Losing electrical power when hitting big wave

Recommended Posts

three times recently I have hit a big wave and lost electrical power and motor dies.  2011 Ranger 522  I can restart from the keypad and turn graphs back on and all is fine... Something is loose

Where to check first?  there is a switch  that I throw on each trip... that disconnect electrical power.. I think that is the issue??  Maybe I shouldn't switch it on each trip??

Any help welcome..

You have 2 separate circuits loosing power?   The engine is completely separate from the boat accessory circuits.   But the engine doesn't require battery power to stay running, so if everything goes dead then you have more than one problem.

What motor (year/make/HP) ?

2011 ranger with Yamaha 250 sho. Checked and battery cables were barely hand tight.  Thanks for help. Sounds like more is going on.

I'm not 100% sure on the Yamaha 4S SHO, it may very well die if the computer control lacks backup power.

Wouldn't surprise me 🙄

The battery cables were barely hand tight on the Cranking battery. Haven’t had any new problems since tightening up.  Should have checked that first.

I guess I need to get up to speed on the SHO.   If that sucker requires constant battery power to stay running..... I'm gonna make bank on those suckers! 😊

I had a 2008 60hp merc 4 stroke and had a battery go bad on me on the lake, i could run 33mph and as the battery took its turn it started running slower and slower, im guess cuz the electronic fuel pump as running slower and slower.  I was about 10 miles from the ramp and when i got back i was only running at idle.  Put in a new battery and i was golden

That just ain't even right.   Defies the whole theory of operation.   🤔

it does. I have a sHO and if I diconnect the battery while it's  running it dies

I'll have to study on that.  Surely there's at least 30-40amps available, which should be capable of keeping things lit....while still supplying charge voltage.
