So the mechanic I’m using has had my boat for six days now and can’t figure out what’s going on, thought I would check with this knowledgeable group of folks. The issue I’m having is that when I go to put the throttle down it will only go to about 2000 RPMs and just chugs along.   The mechanic is telling me I’ve got good fuel pressure but he is stumped as to why the boat just chugs along and will not get enough fuel to get it up on plane. I am open to suggestions so I can get back to fishing. Thanks in advance!!!

Im sure Fishinwrench will chime in soon. May need a little more info on what engine it is though.  You can have all the fuel in the world but without spark it wont do you any good.  I had a coil go out on an outboard a couple years ago and it would run low RPM's like that but wuldnt go because it was wasnt getting fire in one cylinder

Please provide the serial number of your motor. Might be able to help but need to know what we're talking about first....

Could be a number of things really.  I learned this when my 40hp Merc 2 stroke was having fuel delivery issues.  You really have to start at one end and work your way through the system.

Mine ended up being a deteriorated gas tank to engine fuel line from the ethanol gas the previous owner used.  It flaked off the inside lining on the line.  I replaced the line but still had issues.  I then replaced the fuel filter but still had issues.  So I then checked everything from the gas tank to rebuilding the carbs.  Still had issues.  It wasn't until I replaced the fuel filter for a second time that my issue was solved.  Turn out there were still some remaining flakes that passed through the fuel system and partially clogged the recently replaced fuel filter.

Could also be something not related to the fuel system.  Sounds like you need a better mechanic....

Steve, here is the serial number on that fuel injected engine, 150 horse Merc.

0G201272

I’ve been out in Colorado all week so I’ve not been able to get that information to you sooner. Appreciate any help you think you might be able to give me.

The research I've done on your serial number shows it to be a 175, not a 150. I agree with ellroy2, there are several things it could be and you probably ought to take it to a different mechanic. A good one will have a complete list of trouble shooting procedures to follow until he finds out what's going on.  If it was mine, I'd do a complete sync and link on it. Make sure the linkage is working correctly and in perfect adjustment. If it is, have somebody with the correct diagnostic tools check the TPS setting. The high speed windings on your stator could be burnt out too. It could also be the ECM, it controls everything related to fuel delivery.  Good luck. Hope you get it figured out...
