  1. Yo should come to Ollie fest at Capps creek next Sunday. The one after thanksgiving

  2. Had a chance to try out the photarium on Saturday. Should have thought to bring a towel to wipe the water off of the outside...maybe an aquarium brush for the micro bubbles on the inside too. Looks like this guy had been caught before. Some abstract macro photos with color heightened.
  3. Thanks again Alex. Had a good time. You were about the only person I saw who was catching any fish.
  4. IME, the best way to gauge depth of water for wading is by megawatt generation. 45mw is still pretty deep for wading (3.5-5 ft in most places) and limits you to the edges. 25mw or less is wadeable. SWPA Generation schedule (#12 TRD) http://www.swpa.gov/generationschedules.aspx I usually use the IPhone web app and click on the SWPA Forecasts icon http://92dde882-3cfb-4c7f-adcc-87502002a0c8.conduitapps.com/landing/Desktop#.Vgwcciu8mUm
  5. Just thought I would share this in case someone else was thinking of making one (or buying one). Thanks Phil for blazing the trail. I made a 20" x 10" x 4" photarium the other day for taking macro photos of fish. I went to PolyFab here in Springfield and got a 2ft x 2ft piece of 1/4" acrylic for $25. They also threw in a partially used tube of Weld-On for putting it together (Thanks PolyFab!). It took just a little over 2 hours to make. I might add a carrying strap of some kind, so if you see some guy in waders with a big hat, a big backpack, a fly rod, and an aquarium slung over his shoulder, that's me! I'll post more pics once I get some fish in it.
  6. Hi Alex, thanks for the trip. We had a great time! Sorry, a little late responding Here are a few of the pics I took: This is that secret spot where you caught the 30-incher, shh: Threw a chub into the mix: McCloud: A few flies that came off the water: Some FishFX photos from the McCloud trout (need to get a photarium):
  7. Hi Phil, yes I did. Thank you! That day, I lugged around a full frame camera with a 100mm macro lens. I normally carry a small Sony RX100m2 in my waders, which also takes good high-res macro pics. A pupa/adult fly project would be cool. I have photographs (varying quality) of several different pupa that I've come across. If you ever want a third hand to tag along with you and take pics of fish or bugs, let me know I often see this one wiggling it's way to the surface:
  8. Ok, maybe the one small ignorant, starving, or curious trout will. I've caught one or two trout on an American flag inspired midge, but the P&P consistently produces 'better' results. So I'll re-phrase my original question: Has anyone seen a living midge that the P&P resembles??
  9. You cant just make any ol' fly and expect the trout to gobble it up wherever you're fishing. The two most successful midges that I use on Taney just happen to be ones that I created from direct observation. That isn't a coincidence. One of them doesn't even catch fish at Bennett. I would bet that the P&P is based on larvae that someone (the Parkers?) found and tried to mimic. Maybe not though.... Here's the finished bug product. It looks sort of "rusty" perhaps?:
  10. Does anyone know what the inspirational larva is for the very popular and effective P&P? I've fished Taney many times over the past several years, and pay close attention to the bugs, but this is the closest to a P&P larva that I've come across. There were hundreds of dead ones scattered around on a large rock up closer to the dam, but this one still looked alive and still undergoing metamorphosis:
  11. thx Crazy4! I wondered how he could see what he was doing. The fog was developing, then dissipating, then developing, then dissipating pretty fast though. Paranoia would set in just watching the wake come and then trying to "run". At least that's my experience...lol
  12. To any Crane Creek fishermen. I would like to take some photos of the McCloud trout for artistic purposes. If you wouldn't mind for me to silently tag along with you while you fished, and snap photos of the fish you catch, I would appreciate it. I have briefly tried to fish it several times myself without any luck (read 'skill'). If you are a guide and your party would like some photos of themselves fishing at Crane, I could edit a few for them and/or you (free of course, in exchange for the tag along). Or, I could also carry beer for you in my backpack haha....your choice of beer! Or, I could just be there if you are afraid of snakes Message me if you are interested or email jflycaster@outlook.com Thank you!! Edit: I'm very flexible with time, so any time is good.
  13. Just saw this thread. At 40mw, wading is kept to the edges (I'm 5'9"). In most places that I fished, the drift was still a tad too fast for decent midging, but that was up near the dam (narrower/faster water). I landed a few up there though. Nice little brown Crazy4! Pic of a lone fisherman in the fog that morning :):
