Line For Jigs

Recommended Posts

What line are you guys currently using. I have used 4# Maxima, trilene XL, 3.1#Tectan, and lately a couple of flourocarbons, mostly 4# Vanish. I think I like the vanish since I think it allows me to fish a size lighter jig like a 3/32 instead of a 1/8 due to it's sinking characteristics over the monos. I have had a few issues with bad knots, but could have been me. Usually like the palomar knot, but can be tough to get the doubled over section through the tie on those jigs, so I use the trilene when in a hurry to retie.

What are you guys currently using for line, and what do you like/dislike about it?

The tectan used to be my favorite, but last few spools I got were bad, so I have given up/lost confidence in it. Just curious what has been working for you guys. Would like for any of you Taney guys to chime in as well. Seems to be more Jig guys up your way.

I'm going to be using 4 and 6 pound Silver Thread and/or BPS Xcel. I think any decent line will do.

The problem I had with Tectan is a seemingly inability to withstand abrasion. Part of the problem is the extremely thin diameter of Tectan. Since there is so little diameter to begin with any tiny nick leaves you vunerable.

You could go up to an 8 pound Tectan and have the diameter of 4 lb anybody else and probably have a lot less "bad" spools, but then you're paying 3 times as much for a line of that same diameter.

You might want to try P-Line CX Premium. It is fluro coated, but still pretty supple. Alledgedly, fluro is very weak when heated so be sure to wet you knots before tightening it down.

I used Trilene XL most of the time, 4 lb. but have used Vanish and Transition quite a bit. Tried Tectan and kinda like it- I have some clients who will use nothing else. Will have to ask them about bad spools.

But Trilene is my #1 go to.

I like 4# vanish green flourcarbon. I also tie about a 3 foot piece of it at the end of my fly line to tie on a tippet. It saves me a spool of more expensive 6 or 7 leader after several trips and works well to tie onto after brfeak offs from tangles and the ones that got away.

Green Maxima mono in 2,3,4# is great for jigs. If you think the 4# is a little heavy try the 3#. I've tried P-line, Vanish & Maxima Fluoro (and liked them) but I keep coming back to the green Maxima mono.

What color have you gentlemen been using in Trilene xl and Bps excell. I have been using 2# and 4# vanish yellow. Like them both but are very expensive.

Doug

Right now I have on P-line CCX in 4lb. low vis green. Only have that on because I didn't have enough to order from Cabelas. I have used Tectan before and like you use to like it, but then I lost two HUGE bass on it. Switched over to P-line cx premium after the Tectan and I have been pleased with it so far. The CXX I have on now I'm not too sure about. I fished it the other day when it was REALLY cold outside and I had some problems with it. Laugh if you will, but I use to really like the 4lb. spiderwire in mono low vis green, but they quit making that. For jig fishing trout water I use nothing less than 4lb. and a low-vis color.

Where are you guys finding 3# Maxima. I think there is a time it could be handy. Maxima has pretty much been my favorite for a number of years, but then the flourocarbon is making a strong case the last few times i used it in light pound test. What knots are you guys mostly using?
