  1. Jim Lovan, haven't heard that name in a while! Jim is from my hometown, Steelville, Mo. Great family and parents. Jim and my brother Rick were buds back in the day. I was a 7 yr old kid when Jimmy (as I know him) was the hometown hero hitting a 3/4 court shot to beat our rival Cuba in basketball. Homecoming game I believe in 1980. Great to see him doing what he loves. I graduated from smsu and get down there to see college friends and to fish. Definitely going to go see Jimmy. Man, how I remember that shot! When U guys see him tell him Brock Bouse says hello and dishing a little dirt on his past!
  2. Phil, My friend and I were two of the boats that went by you first thing Thursday am. I was in the old flat bottom with the yamaha jet. I said hello but didn't know that was you. I could hear him in the background on your video. You looked busy reeling in fish! We had a great couple of days in the area, had to work for them though. Our fish were about 50-50 shallow and deep. I had my first experience with my new spider rig that I made. I did like it, although I lost a good rod! We were laughing about the parking job, but it was no big deal. Thanks for the stickers, I will proudly display on the old rig. 18 yrs with my college buds for our annual fishing trip and it was a good one. No floods, hail or sleet this time! Talked to a lot of folks saying fishing was slow but they were enjoying the nice temps, wind was tough at times especially in my rig. Most folks were catching a lot of shorts and we had a lot of fish just at 10 that we put back. Took some fish home for the freezer and probably will not be able to make it back this year so don't catch them all. Enjoy the reports from all on here. By the way my rod is about 50 ft off the bank up the cove about half way to the first inlet to where you were fishing, finders keepers!
  3. seems like the guys on here have some good ideas-yes I was referring to the mount in the pic and making one similar. I have found on my boat that making brackets and the like are easier and many times more durable. For instance on seth's boat the trolling motor bracket is a simple piece of bent alum. I have one similar on my boat. Just an idea. Good luck
  4. you should be able to find a machine shop or welding shop near you that has the ability to bend a piece of sheet aluminum and make one to fit your application. Scott welding in Sullivan mo has done this type of thing for me on my jet. ask for Lonnie 573 860-3123. Just an option
  5. Fished out of Bridgeport yesterday from 10-4. Not as many crappie as i would have thought, only 4, 10-15". The lake was also down about a foot from two weeks ago when the same areas were just getting fish on the bank. Did catch a couple of nice 3lb cats and a few whites, all non targeted of course. Fish were caught on a 1/16th maribou jig and minnow.
  6. Found crappie last saturday and sunday on the bank above cape fair. Nice 13-15" females right in front of buck brush. Lots of action going on behind the buck brush in about 3 inches of water. Crappie have put on some weight in the last month. Good luck to everyone as they were mighty fun to catch and even more fun to eat! I Should be out this week. Oh well, honey do this, honey do that...
  7. I am looking for the graphics for a 85 yamaha 50. Mine are faded badly. I have searched the internet will a few results, but interested in any graphic shops that may be able to make them. Any thoughts?
  8. I built a 16/48 with a 50 yamaha jet (prop hp) about three years ago. I built alum. decks on the front and back. The thing go remember is weight distribution. Many people may disagree but I am a big fan of the blazer sport boats in 80 guage. a 17 or 18 56 is a big boat for many rivers. Extremely stable with high sides. My buddy has one with a 60 merc (jet hp) and it does great. Bigger and heavier is not always the answer. It is suprising that many boat dealers that set up boats do not go to extremes to get the weight in a boat pushed forward. For example, the gas tank, batteries storage and such can be put in the front of the boat. It is amazing the difference that one can see when you put some of those things in the front of your boat. Also another space saver is using a steering stick. I have a stick in my boat and would have it no other way. A steering console is big and would get in the way, especially in my 16-48. I built my boat with new boat, 85 yamaha jet that starts better than my buddies newer merc, with alum, floor, all the wiring, pedestals, seats trolling mtr, electronics carpet, stereo-all for $3,500. I had a blast doing it. Almost a thousand of that $ was for building the transom with gusset caps, done so by a local welding shop. Oh ya, also I painted the boat with epoxy primer that sealed everything wonderfully. Not meaning to go over all I did during the build, but maybe you can find what you are looking for used, learn how to use everything, and work on it as well. That is the thing about boats. You need to know how they work and how to fix in a pinch so you are not stuck. Especially on a river that flows one way! Good luck in the search.
