crazy4fishin reacted to Quillback in Smoke on the water...
Dutch and I fished down stream from Big M today, and it must have been Table Rock burn day or something, people burning wood all over the place. Back at the launch when we finished my truck windshield had fine ash on it and driving out the air was thick with smoke. Weird atmospherics kept the smoke from disbursing, it stayed low and would not go away.
The fishing was good, we boated 26 bass, all but three were spots, and 8 were keepers. All the keepers were spots, and Dutch weighed one for 2 and a quarter for out biggest fish.
The spots are fat and mad, lots of fun on spinning tackle. Most of our fish were on the Ned rig, Dirt being my color of the day.
Best bank had us sitting in 30 FOW but close enough to the bank to almost hit it. Rocks and trees were a plus. We were letting the Little Guy fall to the bottom and then work it back slowly.
Saw several eagles, and a loon. Saw several large groups of gulls flying by, but no idea where they were going as we never saw them stop for feed on shad.
WT 46 when we launched.

Well, if it goes like it did today next Saturday someone in that BFL is going to weigh in a Huge Sack of Fish.
Perfect morning with a bit of cloud cover and a gentle breeze.
Surface temps at 0700 were 46.7 main channel. Quit at noon when it really started to white cap and the temps were 50.7 degree.
Had over 25 LM most in the 17 to 18 inch bracket with one good one. Never caught a single K.
A-rig-stickbait-jig and a new Berkeley Bait.
Depth was a constant 25’ not 30’ or 20’. Saw every fish I caught with the exception of 2 jig fish. They were on the bottom 25’
Lots of what I caught were A-rig fish sitting in tree tops at 25’ worked the rig right thru them in the Danger Zone strikes were Hammers
Depending on weather you might see a 23-25 pound bag next Saturday
Good Luck

crazy4fishin reacted to Quillback in MDC says there are plenty of bass in the lake.
Here's their forecast for this year.
Fishing for black bass should be excellent in 2024. Largemouth bass are plentiful throughout the lake as a result of the high lake levels over the past several years. An abundant year class of largemouth bass was produced in 2020 and these fish should reach the minimum length limit of 15” by spring 2024. Quality largemouth bass are present in the lake as well. The percentage of largemouth bass greater than or equal to 15” was 28% throughout the reservoir during the spring 2023 electrofishing surveys. These surveys also revealed an abundance of spotted/Kentucky bass in the 11”-14” range, with nine percent of the spotted bass captured in the spring surveys exceeding the minimum length limit of 15”. Smallmouth bass fishing should be good again in 2024 with good numbers of keeper size fish available. Largemouth and spotted bass comprise the majority of the black bass population in the river arms, while smallmouth bass comprise a substantial segment of the black bass population in the main lake from the Highway 86 bridge to Campbell Point. Anglers need to fish a variety of water depths and types to find bass. Outside of the spring spawning period and in the fall, bass are often found in deeper, offshore water. Extended main lake points, humps, and bluffs are productive areas. Jigs, spoons, and drop-shot rigs are effective during summer months in the 10-25 foot range or deeper, depending upon the depth of the thermocline. Largemouth and smallmouth bass can typically be caught fishing on the bottom while spotted bass are commonly found suspended over deep water following schools of baitfish. Good electronics can greatly increase your chances of finding suspended schools of spotted bass.

Well today was a complete letdown from yesterday. I caught 4 small bass and that was it. Where they were yesterday, they were not today. Had to go out deep, 30-40 feet to get a few bites on the Keitech.
Had a couple of A-10's buzz me as I was taking out. Looked to be maybe 200 feet off the ground, they flew right over the Big M ramp, went down the lake, and then banked and flew up Viney.
WT 44 when I left.

