Kim City - April 22 - underspin & jerkbait

Recommended Posts

I fished this morning and had some nice fish on a underspin with a 3" swimbait. Lately, I fish the first hour in a general spawning area with a underspin then move to the main lake and fish a jerkbait on steep banks with a few cedars and plenty of wind. Extreme wind produces better results for quality LM. I think the jerkbait bite might be over for me. This morning I had 8 shorts on the JB in the same spots that were producing some good LM. The WT jumped to 60-62. There are plenty of fish on beds but I have not seen any quality yet. The first big wave of stagging LM showed up on April 2nd, so after 3 weeks I would guess the spawning activity will be major this week. The water clarity is 12 to 15 ft and the water is not in many bushes. So you will see plenty of deep beds. There are 3 pictures of fish caught this morning on the underspin (6.1#, 4.3#, and another about 3#). The last picture is an example of the type of jerkbait banks that I look for.

Ill be down on Wednesday. I'm going to tie on a grub/swimbait, topwater, jerkbait, and something I can drag. That should cover all the bases I hope. I think your spot on with the water clarity, they might be a little deeper than you would think right now.

I am glad you had a good day and I know those smallmouth gave you a good fight. For new guys, it is a great year to learn where fish spawn inside a general spawning area because the beds are so numerous and visible. Also, the post spawn bite should be great with all the shad and clear water. I have caught a few post spawn fish, so there are fish in all three phases.

Caught 5 this morning in the rain. Grub and jerker, 1 keeper smallie. We were in aunts just put the trolling motor down and covered water. There is about a 4 lb female under the walkway in about 3 foot of water. She has been under there for the 2 days I've been here. Flipped a little 3 inch swamp bug at her but she just flared her gills at it and smiled at me as she swims away. An old girlfriend of mine used to do the same thing.😛 might head up to KC bridge shortly

The red-fin worked good this morning until 8AM, then you had to really work for a bite. I tried a Sammy and the fish were not too interested in a walking bait. They would fool with it but not commit very often. Do not be surprised if someone post a 100 fish day.
