Floated Blunts to Bass’ River this Friday and Saturday . River was low both days and busy on Saturday. Small mouth were being caught on red crawfish imitation crankbaits. Get it under the trees behind a current break and the fish would hit it.

I checked the radar forecast when I got up this morning and it showed rain coming around noon, so I went to the State Park and got there at 7. Walked up a couple hundred yards and started with the white/peach egg. Caught 3 on that and then started seeing some fish rising. I switched to a sulphur crackleback and a few minutes later hooked a big cuttie. He put up quite a fight and after about 15 minutes and chasing him halfway back to the walk-in point, I finally got him in the net. Beautiful male in his spawning colors. Caught 2 more rainbows and then started hearing thunder so I left at 9. Lots of rain and thunder here at the house right now. We did need the rain.

Back in the winter I posted on a different Big River thread about a rumor circulating around town that the Newbury riffle placed across the river a little downstream of Desloge had been removed.  I can now confirm that the rumor was true.  For whatever reason, the powers that be took out the middle section as seen in the pics below.  I accidentally ran it this morning and somehow made it to the bottom relatively unscathed.  If you float through this section, be cautious and have a plan.  This is a good place to lose some gear or risk injury if you're not on your toes.  My decision wasn't the best, but fortunately it all worked out.  On a positive note they've done some stream stabilization work with some big rip rap rock down below the riffle as seen in one of the pics that, IMO, is going to make the fishing below the riffle even better.

Here we go, we start with this....
    1996 17' Xpress
It has a Force 40 on it (Getting rid of that POS), and not enough storage to be a decent bass boat, so.......

A repower is in the works, as is a front deck extension, and a flyfish friendly trolling motor.
If you might be interested in a rig like this and have any special requests.....let's hear them.   Now's the time 👍

This is why I'm not a huge fan of WELDED Jon boats
It's the only blem I can find anywhere on the boat (on the bow top cap).......but it will get fixed proper.
She's rated for 70 HP but I'm thinking 30-50 would keep her nimble and reasonably light.   Being able to run shallow and navigate sketchy spots is more important than being able to blow your hat & sunglasses off. 👍

Since fishwrench showed his I want to show mine. Only thing left to do is get the oars. I want to be able to use it like a drift boat on Taneycomo. Although you have alot more control with the old style foot control trolling moter, I really like the spot lock. And cruise control. I do better using fly line in a boat without decks. It's easier for me to keep it out of trouble.

My son and I went Snakehead hunting/fishing yesterday. Pretty uncharted territory in East Central Arkansas. They can be literally anywhere that connects with Little Red, White, Cache, Black, or St Francis rivers.
I’m still learning/figuring the fish and the locations out.
AGFC has a map showing all the locations that they have been documented in. It’s impressive. Hard to get a hold of and I don’t have a good way of displaying it here.
Bad news for me is none of it is close. 2-4 plus hours each way.
They can be Super Spooky or dopey as heck and easy to fool.
Super Aggressive or totally shut down. I have no understanding of why.
Hollow Body Frogs is still my starting point, but I am also throwing flukes, Chatterbaits, and Spinnerbaits at them.
we rallied and got 5 nice ones yesterday after our first three stops were not right. Biggest is 25. Smallest is 19.5 inches. It is ABSOLUTELY illegal to transport them alive. I cut the throat/gills out to bleed them out. I got 5 lbs of filets off these 5 fish. Meat had a firm texture and a mild taste. it can be very difficult to get your bait back. I’m Sorry that I can’t get better pictures. They are slimey and keep struggling until their throat is cut. I’m focused on not rolling canoe, not get hooked also, and not losing the fish over the side.