I think almost all the guides report theirs as it’s a real thrill for the clients and they get a great keep sake memento. I think there are some regulars that don’t report anymore. I know in my boat alone we had 4 that would have gotten certificates last year that we didn’t report and a couple of those were over 23. I used to frame and hang all my certificates next to a framed picture of this fish. Makes an awesome display. Now days if you don’t catch at least one over 20 in a couple days of fishing we’ve done something wrong so we snap pics and release. Taney has spoiled all of us the past few years no doubt! So I do think there are quite a few that don’t get reported as well. I think it’s a fantastic deal that Lilleys does this and I love it and I truly think it’s helped the fishing! I appreciate everything Phil and the gang does for this lake we all love.

Marsha and I helped with distribution yesterday at the food pantry. I took this picture to show how much food we give out. I know you can see details but there’s 5 packages of meat, produce, frozen blue berries, cereal, bread, pasta and can goods. This is for a family of 3.
A family can also receive food at one of our 60 mobile distributions throughout the month. So they can get 2 carts off food per month.

What sad news, Buster was one of the first guides that I used when I started fishing Taney and TR. That was 25+ years ago.
We developed a friendship that extended to our families sharing meals and many a fishing trip - like all of us there were life issues but he was always smiling and that man could fish like no other.
Bill is right, he went home to soon for those if us still on the spinning ball! Prayers for his family during this time

About noon the kiddo asked me to go fishing and I couldn’t say no. We only had about 2.5 to 3 hours once we got there. Fished around monkey island and around the landing. 5 rainbows, a brown and a bass. Ollie got a new fly rod for Christmas a d was dying to try it. And sure enough he actually caught one. I was surprised as we weren’t really prepped with all the appropriate stuff for fly fishing. We forgot my fly bag.
He got that gripper for Christmas mainly for catfish at the pond. I’m not a big fan of them for trout but it did make it easy for him to hold them and get a pic. The brown never left the water

crazy4fishin reacted to Phil Lilley in Lilley's Lake Taneycomo fishing report, December 2
by Blake Wilson
The month of November is at its end. It has brought us cooler weather, and with that, more generation. On Lake Taneycomo these last few weeks, typically 50 to 75% of most days saw some type of flow. Generally only a few hours in the daylight experienced the water off. There were even a few days last week with some very slow flow, as little as five megawatts at 1,200 cubic feet per second. It was quite interesting. Phil's theory is that something broke, and the U.S.Corps of Army Engineers was not able to shut a turbine completely down. This happened a couple of years ago. But everything is back to normal.
Fishing has been above par for me in terms of numbers of trout, and I've heard the same from other anglers. With flowing water it is easier to get a bite and catch more fish. Nathan Bolerjack, marketing manager here at Lilleys, reported 22 trophies were caught and released in November, about average compared to past years for the month.
On the live bait side of the spectrum, the night crawler reigns supreme. There are periods of the year our trout lose their appetite for worms for whatever reason, but for the most part, they are the go-to bait for big and little trout. Use four-pound line, #8 short shank bait holder hook and a small split shot to get the worm down to the bottom. Inject the worm with a little air using a hypodermic needle to float it off the bottom or use a floating jig head. If the water is running, use a half crawler, same rig or drift rig, and drift it on the bottom.
On the artificial side of the spectrum, a variety of things have been working. During generation, especially with two or more units, drifting a scud and egg on a drift rig has been great through the trophy area clear down to Short Creek. The egg fly seems to be more productive early in the morning than the scud does better later in the day. I have been primarily using a size 14 in gray, tan, olive or crystal gray colors. The egg of choice has been the eggstacy orange, or a 6mm orange bead pegged on the line 2-3 inches above a scud fly.
When the water is moving slower, one unit or less, or when it's off completely, a number of lures and flies used under a float are working. Below the trophy area, the pink worm under a float is good before the sun gets up over the water. Use four-pound line and fish it four- to seven-feet deep. Black or tan micro jigs, as well as the megaworm, under a float are producing trout. You might consider going to two-pound line if you're not getting bit, especially on very still and sunny days.
Captain Brett Rader has been very successful with his softshell scuds, his coral megaworm variation and a white micro jig.
Here at Lilleys' Landing, we are currently in production of a new sculpin jig style streamer. It's a football style jig tied as a sculpin using rabbit fur strips. The football jig construction allows the jig to be retrieved hook up so it can be hopped or drug on the bottom without getting snagged on the rocks. In bass fishing, this jig is used to imitate crawfish. It's tied using the same colors we offer now in our fly section, namely the Leonard Keeney sculpin. The main difference is the football- shaped head is poured lead like a jig. It weighs much more than the Keeney sculpin and can be thrown using spin cast equipment.
If you watch One Cast, you've seen us using this jig quite a bit lately, experimenting with the best ways to use it. Darin Schildknecht, our fly shop manager, told me that his first time fishing the jig was the most fun he's had fishing for six years! So far the jig has worked best in fairly shallow water where trout are actively feeding, worked about the same as you would fly fishing and stripping a sculpin fly. This is gravel flats in no more than three to four feet of water. Work it using quick, darting and fast movements, stopping and letting it lie on the bottom a few seconds.
The Branson Landing area is holding quite a few trout including a lot of brown trout. The Missouri Department of Conservation stocked about 4,000 browns in early November below the Landing, and they've seemed to have found a home in that area. These aren't the normal stocker size of 9 to 11 inches. These actually are a year older and average 14 to 18 inches in length. They're chasing lures like spoons, spinners and jerk baits, as well as the other baits like worms and Powerbait.
If you fish this area, stick to the deep side away from the Landing and fish Power Eggs, worms and the pink worm under a float. Trolling lures should also work well down there.

