Braided line suggestion in a spincaster

Recommended Posts

Wanted to see if you guys had any suggestions on some good braided line that casts out about as smooth and close to as far consistently as mono does out of a light action type spincaster. I tried out some fancy 6# braid thats equivalent to 1# mono diameter out of my zebco omega but considering how much I paid for it, I was dissappointed by how much casting distance I lost with it compared to the regular 4# line I use. Then this weekend went up to mark twain with some friends and there was a lot of short casts towards shore to be made and when making those, it would get in the habit of sticking and messing up the accuracy of my casts in comparison to a smooth release with mono. So yeah, suggestions on what type to try instead? Ideally something 6# strong. Thanks.

What is happening to you is to be expected with a lot of super lines. I would stick to the mono and just change a lot more. I 2 spinning reels set up with braid and two set up with Nano Fil. The Nano fill beats the braid easy for casting

I've been running this for a few years now in 8 or 10lb.

It is great until the coating wears off, then you gotta strip your reel and run it back on the other way to extend the life of it a bit.

Its tough line, but still casts great for being braid.  I do occasionally have issues with looping, but nothing worse than what I encounter with mono.  If you catch a loop early you can usually fish it out without it cinching too tight.  I am primarily using this for jerk baits only as well with some occasional pond work with larger bass baits.

Color me surprised that it works at all, I would have guessed it to be too limp to work on those reels. I'd also guess that the braid will wear the pickup pins pretty fast.

I have little to no experience with those reels. Braid does cast a little further than mono, but not a whole lot more.

Nanofil is king for casting distance, and it has more memory than braid, which may make it better for a spincaster. Knots are a pain in the butt though. It's a lot cheaper on ebay if you want to buy some to try it out.

Why are knots a pain? Is it worse than mono?

It's so slick and tough that most knots will slip, or it will cut through itself. Palomar or double palomar works well.

I stink at tying knots, so I use a mono leader, since a trilene knot is one that I can remember.

I don’t use a spincast reel but on my spinning reels I use Power Pro Super slick 8. I don’t know if I would use braid on any spincast reels though just based on the way they work with the pin that draws the line back into the reel. I’d stick with some sort of hybrid line like P-Line CX premium or Yozuri hybrid.