Greasy B reacted to top_dollar in Mounts to TDL 5/27
I fished Mounts to TDL this past Saturday for the first time this year.  It was low, and seemed a bit dingier than usual.  I could see bottom in about 3 FOW.  It was a pretty good day for me, although I was solo which makes fishing that stretch way easier.  I caught about 25-30 bass and a few sunfish.  Most came on a worm, but caught a handful on a jerkbait and top water.  Also caught some bigger fish than usual, I caught 3 bass 15+ and another bass was 17+.  I did catch a large redear, almost 11 inches long, it was probably a personal best for me.  I fished a megabass X-nanahan +1 instead of the usual X-rap 8.  I dont know if it caught me any more bass than an xrap would have, but it sure looks good in the water.  Ill be picking up a few more of those.

Fishing gets a little sweeter with time.  Time on the water, that is…. Said it numbers of time in the past.  You can have all those bells and whistles out there on your boat but nothing is more valuable than time.
Got started early.  Right at dawn.  Just love this time of year.  WT was 70-74.  Water clarity was slightly stained and lake elevation was 1126.3.
I dropped the trolling and wasn’t seeing fish in 17-15 fow and immediately went shallower.  Just instinct I guess.  I said to myself.  You know I’ve caught them along this flat in July in 85 degree WT at this depth when the lake level is about where it’s at now.  Don’t know why they wouldn’t be there now.  So got a little shallower.  Caught one right away in 13 fow. Followed by another in 12 fow.  Said ok ones a fluke but two is a pattern.  Stuck with working  a little ways off the bank in 13-11 fow with baits down about 10 feet.  Was steadily catching keepers and in between that was dink crappie.  I caught so many fish I literally got tired of catching fish.  By noon I was out of ammo…. 8 dozen Minnows lol….  Ended with 13 toads and 4 good size Kentucky’s.  My uncle Sonny would say where there’s little ones there’s big ones too.  There Absolutely was!
Basically I went back old school minnow rigging.  I never really saw them on scope.  Just occasional back of one off the bottom.  I only scope 2 good fish the whole day.  Felt good
Setup still minnow rigging BnM poles 16ft PST’s and 1oz minnow rigs that I tie up using Pico Lures/Vanguard Tackle.  This will be the set up I use until October.
Busy next several weeks.  Hopefully everything will pan out good.
    Good fishing and God Bless

Anyone for a Cup of Coffee! I built this one with an epoxy center handle and walnut hoop. It took a few pours to get it done right which made for a long drawn out process. Also the polishing was bananas. All and all this is a one off if there ever was one.

This is up for auction and you can check that out here

Also, we didn't fish but it looks like any part of this below Hutchins Creek would be good fishing with some nice holes and pools.

For trash, it wasn't terrible but unfortunately most of what we saw were large trash items like tires and the white plastic wraps from round bales.  These wraps are large and become a nightmare to remove with any water or sediment trapped in them.  We picked up a few bottles, beer cans, airplane bottles, etc. but that type of trash wasn't terrible.  It was just some of the bigger stuff and we didn't try to get that with this trip being a complete unknown.

We recently put in at the slab on CR 4280 which is 2 miles upstream from the confluence of Hutchins Creek and ended at Short Bend.  A guy with a smart watch measured it at 13 miles or a tad more.  We were dropped off at the slab as it didn't look like a good place to leave a car.  The Cook Station gauge was at around 300cfs.

The trip was scenic but nothing spectacular as many parts were rather pastoral, especially the first 7 miles or so..  Many minor springs pour in along the route which are pleasant.  The first two miles was pretty low and scrapy.  Parts are barely wide enough for a kayak.  It is true creek at this point.  At 2 miles in, Hutchins Creek tripled the flow or more and it became A LOT easier.  I plan to scope slabs at CR 4270 and CR 4280 on that one which one looks like easy access off Hwy MM from the maps and maybe try that again next time as it looked more floatable at the confluence.
Another slab at the end of Hwy W 4 miles into the trip must be portaged.  This would make for a good access to avoid the upper slow parts with little water.  Also, the scenery and sportiness of the river increase after getting 7 miles into the trip and just gets better until the end.  You get many technical turns and such during the last 4-5 miles of this trip.  Bluffs also increase in size and become more impressive.  A steep sporty drop exists just before the Short Bend Bridge.  You have time to react and decide to run or portage this bridge after the drop.  The right bay was mostly open so I ran it without trouble.  The others decided to portage.

