Catfish Bait

Recommended Posts

Went to the Missouri at Herman yesterday and took some Junnies dip bait and some #2 treble hooks with sponge on it. Just a little while and the bait was gone every time. The bait is advertised that is has extra fiber in it so it would stay on the hook better but it don't. What does everyone do to keep bait on the hook. Was watch the G3 sportsman and the guide said the same thing. They were using some bait that he said would stay on the hook. Been using catfish charlies for years and it never stayed on either. Just don't know what to use to make it stay on.

Get one of those hooks with what looks like netting. Can't think of what they call them right now.

Now I will say when I first started seeing these, I thought, there is no way I am using these. Well I fish the Missouri myself with my uncle, who fishes it all the time for cats. He used these, so I did too. And man do they work!!! So I would look at investing into a pack of these.

When fishing big rivers like that bluegill, goldfish, skip jack on 7/0 hooks. When fishing smaller rivers we use sonnys.

I've gone to the fabric dept in WallyWorld before and purchased a material that looks like fine nylon mesh. Cheap way to make the hooks Chief is talking about. Had an old salt show me this trick. I was skeptical, but they do work.

Catfish Connection makes some good ones called Thangs, BPS has them.

I don't think a strong river is agood place for dip or punch baits. Any piece of fish will probably out fish them.

My girlfriends grandfather fishes the Missouri for catfish A LOT. He mixes his stink bait with dog hair and says it works great. He says the bait still comes off but he still catches them with the hair. Sounds funny to me but he swears by it

It might not be the right breed? Kidding aside hair is an old doughbait strengthener better tha cotton I would imagine.

Take an old pair of you wife's panty hose, put the bait inside a piece and hook in on like a pouch to your treble hooks.

I have done this with livers and it works pretty good. Never tried it with stink bait
