  1. An Aldi just opened up in the former Lucky’s market space a couple blocks from me. The selection is sparse, but what is there has been good quality and well priced. We buy allot of staples there. Prime rib is all about the grade of meat. Get some USDA prime, for the least amount of $.

  2. They will start crawling out of the ground once the soil temps reach the mid 60's. Late April or May when the morels are about done. They burrow out, crawl up a treee, crack their nymph shell and emerge a creamy white with tan orange eyes...They color up dark in about an hour as their wings unfold. It is kinda cool to watch that process. JD has the idea....It is the splat/smack. Paddle down river, look for a tree LOADED with cicada's and slap a bass popper with rubber legs under that tree. It does not have to look like remotely like a cicada, but it has gotta smack. Adding a little weight and epoxy to your bugs increases the smack. Good luck.

  3. Fun place, we usually stop by for some fishing and dinner if in the area. The girls are usually done fishing in 45 or an hour, so the price for catch & keep is the way to go (lots cheaper for 4), Did you stop by the new Bryant Creek State Park? It's just up the hill towards Monks.

  4. Probably not, it does not get logged out like most of the float streams. Coldwater, me, and my late friend Roy came across a heck of a log jam on the L. Piney above Newburg 20+ years ago. It was 200 yards of solid log jam, 50' high. We took a break to contemplate it and eat lunch before we hauled around it, but in the meantime a gentlemen farmer found us. We plied him with a couple of beers and soon our canoes and gear got hauled around the log jam with that farmer's 4 wheeler. Be prepared to hump it if you go.

  5. Cooking from Scratch is still there I think. Haven't been by there in awhile, but we always loved their fried chicken, and they had a 66 oz Route 66 burger challenge. It has been a good weekend to cook! Did some pot roast and homemade mashed potatoes on Saturday. Posole with hot tortillas slathered in butter, honey, and lime was yesterday. Tonight is left over pot roast and we are gonna make potato pancakes.

  6. You all have mad cooking skills! Do you take requests? Neighbors are coming over for diner Monday night and their little one (Cindy Lou Who) asked if I was making Lasagna for Xmas again. There will be some!

  7. I have not seen any sign of hogs, but I do not venture out of the river corridor much unless I'm turkey hunting on the Pioneer Forest. Gene K is down there allot more. He has property to maintain off the Parker Hollow Rd.

  8. You can use anything you want to create a fly! The UV stuff seems to be popular with the current generation that is into Euro/Streamer, etc. It is nothing new. Dentists have had that stuff for 45 years, and it works pretty well. That said, I really don't care about fly durability. I pretty much chuck them in the trash when I break down the rod. If its a setup I'll fish again, It will stay strung up until the next trip.

  9. We haven't seen any feral hogs in the ONSR yet, but thanks for the heads up. We haven't seen an mountain lion or bear either. There are plenty of armadillo's.

The presence of hogs might explain why I haven't seen the usual numbers of Turkey down there though.

  10. Another trip to Montauk is on the books. The river was low and crowded, but the  fishing was pretty decent till 8:30 or so Friday & Saturday. Had to run back North to Salem for a bike inner tube  on Friday and we stopped for lunch at JB Malone’s Bar & Grill west of the Walmart on 72. We will be back. Loop 4 & 5 construction is creeping along. There are no pads poured in Loop 5 but it looks like it will be full hookup RV sites. I don’t think it will be ready by March 1 but that is the plan.IMG_1465.jpeg

  11. Big Creek is the float at SAB but not for rookies, there are several shut ins. Do not try to paddle Big Creek through the park. It braids and gets super skinny. Take out is the lot south of SAB lodge. It’s not always floatable,  easy to twist an ankle in the cantaloupe sized rocks and it’s got plenty of rattlesnakes.
