Phil Lilley 4,675 Report post Posted August 10, 2017 OK, first time on the Taneycomo Forum. And I know I can google or youtube it but I thought this would be fun. What's the best way to catch a needlenose gar? Nylon rope? There's a BIG school of them at the Narrows - big ones, small ones and real big ones!! They got to be eating trout. So we have 2 reasons to try to catch them! 2 bkbying89 and JestersHK reacted to this
JestersHK 2,511 Report post Posted August 10, 2017 In the small creeks I fish I've caught a few on Crick Hoppers. The small trebles helped with a super hard hook set. Well as hard as my little ultralight buggy whip could muster... I was sight fishing them and intentionally trying to catch them. I caught about a 3 foot gar by accident down below the cable a few years back on one of your grey and white jigs too at night. Say we catch them what should we do with them? I know some guys will bank invasive species, but i don't necessarily like killing critters I won't eat... If they need to go though for the good of the trout population I get why it needs to be done. 1 Johnsfolly reacted to this

fishbait3 15 Report post Posted August 11, 2017 Bow fish them out, or they like crank baits resembling shad, they are great to eat as well or big hair jigs in similar pattern
fishinwrench 9,199 Report post Posted August 11, 2017 A #6 clouser is pretty effective at snagging that nose.

rainbow 16 Report post Posted August 12, 2017 We were fishing an oxbow of the Maries river on a buddy's farm in the Ozarks and started catching some good size gar. We never kept them but threw them on the bank for coon food. His wife who was fishing with us said what are you doing, that's the best eating fish in here. We put a bunch in the cooler and she fried them up and they were excellent table fare. So don't waste them they are good eating. 2 Johnsfolly and JestersHK reacted to this