We were very blessed to acquire this property a couple of years ago and have been praying about what to do with it. 80% is wooded with lots of cedars and oaks. Not many mature trees and a lot of the hardwoods are kinda sickly, we found out. But it's still a nice, quiet wooded area that we think will be a good place to build a few single cabins for nightly rental.
The creek, Cooper Creek, is what we call a dry creek which basically runs only when it rains except it is fed by a couple of springs that come in on the golf course above us, Thousand Hills Golf Club. So there is a nice flow through the creek year round.
The property between us and the lake (33 acres) belongs to Liberty Electric and leased to MDC which is pretty cool. We're hoping to work with MDC to construct hiking trails. We'll see. But it's a great buffer.
The trick will be getting utilities to the area - water from the existing well we'll have to go through alot of rock ledge area unless we drill another well which might be cheaper. Sewer - we're looking at possibilities but septic is definitely a good option. There's good soil and we have room for fields. With only 2 people per cabin, the usage will be minimal.

crazy4fishin reacted to Bill Babler in RIP Buster Loving
Nother Buster story. Several years ago and by this time Buster wasn’t painting anymore he was having Tim Hughes paint all his baits. Buster was just strictly using Megabass plus 1’s
He called and said come over. The walleye are slow but I’m catching some really big LM and some nice crappie while I’m bass fishing.
He said just bring your JB rod, that’s all we’re going to do. I hummed and hawded but said OK OK I’m coming over.
We launched at the park at swan and fished the little points and cuts down to the Barker Hole on the left side going down.
Buster caught a white and 3 pretty nice crappie. I missed a tick right in front of the Eagle nest and that was it till we got to the Barker Hole.
Right after the little pocket just before the BH, I got hammered. It stayed down and we both thought it was a big Walter. Buster was back there with the net with Andy’s Red dripping from his lips when a really really nice LM Wallowded to the surface. 6.5 pounds on his beat up scale. about 5 cast later I was hooked up again with Buster hovering over me net in hand and crisco dripping off the net handle. Another 6 pounder of the green variety. Buster said, “I told you I been catchin biggins.”
My next 4 fish out of the back of Buster's boat were all over 4 pounds. I mean I had a total MONSTER sack and Buster had a dinky white and 3 crappie. I think I was pushing 25 pounds using a custom painted Tim Hughes Megabass plus1
He got super quiet and man you could tell he was more than bearing down. About that time I caught another bass around 3 pounds and by then he is not even attempting to pick up the net. He was just groaning in the front seat. He threw down the JB rod and picked up a swimming minnow. I was feeling pretty good about myself by this time so I said, thought we were just jerk baitin.” This is all within 100 yards stretch on the Barker Hole.
He said let’s cross over and fish the other side going up and I had no problem. That little bluff stretch just up and across from the BH is where he started. My first cast I caught another 3 pounder. He turned around and said. “What the Frig. I guess you got to win some of the time.” If I remember correctly it might not have been frig.
I came back with your the one who invited me. Ya, he said “and it might be the last time.”
Good Luck.

