St Louis County Pond Fishing

Almost all of the biggest bass and crappie I have ever caught have been from ponds in this area. I'm 16 years old and don't have a boat so ponds are the only things I fish on most weeks, but I have to say, if you spend enough time on it pond fishing can be just as good if not better than fishing anywhere else. Every pond is different though, I fish some where you only catch one or two fish a day but they both probably weigh more than three pounds. I also fish some where you can catch up to 20+ bass in a day and not get one over two pounds. Either way is fun and almost every pond has a big one. In the past year I have caught four 6+ pound bass and almost as many 1+ pound crappie from two ponds within five minutes of my house. I also fished one of my favorite ponds yesterday and caught at least 60 bass between me and three of my friends. I hope this proves that you don't need a bass boat and a huge lake to catch good fish or good numbers of fish. Also if you guys have any good pond stories I want to hear them! thanks

Four 6+ lb bass huh? Pics or it didn't happen...

Just kidding. Nice work.

My favorite place to fish in the city/county is at Forest Park's Jefferson Lake. I like to think I know the pond pretty well because I fish it nearly every day during my lunch break at work. I don't always expect to catch many fish, but they are usually of decent quality. I can usually catch one or two on my lunch break. Some days it can be on fire.

My favorite day was one time last summer when it was scorching out. It was probably July and high noon (my lunch break), hot, humid, and no wind whatsoever. It was not your ideal day for topwater. Regardless, I had a super spook junior tied on and I must have found a school bass about 10 feet out from the shore. It was like they were having a competition to see who could hit the spook the hardest. One bass came up to hit it and knocked it like 5 feet in the air. Didn't catch any huge ones that day but caught several 2 lbers. It was a blast.

One morning I also caught a catfish there with a spook, that was pretty funny.

I use to live in a subdivision in St. Peters that had 2 local ponds in the subdivision. Use to get a little fly fishing in just about every day. The blue gills in one pond averaged 8 inches. The other had 20+ pound grass carp in it. Those were a lot of fun on the fly rod.

I found it to be a real pain in the rear to post pictures on here with the i-phone.

As far as pond fishing stories, I went to a pond that belongs to family of a friend I've fished with, and on the way there I thought they were seriously overstating how good this place was, or at least the part where anyone can catch fish there. I thought for sure I would buck that trend. I was even more certain of it when we got there and saw that it was fairly small. Then when both of them caught fish within minutes of getting there, I was certain I wouldn't, since I was still waiting and I was not a stranger to watching others catch them like crazy while I watched. But man, when I started catching them, it started going crazy. They were still catching fish, I was making my way to a new high personal fish count (just 6-7 but nonetheless, by far better than my average). Just an awesome day all over. No huge fish were caught, but they were stocky little Bass, and it was pretty awesome to get that kind of luck going from a place that small. I couldn't believe there were anywhere near that many Bass in there.

I used to fish 3 subdivision ponds, 1 a day in the Fenton area. I used to have nothing but 3 lb. and better bass in it and the others had more fish but all about 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. The one with the bigger fish had a mass fish kill and most if not all of the bass were dead along the bank when I went down there. Any one know of any ponds in the area worth visiting with good size fish?

Sounds like your lucky to me haha. I am 15 and I have fished many of the St. Louis county parks and have only caught one fish over 2 pounds the rest of my fish seem to be about 12 inches keep in mind I am a serious fisherman but I cant seem to locate the big ones. I would ask to trade some of the lakes where you have caught big fish but I don't have any worth sharing.
