Ranger520vx Posted October 12, 2017 Share Posted October 12, 2017 We have the lower unit on my dad's 1996 40 hp force torn down and I was wondering what purpose does the big spring right above the pinion gear and bearing on the drive shaft serve. Ranger520vx Posted October 13, 2017 Author Share Posted October 13, 2017 I figured it was pretty low hours they bought it from a lady I know and she only had it a couple years and she bought it from an elderly gentleman that bought it new and just used it to drift fish on Taneycomo. Will talk to my folks think they only have liability but not sure. It's on a pontoon they bought this summer. Parts are pretty pricey, boats.net has about the best prices I have found. fishinwrench Posted October 13, 2017 Share Posted October 13, 2017 Search for a set of "GLM" gears, they will be the least expensive and they are perfectly fine for 2-3 cylinder applications. I believe that is just a standard 1:83-1 gear set. Do not reuse the old pinion nut, get a new one, clean the threads with alcohol, and apply red loc-tite. TRRANGER Posted October 13, 2017 Share Posted October 13, 2017 I recently had a lower unit failure, Mercury 175hp. I found a brand new complete lower unit as cheap as I could buy parts. It came with a 3 year warranty. They sell parts also might try them. I have nothing bad to say so far.
