The Life and Times of Stacey King: 1986 to 2016

I was fishing Lake Taneycomo around 2001. My buddy and I were throwing jerk baits for Browns. As we came around the bend we noticed a boat close to the bank with 2 guys fly fishing. We gave them a wide berth as we passed, and one of the guys turned around with a big smile and asked how we were doing. I immediately recognized him as Stacey King. We slowed down and had a short conversation. He was very friendly and cordial, I have a fond memory of him.

The first time I remember seeing Stacey King was on a Bassmasters TV episode. He was paired with another pro. This young man was in contention to win and Stacey basically mentored him to the win. He had nothing to gain from it, but did everything he could to help the young man.

The next time I remember seeing him was another Bassmater episode from the following year. Stacey won the event on Toledo Bend stroking a jig on a flat at the motuth of a major mid lake creek.I immediately thought 1) Those are fish I would never have touched and 2) Good for him. Karma is a bogus concept, but I sure am glad he got the win since he was so selfless the year before.

I would loved to have fished with him and learned more from him in person.

Great article and some good links!!! I don't believe that you will ever find a finer gentleman and fisherman than Stacey. I've had the privilege to fish with him on several occasions and it's always a fantastic experience. I'm so happy he beat cancer and can continue his passion of tournament fishing. Good luck to you Stacey and God bless you.
