My first time out since January 31, either because of bad weather or stuff going on in life, I haven't had an opportunity to get out until today.
Nice morning, little to no breeze, temps started out at around 32 and gradually warmed up to the mid 50's.  Water temp was 44-46 with a bit of a stain.
Launched about 0700 and started fishing a long rocky underwater ledge working a 110 +1.  Fished it for 30 minutes or so, caught a couple of 14" spots on the +1, but as I was fishing I was watching the depth finder and seeing a bass on the bottom here and there.  Just wasn't catching them fast enough on the JB, so fell back on the Ned rig.
First cast on the Ned, I caught a keeper spot.  Thought I was on to some hot fishing with it, but it wasn't hot, however there were bites to be had.  Worked the rock ledges, points and chunk banks, in the 20-30 foot range, and caught another 13 bass on the Ned, with 8 of them being keepers.  A couple of them were really solid spots.
Used a black Nutech crappie jig for my Ned rig, I have been using a chartreuse head last month and felt it gave me a better chance at catching smallies.  And I did not catch a smallie today on the black head, did catch a mean mouth, but maybe there is something to smallies liking that chartreuse head.  Guess I will have to continue with my 'research'.
Lots of people fishing today, 8 rigs in the Big M lot when I left and lots of boats running up and down the channel.

Flock of them moved in.  Almost that time of the year where they multiply.  We need more goose hunters.

Fishing was not bad, caught 16 bass, 6 of them being keepers.  All on the Ned, all still relatively deep, in that 20-30 range.  I tried some other stuff, Shad Rap, spinner bait, couple of casts with a jerk bait - no bites.  I'm stuck in a Ned groove.  But it's fun.

I haven't fished a lot out of the park, but didn't have a whole of success in terms of size there, but I haven't been throwing larger baits anywhere else on the river either. However, even if the fish don't hit those larger baits I watched a tactical bassin video about using those real over-sized baits for the area you fish to draw them out. They are curious and will come to check out the bait, so you could potentially see if there were fish in the area. I haven't really tried this myself, just passing on what I saw.

I bought a S Waver to try this year, and if I throw it on the river I will try to report back. I usually fish James river, just for easier access and pickups on floats.

The recent story above about an eagle that was found in our local area with lead poisoning had a great impact on me.
I always knew that lead had the potential to be dangerous to the environment. You always hear about how lead-free tackle is very beneficial in protecting the loon birds up North, but I never realized how much it affects the wildlife across the whole U.S.
I'm not against lead based tackle. In fact, I personally purchase and fish with a lot of lead jigs. I just wanted to let everybody know that there are alternatives available.
I have one of the largest variations of Ned Rigs and finesse jigs available at https://jadesjigs.com/
All Ozark Anglers members get a 10% discount at checkout using code: OA10
It is very challenging being competitive in a lead-based market. However, knowing that I may be making a small impact on protecting the precious resources that we have been given the responsibility to care for - motivates me to continue making lead-free jigs. Thank you for all of the support!

Had that itch to go for a couple hours so I grabbed a couple of rods and baits and went. fished off the bank from 5-7:30. Just to get out before the weather changes. Weather was nice,in the high 50's with a Southern breeze.Started with a 4" swim bait on a 3/8 head ticking the bottom. After about 10 casts I snagged and broke off. Pretty shallow bank probably 8' deep at the end of the cast. One thing that sucks sometimes about bank fishing is you can't go get your bait back 😄 I had one more pre rigged so I kept at it. No bites until after dark. That's when she bit.

Caught and released. Checked my knot and line for nicks, all good. Very next cast, snagged, and bye bye jig😐.
Went back to the truck grabbed the other rod with a 3/4 oz homemade red skirt gold blade single spin on it. Made about 5 casts and wham! Big fish on, got it all the way to the bank and saw it was a nice walleye 5-6lb I'm guessing. And she had it deep . Line broke when I tried to drag her onto the shore. ------- 😆 bye bye walleye.😮
tied on a jerkbait cuz that's all I had left with me , no bites.
Hope the weather isn't a flood . Lake is just getting back to where I like it this time of year. 🤞

I liked that they showed Randall Tharp's 4 rod setup up close during their General Tire anywhere is possible shpeel. Usually they don't give you very much detail unless it is one of the Major league lessons episodes or the winner of the day's number 1 bait.