  9. What is the water clarity like on Stockton? I was interested to see if the rains had much to do with the crappie bite. Possibly going to try some under the lights on Fri. eve. Thanks for the input.
  10. Fished flat creek and the james last week 17-20th found short males deep. Very slow overall, maybe a bite an hour when you didn't blow all over the place. Ended up fishing for bass and whites. Better than working but it is going to be a few weeks before I try again. Also the bites were very very light. I guess that is to be expected with the water issues. Not much traffic to speak of. I think we talked to 3 or 4 boats with a couple of guides trying to locate fish. I did see fish on the finder but couldn't get much of a pattern figured out other than on the short males. The few females we did find were full of eggs. Should still be some fish for future years if anything positive is to be said.
  11. Hello everyone. i am a new member to this forum though i have been reading the posts for the last few years now. We have a fishing trip next week on TR in the james river and flat creek arms. We are going to be chasing whites, crappie, and maybe catfish. Any ideas on what structure or patterns to concentrate on these species? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  12. On the Meramec downstream from the hwy 19 bridge in Steelville is a trophy smallmouth area. I used to float this stretch many years ago and have pulled many nice smallies in. You can gig on this stretch but during the past few years the water has been low, (may not say that for a while). My point is that giggers traditionally will not go to areas on a river that you must drag a boat on. Most guys will go kill 15 or 20, which is enough for a few guys to fry up, and they can usually find a few fish in easily accessible areas near a put in. I do know people who have gigged in this area and they see quality fish. Catching them in the warmer months is a timing thing. Canoes, rafts and people in tubes dominate our waters during the summer months. If you want to fish you better get out real early, mostly during the week and forget the weekends other than a few hours early and late. I have alot of friends that run these operations and they are hard workers and I wish all of them well, and most do real well. Canoe and raft operations make gigging or even jet boat restrictions on the meramec, huzzah and courtois seem like a joke. I believe that some day we will see restrictions on how many canoes or rafts can be put in at a time or by one outfit in a day. We may also see hp restrictions some day but I have seen some 40 yamaha's hopped up that would blow your mind. You current river guys can relate. In the summer the state boys big time frown on you if you run your boat in areas where canoes or rafts go, and they will stop you trust me. There are limited areas to run a boat during the summer which is why I stick with my 16 ft with a 50 jet. Hey we all like to have fun and if you stop gigging in sections of the river the fish will stack up where there is no pressure. I have seen it. I know a few areas that are a bear to get to. I will only go there when conditions are right. We have nearly sunk a couple of boats getting there and back because it is so rough. I can't recall seeing more or larger bass in these areas that I know see less gigging pressure vs another that is commonly gigged. I would hate to see what a year without gigging would do to the river. The numbers of fish are amazing now, and there are thousands that are taken out annually from our area. If you have never gigged befor maybe you should try. As said earlier, hard to beat fried sucker fillets on the river.
  13. I am new to the site although I check it often for all of your good info. On the gigging thing I live near the Meramec river. I have gigged all my life and enjoy it very much. The season is very long by some accounts but river conditions that past few years have been much to be desired. Two years ago we couldn't see more than a couple of feet for two months, although the past season wasn't bad. We do see a tremendous amount of bass, both large and small on every trip, and that is part of the fun. Some people think we are crazy, but gigging is best when it is below freezing and the bugs are gone. Also the colder it is the better the water is. I hate to hear that morons have to kill bass to eat or gig fish that they cannot identify. It can be hard at times when gigging deep to see what a fish is, but normally the bass just sit there and give you a good photo op. In our area gigging is the norm and may be in yours as well, but the MDC boys do a pretty good job of keeping an eye on things during the winter months. Word will travel as to who is violating the rules. Someone will run their mouth and the MDC boys will eventually catch up with them. Guys that gig game fish probably violate other rules while hunting and fishing. Maybe I have bad luck, but I have been checked a few times and trust me, if they want to find a violation it can be done. The guys in my group always try to follow the rules. Also, you will be ticketed for killing too many suckers. And other than crappie, there is no other fish (maybe walleye) that I would like to eat. That is just my opinion but fresh suckers fried on the river bank is hard to beat. I will be going crappie fishing in a couple of weeks, and due to conditions I will throw a bag of sucker fillets in so we will have something to eat! I enjoy the conversation and the various topics.
