I train store managers from all over the country. I explain the same thing to them. The profit from sales is what pays for EVERYTHING. You would be surprised how many light bulbs come on when they hear that. Immediately changes their outlook on what they are doing.

Most companies have a "sales scoreboard" for their sales team.  We do too, but ours tracks profit.  I think I'm 10th in sales dollars but 5th in profit dollars out of 27 salesmen..

I knew nothing about business when I started into it on my own, and I still don't, but my dad's advise was to pay nothing for advertising (not a single dime), provide good service/product, treat people fairly, and don't charge any more than you'd be willing to pay yourself.  Stay the course and give it time to grow.

It seems that all these boat/motor/tackle/accessory companies are in too big of a hurry to "make really good things happen".

I'm so proud of Evinrude and Yamaha for not flooding the field with "reps and sponsorships" and annoying the piss out of everyone with BS advertising.

Did you not like Mercury's GO BOLDLY campaign last year.  I didnt really understand it. was it Go Boldly because you may not make it back to the ramp type deal

When you buy a new Mercury you are going boldly into their R&D team, and paying to be a part of it.

Well if Jordan Lee's Mercury didnt break down on him he wouldnt have made $300K in the classic two years ago. I noticed in 2018 he switched to a Yammi

I never heard Jordan Lee's story, but back when I ran a 200 Black Max I had a breakdown that forced us to fish all day in the take-off cove and we ended up winning 1st and BB.  😊

Hail the mighty lizard!  🦎

Sounds like a common tale from a local lemon merc that we hear about often around our parts.

I haven't read all the replies and I don't know if Champ188 has responded, but here's what we do.  Our three kids combined range from mid / late thirties to mid / late forties.  No spouses.  No kids.  They are spread from Alaska to Little Rock to east Texas.  They like eGift cards. 😊 James and I don't exchange gifts.  Same bank account.  Duh.  We do gift each other throughout the year with small fun or memorable items.  I broke one of my two Christmas coffee cups.  James knew that and he also knows I'm a little silly about donkeys.  He surprised me with a new cup with hilarious donkeys in Christmas hats.

I am nuts about Christmas. I love the lights, the food...all the sights, sounds and smells.  Don't get me started on Christmas music, specials and movies.  The old ones, but the good ones.  Yes, yes, yes. The warm hearts and acts of kindness and charity.  The Reason for the season. We decorate minimally.  Just a few pieces with special meaning. No tree (six cats..lol).

I repeat, I LOVE Christmas. I have zero stress and it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg.

Merry Christmas all my fishing friends.  May your week be merry and bright.

and that is exactly why those of us that do pay for them cost us so much.  we that were putting up actual cash had to pay for all the freebies.  but, i am happy for all those that got free boats.

bo

Bo, unless you bought a new boat you didn’t pay one dime towards marketing costs for any boat company. And the way you are constantly poor mouthing, I doubt you ever bought a new one.

Geez, Bill.  Sorry.  Just went back and read all the responses.  Didn't realize that your thoughtful question about Christmas turned into a whining poor-me session about boat buying and owning.  Thank your for the original question and your incredible patience in continuing to explain...and kindly, at that.
