I can tell the difference when my wife uses cottage cheese instead of ricotta. I prefer the ricotta even with the greater expense.

 I tried ricotta cheese one time to see what all the hoopla was about.  It may have been the brand but it was grainy and nasty. 

 Cottage is king!

Bake a potato, split it and fill it with diced ham, cottage cheese, and diced fresh tomatoes.

I think ricotta is pretty bland, and yes, somewhat grainy. Put the two next to each other and I'll take cottage cheese. I've heard folks hoot about cottage cheese in lasagna like it's a real faux pas, but some of the best homemade lasagna I've had was made with it. Don't make lasagna enough to really have a strong opinion of it.

  Lasagna is where I tried the ricotta. 

 I went back to cottage cheese and have never attempted that crap again!

I've been to some really nice restaurants that use cottage cheese in their lasagna. They proudly display that on their menus. No idea how it tastes because I never order lasagna at a restaurant.

I use cottage cheese at home when I make it. But it's a staple around the house. The only time the container gets thrown out is when its empty. It's the best dip for Doritos ever made.

   I grew up on a cottage cheese mozz mixture in lasagna.  I make it that way today.
