  1. Do I remember that you have a custom casting rod made for the Ned?

St. Croix uses a very decent set of blanks. My top water rod is built on a St. Croix blank. I have built other rods using one of their handle kits.Like all mass produced rods (even Loomis) the guides are sometimes too large, heavy, or infrequent. Nonetheless, you can use them and ignore an occasional line rub unless you are nit picky like I have become.

Wow, I've never thrown, much had, an upgraded reel like that. Was it originally a JDM?

Do not know the reel. Shimano makes great stuff, but I got burned on the E series Curados and have never gone back. My nominee for a finesse reel other than the expensive Revo MGX would be the Lews Custom Pro Speed Spool SLP. However, I am sure what you have will work. A small tip: Conventional wisdom says to set the spool tension so the bait drops slowly but stops when the bait hits the deck. If you have a light action rod that loads when you throw the Ned, set the tension a tiny bit tighter to prevent over runs.

If you build your own rod, when you use a split grip, epoxy a 1/8 ounce split shot inside the end of the blank. That takes care of the balance. Balance is way more important than total weight. That fact is why I spiral wrap micro guides as well.

  5. Thought that I would let you know the crappie are on the banks at Viola. My friend Steve caught 50+ from my boat, I caught 3. One of his was 15" and 2 lbs We took 10 home.

My response is virtually identical. I have heard rumors of deep flat fish.

  8. New format interesting. However its only shortcut is "unread" content and of course that list is six miles long. Can you tell me how to set preferences for "new" content to those receiving posts since my last visit?
