    Quick report

Fished last night at cable 9 to midnight. 2 of us caught 1 Wally 1 brown an 11 bows. Threw plugs but they didnt seem to want big ones. Hitting light. Wife caught a nice fat bow 18 inches. Buddy caught a nice brown below 2 today. He thought it was approximately 5 lbs. On pink furbug. Getting ready to head back out and see if it looks like a Christmas tree of headlamps on the water.

    The Praying Mantis

So the guy preying mantis was at the bar having a few. Bartender asked if he wanted another. Guy preying mantis says sure why not, my wife's gonna eat my head off when I get home regardless.

  4. I remember the advice given several years ago on Pomme. Wind from the same direction 3 days in a row and you will have all the white bass you want to.play with. Everybody has different techniques and methids, up the river it's different current can be a key, there is a bank about 100 yards long on LOZ that if the wind hits it for a couple days he whites and hybrids are so close to the bank you can literally crawl a white jig off the rocks and into the water about 2 feet max before one will smack it, occasionally that white will run right past the boat and head for open water, screaming drag

  5. FW - Pay attention to the wind direction, if it is from same for three days, you will not believe the fish that stack up along the shore. Back when I could still walk the rocky banks at the Bona bridge you could catch a limit hasta-pronto. I have seen people beach their boats so they could catch some. The fish wanted the jig moving in to the shore. Real fun with a fly rod and a 1/16 chart. jig. Hope for 10+mph for those three days. Try it, you will like it.

  6. Didn't throw topwater long because it was really shallow for the most part. Had one nice smallie on a ned rig jig. Caught some other tiny ones and a few rock bass. Slower day for the most part and it was windy and cold in the shade for most of that stretch.

  7. Years ago bass jigs were one of the lures I fished with but I fished other baits too. As time went on I seemed to still fish jigs, perhaps less often, and fished the latest bait that just came out on the market. Now, as you can probably remember, back then there seemed to be a problem with most of the “store bought” jigs and I would end up fishing with the best of those and not necessarily the best possible jig. My bass fishing with jigs started just a little over 60 years ago. Things have changed over that time but a renaissance in the use of jigs for bass came back around and gained fa

  8. I am wanting to get on a good fall while bite but the wind will come out of the south then west then north then east. It makes it so hard to get a pattern. I located some Thursday (14) took Friday off for business then with a good north wind (42) Saturday. Now the wind is changing again. I have my best days on the 3rd day that the wind is out of the same direction.

Rolling in the greens, After a lousy start the Fall greens produce. One bed an army of army worms marched through all but destroyed it. The other bed and wicking tubs did well. I am so glad Lettice is cold tolerant as two frosts have hit no problem, BilletHead

I see you all are eating well as are the BilletHead's, Todays meal started with a hen of the woods casserole . We have been watching a pair of hens growing now for 10 days. Walleye battered and fried, As this was happening I went to garden to pick lettuce. I washed and made salad, All ready and proceeded to fuel our bodies., Something from the lake, woods and gar

  15. Jerk bait bite is still good early in the morning. Been getting big browns to chase and hooked up but loosing them before the 8 second horn. Catching a few good bows on the jerk baits and some really aggressive ones. Been fishing Fall Creek to Lookout. Some pretty good browns in that stretch.

    crappie on Pomme

Talked to the MDC fisheries guys on 10-18 they had several nets set for 3 day's around the lake, crappie numbers were very good and a lot of crappie were caught, example of one net directly across form Nemo ramp was approx 70 in three day's , I fished all day the 18th and got 1- 10" and 1 - 6" guess the net fishing is a lot better.

  20. Walking around the yard today I came upon this rather large praying mantis and decided to get her portrait. She was fat laden with eggs. I felt sorry for her mate that she consumed after he got lucky. After a bit of coaxing i got Mrs. BilletHead to model the mantis, BilletHead

    What's Cooking?

Redux tonight on the apples and sausage, this time using Granny Smith like you suggested. That was the ticket! That and a switch to patty sausage (Rice’s medium) took it over the top. This was delicious. Old recipe updated.

  23. Water temps are important. Under 60 degrees, topwater probably won't be the BEST option, but it can produce fish down through the 50s, and on special occasions even colder.

  24. Made it down to beautiful Lake Taneycomo over the weekend October 10-14. Overall I felt fishing was a bit slow compared to my last fall trip I made down catching numerous browns. Made the best of the weekend with the rainy and chilly conditions we had. It was mainly cloudy and rainy the whole time we were there. Didn't get skunked by any means but had to work a bit for them. Didn't see a whole lot of rods bent during the trip either especially the combat fisherman at war of Outlet 2. Only managed one brown while I was down out of all the fish we caught and the rest were bows. We got to the par

    What's Cooking?

Was on Grampa duty today. Daughters birthday was yesterday and she requested some fresh crappie for supper. My wife told her there were some in the fish bowl. You know how some days everything is perfect, brown on the taters and onions, fish crispy on outside and oh so tender insude, cornbread with just right amount of crust! Yeah well this was that day at all. However everyone seemed to lime it, if judging by the amount they ate. Photo would have been ugly, but taste was good on everything.

    Fall Football

Caught this football last weekend. I don’t think she was much more than 15-16” but was every bit of 3+ lbs. She bit a mag trick worm on a bluff end. That mag trick worm on a 5/16 oz shakey head catches a ton of quality fish from May through October. Lost 3 nice ones including a 5+ on the Whopper Plopper (Midway back in a big creek). Had them on for 5-10 sec before they pulled or jumped off. My bite to land ratio has always been awful with the 130 size. Going to try some #2 Owner Stinger 3X ST-56 Trebles and see if those will make a difference. Also caught a lot of solid fish on the new Tackle

    Crappie Bite

Actually most of the game fish are on their way up following the shad that are heading towards cooler water now. The fish I was catching in 12-15 water are now much closer to the banks in somewhat shallow water near deeper water. I suspect that the thermocline this summer was in the 25 to 30 foot range as fish were definitely suspended most of the summer around 12' to 20' or so. Makes for tough fishing or only catching early mornings or late evenings. Suspended fish are "not" actively feeding and are the most difficult to catch. As the shad move more shallow this will excite the game fish and

Still getting some beans, did a late planting around the end of June, variety is called Eureka. A bush bean plant, I like the yellow color, makes them easier to see when I am picking them. I get colander full about every 4 days. But, the end is near.
