Drug Busts On CA

Depends on the version of the story. Regardless, if the PFD had been put on properly he would still be alive. I will probably always be a supporter of Law Enforcement, but how that one didnt end up on a major settlement I will never understand.

His actions led to his arrest. The troopers actions led to his death. The simple failure to properly put on a life jacket on his prisoner made the difference between a wet prisoner with maybe a few bruises and a dead kid.

I see your point and don't entirely disagree, however once taken into custody and his movements restricted his safety was the responsibility of the trooper. If he had jumped before being handcuffed I would say well that was a bad choice on his part. Once cuffed the trooper was responsible for his safety unfortunately he failed to properly put the PFD on his prisoner. Granted there were extenuating curcumstances, wakes, inexperience, improper training maybe, but for lack of proper PFD wear he died.

Gonna have to find a new place to smoke my dope other than Pink Rock.

It is a nice little place, I used to go there years ago before the dopers and crack heads got run out of Johnson Shut Ins. You used to have to hike a way to get there years ago, now they have a nice gravel parking lot to encourage its overuse. There was one nice little spot in a rock that acted like a recliner, and the cool water would run over you just right. All it needed to be perfect was a cupholder drilled in it for my beer.

I spotted my one and only collared lizard on those rocks. I have packed a tent and camping gear in there on the bluff overlooking all of it and spent a few nights. It used to be a nice peaceful area.

Would he have died at the hands of the trooper if he hadn't been arrested?

There's alot about that whole deal that you apparently don't know. I'm not getting into it on here but a Google of Brandon Ellingson will bring up 3 days worth of reading and YT videos for ya, if you want.

Seriously sick deal.

Didn't the mouthy punk jump out of the boat?[/qu'. I can't imagine the mindset it takes to say something like that knowing the anguish the young man's parents must be going through. It must be really simple traversing life totally unencumbered by deep thought.

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance....Complacency, in any shape or form, can lead to tragedy. There has been alot said about lack of proper training, etc, etc. But here is the bottom line....If you are on the water, you should always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device. As an officer, it is your responsibility to make sure that anyone in your custody is properly outfitted with one, no excuses. That said though, enforcement action typically begins with someone making a conscious decision to violate the law....If someone stayed home and drank or smoked dope, they would probably never be caught; however, all too often, people engage in ILLEGAL activity in public, on the highway and on the water. Over 40% of all boating fatalities in the U.S. in 2014 involved drugs or alcohol. A person is killed every thirty minutes due to drunk driving.

It is an absolute disgrace that families have to witness fights, cursing, alcohol abuse, nudity, drugs and stupidity in public, in our truly beautiful lakes and streams. I am glad that we have dedicated men and women who have made it their career to "encourage" folks not to do those things in public. So you know, my law enforcement career was ended by a drunk on Memorial day weekend in 2000. I am now a criminal defense attorney...I think I am uniquely qualified on this subject....

32 years with a major metropolitan fire department. 20 as an officer, most of it working the inner city districts. I should write a book on the things we experienced. I certainly don't believe I am uniquely qualified on any subject other than compassion for my fellow travelers on this earth.