I'm wondering if he installed FFS on his boat and is using it to look under docks to see which ones hold fish. He might even have one of those Damiki rig deals tied on. Maybe even a Hover Rig. Probably does not have a bait caster in the boat. He's changed. 😃

Whoa there Mr. Kingfish, I distinctly remember a few weeks back you giving me flak about fishing "dragging baits". I did think (mistakenly) that you were a traditional bass fisherman that would never set down the moving baits, and you would literally die on the front deck before tossing a FINESSE WORM!
I am sadly disappointed. 🥶

crazy4fishin reacted to Champ188 in Quick Spin Baxter. 12-14-23
Caught a similar bunch of fish but much shallower Tuesday. Sun was high and bright with no wind so I started out flipping docks and pretty much stuck with it the entire 6-7 hours I was there. Mostly spots but 80% or better keepers and a couple a little north of 3 pounds. Most of mine were sorta long and lean, like some of Bill's fish above, but the two bigger ones looked like lower-lake fish ... just total footballs.
Have to share this ... our late buddy Bo came to mind because, along with the smallmouth he caught when he ventured downlake on his night trips, he'd bring big spots back up the Kings and White rivers, too, as part of his "tournament restoration program." He figured --- and I agreed (yes, Bo and I sometimes agreed 😆🤣) --- that with all of the big derbies being out of Kim City and points even farther east, a lot of fish were getting hauled out of the river arms and never replaced. Bill knows this better than I, but no telling how many fish Bo brought back to the rivers over the years. It was a bunch and it wouldn't surprise me if it made a noticeable difference. Now just imagine how much MORE difference it could make if the MDC would just do an annual ... or semiannual ... supplemental stocking of SM and LM. I don't think spots really need any help with numbers, especially with a 15-inch min length limit.
My fish Wednesday came from 4-28 feet (almost ran outta line on that deep one 😂) on two things ... finesse worm (watermelon candy) on a drop shot and a 5/16 ballhead jig (jelly smoke) with green pumpkin craw trailer.
Yeah, I rambled. It's legal in the winter.

Got to the H. Hwy. ramp at 0700 and was not the first kid on the block.
There was a slight chop on the water so I threw a RK Crawler for about 30 minutes. Moss was so bad I gave it up and went to the briny deep.
Fish anywhere from 45’ to 65’ some on the bottom some suspended. I had to have a Wolf Pack to get bit. One’s and two’s didn’t want either the spoon or the Dimiki rig.
Caught 15 with all being solid keeps. No monsters but really hard pullers. It was fun.
Water temps stayed around 52/53. Fished till about 10:30.
Good Luck out there.

crazy4fishin reacted to Champ188 in I DON’T WANNA FISH LIKE THAT.
If you're past 40 and even that's probably too high, you are gonna struggle to compete these days. These kids are far better at running computers than they are at fishing. They aren't old enough to have much appreciable time on the water but they can dang sure turn on that computer, dial it in and let it do the hard work for them.
No sour grapes for me ... don't want to fish that way, ain't gonna fish that way and had my fill of watching SOME of these local wannabe kids run all over each other and everyone else on the lake. There are literally some out there who believe their mission to win money outranks the importance of whatever I might be doing if I'm someplace they want to be. We've all heard the old, "Yeah, but I'm fishing a tournament!" when we tell one of them they are intruding. And if we say anything to them that isn't sugar coated with rainbow sprinkles, we are being non-woke selfish meanies.
