River Jerkbaits

Recommended Posts

What size & color jerkbaits do all you die hard winter bass anglers like to throw? I've gotta few generic blanks to paint & wanted some input since table rock shad hasn't been a real killer on the rivers likethe lakes. Im assuming ghost minnow is good, but I wanted to hear what y'all liked.

Any other favorite winter hard baits are welcome. Im bored & have lots of things to paint.

I always start out with White and go from there. I use the full size Megabass 110 as my staple most of the time. Just use the KISS formula in my opinion.

For Smallmouths in particular I stick with two-hook lures, like the smaller McStick or X-Rap. I like subtle, natural colors on cloudy days and bright colors on sunny days, or stained water.

Basic minnow/shad colors work the best. Like Lucky Craft’s Pearl Shad color allot but it is impossible to find these days. Usually fish the LC Slender Pointer  (all sizes, but 112 is best) or Mega 110 & 110 JR.

I like basic colors and usually stick with some variation of silver with a black back.  A couple exceptions for me are pro blue in super clear water, or clown when the fish are acting aggressively.

I stick with the Megabass 110 or Jackall Squad Minnow 95 or 80... Play the water clarity when picking colors. Typically the water on our Ozark streams are clear as gin in the winter so natural/translucent shad/minnow patterns work best. If the water has some stain you can try brighter/more opaque colors. I'll usually keep changing colors til I find one they seem to like on that day.

I had a friend tell me that he likes clear baits with a black dot. He swears by it when the waters real clear, which is the case this year. I imagine it looks like really small shad to them, who knows. I so happen to have a clear blank that needs hooks & a sharpie dot.

I put a sharpie dot on almost all my minnow imatation cranks.

Usually pick a translucent bait in really clear water, but a clear one might snag more light. Might shine like a light bulb from the fishes point of view. Will have to try. Thanks!
