Anybody Been Doing Any Good On The Big Piney?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, new to the forum and fishing the Big Piney. My son and I will be coming down this Thursday with a couple other father/son combos to do some bass fishing and floating. We are supposed to put in at Boiling Springs and do a 15 mile float. How has the fishing been? How is the water depth and current? Any recommendations on lure choice and line diameters? I had planned on starting out with crawdad crankbaits and plastic baits (chompers) and some small spin baits like beetle spins. Any good bait color recommendations for this area? My son is just learning how to fish (6 1/2 years old) so any good easy to use lure suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

rebel teeny wee brown crayfish crankbait with 6lb vanish fluorocarbon and a rapala knot. beetle spin would be good to, probably in something orange. you might want to bring some wax worms and fish some rock piles and root wads for some google eyes with your son. I was down there fishing about 2 weeks ago and we cleaned house on smallmouth, google eye, longear sunfish and caught a couple of spotted bass too. you can check water levels at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/mo/nwis/current/?type=flow

Thanks for the reply Stoneroller. I finished spooling up 8lb trilene last night on our reels. I tied on a orange beetle spin 1/8oz for my son to start out with, I have a small brown rebel crawdad crankbait and a 4" chompers jig rigged up on my rods. Really looking forward to getting out there with my boy, this will be his first fishing float. Man this day is dragging at work though.

We floated above Boiling Springs last weekend. Tie that boy on a white roostertail or teeny craw and he will have a blast. Had a buddy try a beetle spin and he didn't do very good on it. The smaller plastics picked up some fish as well.

Can't go wrong with a bobber and a tub of worms. Either way he is going to have a blast.
