I think that a lot of gradual formation is at risk with the rise of Catastrophism, a comet or asteroid and fragments there of, seems to have hit the north american Ice sheet some 12,900 years before present, killing off the megafauna.

Randall Carlson is a great read, lots of pod casts/Youtube videos that are very compelling
