New species, I believe it's a Red Ear Sunfish,  just doesn't have a prominent red mark.  Personal best crappie in a public pond I never knew held crappie.

Haris122 reacted to Al Agnew in Access to and floating on Dry Fork of Upper Meramec???
There are long stretches of the middle Dry Fork that are so completely dry that the stream bottom will be covered in weeds and saplings most of the time, even lacking isolated pools.  There are permanent pools and occasional flow in between for a few miles above Little Dry Fork, and a tiny bit of permanent flow from there on down.  But access is pretty much non-existent.  There are only three bridges, including the Highway 8 bridge, crossing it in the over 19 miles between the Little Dry Fork and the mouth.  And only one of them, the one just below the Little Dry Fork, is a possible access, and even it has no real parking.  Only the last 3 miles, in the Woods Conservation Area, are really accessible.
I've talked to guys who have floated it.  You obviously have to know somebody and you have to catch it after a rain, or be willing to walk your boat long distances in bare trickles.  And it's murky to muddy more often than not.  But there are some big pools that hold fish.  The guys I talked to said that smallmouth are fairly rare, but the largemouth can be good.
It's an intriguing stream.  Dry Fork is longer, and has a bigger watershed, than the Meramec does above where the two come together.  If it wasn't a losing stream, it might be a premier float stream; it certainly has a lot of bends and probably, from what I can tell from topo maps, a lot of impressive bluffs.  But you trade that float stream for Maramec Spring.  As you said, nearly all the water that SHOULD be flowing through Dry Fork instead sinks underground to emerge at Maramec Spring.

Always thought Darters were some of the prettiest freshwater fish around, but I think the Candy Darter takes the cake.

    Perhaps recently saved from extinction;

Gotta be within @Johnsfolly s range. Give 'em a few years to spread, then have an 'accident'. ☺️

Yup. I remember reading it back then wondering about that section. Figured it was only fair to update the thread after finally floating it.

Been really wanting to finally hit up this stretch with the kayak after seeing part of it recently from the Glassberg conservation area overlook while hiking. Today I figured out a way to get shuttled to Palisades and made it down to Allenton. Was a fun trip. Overall there was a decent amount of cool scenery but I had to rush through it since I got there kind of late. Didn’t have any luck trying to catch anything throwing around a couple crankbaits which was a bummer but I enjoyed the float, even though it involved a lot of paddling.

Haris122 reacted to Hawg in Carp battle on the fly
Recently I’ve decided to try to familiarize myself more with fly fishing so I’ve made it a point to keep my fly rods with me in the truck. I have a 2wt and a 5wt.
Last week I was working in eureka and I decided to check out a spot on the Meramec before work and I caught two large mouth but while I was there I spotted some carp feeding on the surface. Couldn’t really see the fish because of the light and glare angle.
We finished the job early so I slipped back down to the bank and decided to go to upstream and climb a 15 foot tall mud bank for a better view.
I saw dozens of carp patrolling the edge in groups some feeding on the surface some on the bottom.
Some were huge. Fortunately I decided not to use my 2wt (though it was set up and ready) and I grabbed my 5wt and put a crayfish pattern on. About ten casts later agroup of five headed towards my fly and a I gave it a little strip.

They all spasmed at once and instantly muddied the water as my line went tight. I jumped down the bank as the fish headed out to the middle and down stream. I have no idea how I turned him back towards me. I think I had maybe five feet of backing left before he came back up river. I had four pound tippet on the end.
My dad and brother were nearby and took some photos and brought my net from the truck.

Took me about an hour and 45 minutes heh.

I personally enjoy catching the occasional oddball fish while targeting other species.  I have encountered a nice array of oddballs recently while throwing my favorite lure, the megabass 110+1 JR.  Figured you all might enjoy .  Most of these fish put up great fights!, was especially impressed with the drum

So far I've only done 8 to leadwood twice this year, once in early may, and once this past weekend.  It is fishing about the same as it always does for me in the summer.  You can see the bottom in about 3-5 feet of water, not much current in most places, and most of the fish I caught were in it.
I caught fish on my usual assortment of topwater plugs, jerkbaits, and plastic worms.  Mostly smallmouth, with the occasional largemouth and several panfish mixed in.    I caught more the last time than this past weekend, but I caught maybe 20 or 25 bass each trip, mostly between 10 and 15 inches.  The biggest was a 17 inch largemouth on a popper and a 16inch smallie on a worm.

I was down there briefly on Wednesday night and Thursday evening. Went wading in the trophy section by the hatchery, throwing mostly crank/jerkbaits. I got a grand total of maybe 3 bites, as did my fiance, and she usually has better luck than me. The trout kicked my rear those days.

Started early and had good luck right out of the box. Here’s a decent brown during his escape and a tank 19” rainbow.   I caught em pretty good till the sun got high.    Fished till 10:30 or so which is longer than usual and I regretted it.
I had my boat tied up and I’m walking back from the truck to get my fly gear and ‘Billy the guide came up and said my boat broke loose.
He ran down and got it off off the rocks.
There was a line of boats waiting to use the ramp and some guy blew through between the boats and the launch ramp dock where my boat was tied up.   Threw a big wake and tore the carabiner loose off of my boat.
He said the guy was plowing and was literally 6-7’ from the dock and about 10’ from the waiting boats.   I heard the screaming when I was at my truck.  The whole other side of the lake was wide open.  I got sick to my stomach when he said my boat was loose from the dock.   I thought maybe I made a mistake tying it off.

Got on the water a little after 5 and done by 9 or so.   Lots of stockers and these nicer ones.  Including a walleye!   I’m headed to a fish fry tonight and I’ll be over there again tomorrow morning.   I’ll be down here for 3 weeks or so and I’ll post when I can.  Gotta love working remotely.

Had a great trip to Pensacola Beach last week. Got to fly fish the surf and caught a ton of Ladyfish, a few Bluefish, and a fish I have no clue what is. Mostly used a 7wt except used an 8 last Friday.  They were eager to eat shrimp patterns I tied from previous trips to Belize for Bonefish and Clousers as well. Saw a bunch of sharks, mostly small, but a 6 foot Bull followed a Ladyfish a new buddy had hooked right up onto the sand! The June grass and seaweed gets pretty bad in the afternoons. Most days I fished, or tried to fish the beach at our condo, the last two mornings fished the National Seashore between P'cola and Navarre. Highlights of the the trip were, SRX racing at Five Flags Speedway (won by Helio Castroneves), watching the Blue Angels practice from Ft. Pickens, my son taking wife on a helicopter tour for her birthday present, and best of all, quality time with my family!

Here is a project I just finished for myself.  This is a Remington 700 I rebarreled to 6.5 creedmoor with a shilen barrel.
I decided to try the new Dura Blue coating from Lauer Weaponry.  It made a nice paint job but nothing like a real bluing like they claim.  But, I kinda figured that to begin with.
The stock is a Boyd's left hand stock, right hand action laminate.  Bushnell 6x24 scope I had in the scope counter at the shop.  The scope crapped the bed after five shots so it is getting sent back.
I still have to either do a trigger job or get an aftermarket of some flavor, free float the barrel, and bed it.  Right now I'm just going to concentrate on working up a load and breaking in the barrel.
First 6 shots at a hundred yards tells me this should be a good shooter once I tweak it some more.  The last 2 bullet hole were touching even with the scope having shot craps on me.
Just thought I would share it here.  I am a full time gun shop and do gunsmithing so it was kinda nice to actually work on a personal project for a change.