Hwy 19 and the public access come shortly after this.  Overall it was a worthwhile trip but wouldn't be in a huge hurry to go back considering the logistics of being dropped off and such.  I would definitely either try Hutchins Creek down or likely cut off the top and put in 4 miles down at the slab near Hwy W.  You can get better scenery and similar or better sportiness from Short Bend to Wesco.
Log jams were also pretty much a non-issue.  There were snags to avoid but nothing crazy.  The section below Short Bend has more logs all the way across than this part.  I was concerned this section might be worse but it wasn't.

I was fishing a county park lake yesterday for bluegill for fish tacos. Still not spawning at this lake but found some 7.5-9" gills in deeper water and strung up 10 which is plenty for a couple meals for me. Only 9am so kept fishing. I'm using 2# Maxima mono with a 1/48 duck feather jig on #12 sickles to keep things interesting and then I hooked another fat gill and it really got interesting. Bass engulfs my 1/2 lb. bluegill right off the top, quickly I open my bail and give her a chance to swallow it. She does and after I set the hook it was on for five minutes before I lip her.  I got a good look at her and started shaking with excitement. Grabbed scale and tape. She weighed 10.23 lbs. Length was 24.5" with an enormous girth of 21". Took a few pics and released her, splashed me as she bolted away. Stopped fishing then, perfect way to end the morning.

Neither my dog nor I are spring chickens. In our younger days we spent a lot of time together on a kayak or in a canoe.  These days we either wade or go hit small lakes/ponds on the Bass Raider.  We decided to take a couple of days exploring a creek in NW Arkansas.  Day one was a bust, only dinks.  Day two was better.  We caught 15 in 3 hours, most of them were small but 4 were 14"-15".  It was fun and I was thankful that we had another good day together.  He was a tired old dog at the end of the day.  So was I.

I heard through the grape vine that a guy had an old Champion bass boat stored in his barn for a few years. He and his wife bought it and had never had any lessons or been around boats all that much and then decided they weren't boat people. I went down to check it out last Tuesday and drug it home. Not bad for a 1993 Champion 17'6" SC Contender. It had a Mariner 150 and an old MotorGuide Troll motor with it along with some old electronics. Been fun cleaning it up. I'm sure glad he put it in the barn instead of letting it sit outside in the wind, rain and sun......

I just floated it last week down to Blackwell.  No hazards.  The lowwater bridge at what used to be Cole's Landing (private) is open and clear; sometimes the box culverts going under it can be blocked by logs but it's completely clear of logs now and you can take any of the three culverts under it.  A massive log jam a couple miles below the Highway 67 bridges that was a big problem a couple years ago has a path through it now that is easy to negotiate in all but high water.  An old lowwater bridge a couple miles above Blackwell is now on a nearly dry side channel, and the main flow goes around and over the steepest rapid in this stretch, but it's short, open, and deep; you'll just encounter foot high standing waves in it.  You'll like the scenery, but there is a lot of slow water.

Finally starting to see low water on the Norfork as well as reduced flows on Bull Shoals. I met a friend and we went to Ackerman access this morning to be greeted by minimum flow. Fishing was good using an egg/midge combo early and then switching to a green butt soft hackle later on when some caddis started hatching. Ended the morning with around 3 dozen rainbows with a few nice ones in the mix. Missed quite a few strikes with the soft hackle by setting the hook too soon.
Here's a few of the better ones...

My buddy Dan and I left out about 1030 this morning looking for hybrids and walleye….after failing to locate any schools we decided to fish jerkbaits in the hopes of picking up a couple.  We did pick up one hybrid, but the multi species bite was absolutely off the charts today.  No pics of the LM or drum, just the two spots I “removed” and the other miscellaneous fish we kept … all on jerkers.  We finished up about 5.  Decided to dispatch the spots, whites, and green sunfish immediately.  Delicious.  Chunk rock. Bluffs, ends.  3-25 FOW.
