I ended up last week getting notice that I'll be in Germany for work next week...  I fly out on Saturday and will be staying in Cologne for the week.  May have some free time on Sunday and the following Friday, but been struggling to find solid info on fishing over there.  Figured I'd try here on a long shot to see if anyone's made the trip over there, and if so did any fishing?

I have local resources on the ground over there too trying to help me get things setup so we'll see where it goes.  Fishing license looks interesting.  Apparently cath and release is prohibited in certain areas and you can be fined for animal cruelty if you dont keep your catch?

If I was there for a week on business fishing wouldn’t make the list. A week on vacation maybe. Culture, food, beer, wine and history would rank higher. Gotta see the cathedral there. But that’s me.

Would focus on the eats and the culture. Go out to dinner and get suggestions from the folks you meet and like while there. Rarely time to fish on an out of town work related trip. 10-12hr days are the norm. Gotta get as much done as possible when face to face.

Found this as part of a old article

Obtaining a German fishing license is time consuming and pricey. Its process entails taking a 30-hour course followed by a comprehensive fishing exam that tests what students learned. A good understanding of the German language is a must. The cost of obtaining the license is around $200. The license needs to be renewed annually for about $22.

You need the locals over there to get you hosted as a guest at a club, so the license isn't needed.  I think Bavaria is where the trouts live, wherever that is.

Yeah we will have a host for the week. I figured I'd likely have 1 day where I could possibly squeeze something in. We'll be doing dinners,  lunches,  and plenty of beer time too... the cathedral is def on my list as well.

The old European cathedrals are hard to comprehend until you set eyes on them. The engineering is really impressive, to say the least; tall, thin walls filled with stained-glass windows, the massive heights, etc. Cologne Cathedral somehow withstood the heavy allied bombing in WWII though much of the town was flattened or burned to the ground.

If you care, PBS has been running an episode of Nova that explores how they built the cathedrals. Just watched it the other day.  It's also online here: https://www.pbs.org/video/nova-building-the-great-cathedrals/

Yeah I am very excited to see the one in Cologne.  Will be weird to stand in an area where my grandfathers B-17 potentially dropped bombs on so many moons ago...

Thank you for the link Ness!  I will def give that a watch before I go, or if I can figure out how to download it watch it on the plane.  Even if I don't fish I'll throw some pics up in here of the cathedral for sure.

Would be cool to learn more about your grandfather's missions and see what you can find out.

I had an uncle killed in WWII in Italy. Have done some research and know the approximate location of where he was killed. Going to be in Italy in a few weeks and I'm giving strong consideration to driving to the area -- about 2 hours from where we're staying -- to check things out.

I made it over this morning after a bumpy flight... the Rhine is beautiful from the air.  We decided to sight see some today and made our way to the cathedral by Cologne which is actually in Koln.

Its beautiful and pictures won't do it justice.  We're also within a stone's throw from the river.

Beer and food are also fantastic. Kolsch beer is my favorite so far and the smoked pork knuckles are fantastic.  I'll try to take some pics of our chem plant tomorrow.  It was also very impressive from the air.
