple times a day to run to a weigh in and it either gets backfilled by another boat or you end up somewhere else after you weigh your fish.
3. Regardless of "how" you caught your fish, the single biggest factor that affects cashing a check or placing in a one fish format, is the strategy around what hour it's weighed in and how many other anglers are weighing in that hour and their subsequent decisions. Example: A 5 pound fish in one hour can win it and in another hour could be 4th etc
There's other factors impacting this as well but you get the point. FFS may help someone locate fish quicker and potentially help them find a bigger fish but its overall impact is muted considerably by how you play the one fish game.
Certainly over time the number of anglers using FFS will increase across all tournament formats but you won't be able to get around navigating the hourly format and the most important factor influencing you getting paid and that's strategy and understanding the format and how the day is playing out and paying attention to the real time leaderboard, not starring at your FFS... Hope that helps.