I saw what seemed to be a good amount of fish caught on a regular jerkbait which surprised me for summer months. Anyone know if that's what David Walker was using in the first round? It seemed to be a white jerkbait that he was throwing on spinning gear to me.

Also I'm not sure about you guys but my DVR was showing it as a new episode but they keep showing the description as being in Shreveport Louisiana instead of the actual location when they air the cups. I am on Dish.....for now anyways, thinking about dropping them.

There was a good spotted bass bite yesterday,  Ned rig was working well on bluff banks, steep rocky banks, and around timber.  Fish were anywhere from 10 to 30 feet deep, most being around 20 feet.  I'm either slowly dragging the Ned rig on the bottom, or hopping it down bluff walls, but it's a slow hop.  For the most part they are really biting lightly, sometimes they'll thump it, but many of the bites are barely detectable even using braid with a leader.
I'm catching very few largemouth or smallmouth, yesterday I caught 2 largemouth, and one smallie, but caught close to 20 spots.
I did catch a few on a 110 sized jerk bait.  I think if I would have thrown the jerk bait all day I would have caught more on it, but the Ned rig is just getting more bites for me right now.
Got some background in this pic - who knows where it is?

Jim and I had an adventurous beginning to our trip, including a blown out trailer hub, but we eventually got to the lake for some winter bass fishing.
Location:  39 Bridge to Campbell Point
    WT:  49-52 degrees
Structure: Main lake bluff ends with the point deeper on the main lakeside.  Timber seemed to hold more fish.  Boat positioned in 40-70 feet of water depending on the rise of the point.
Baits:  3/8 oz jig head with a 2.8 Keitch (Electric Shad or Pro Blue Red)
Set Up:  Falcon Cara Swimjig Rod, Lews LFS Speed Spool 6:8.1, 20lb Power Pro, and 8 foot 10lb Berkley 100% fluorocarbon leader.
We started Friday morning looking for any schooling fish, but I think we started a bit too late.  We went into Mill Creek for a bit, but not luck there.  Next location we stopped at was a deep point, and I caught a small spotted bass on the little swimbait.  Moved on to the next point, and caught a 16 inch spot on the second cast, and started to figure out the bite.  I was throwing the bait up on the point, counting it down 12-15 seconds and crawling the bait across the bottom.  At one point, I counted in my head 7-8 seconds before I turned my reel handle a full turn.  At one point, Jim remarked, "I have never seen you fish this slow."  The bite would load up or a slight "tick".  Only had a few all weekend that thumped the bait.  However, all the of the fish we hooked solid in the mouth.  Friday, we caught and released 10-12 fish.  Jim even caught two decent fish on an A-rig in the afternoon.
Saturday, with the dead calm water and blue bird skies, we made the decision to go deep right away.  We headed back to the deep points, and we caught another 10-12 fish in the morning all on the little swimbait.  In the afternoon, I went solo and headed to the mouth of Mill Creek.  One of the points has pole timber, and I sat off of it in 50-60 feet of water on the shallower side.  In 90 minutes, I caught and released 12-15 fish with 8 being solid keeper spots.
Overall, it was a great trip and I learned much about fishing deep.  I still want to learn to catch more fish vertically and how to really take advantage of my Helix units.  Looking forward to our next adventure on the lake.  See you all in 2020 at the OA One Fish Tournament!

Bass have been biting pretty good on a Ned at Lake Springfield. I’ve been using a the craw ( forgot the name) and a TRD and have caught them pretty decently. Been there 3 times all from the bank ( got rid of Jon boat before I moved, want a better one or kayak) and caught 5, then 10, then 5 again in stints under 2 1/2 hrs. Colors I used were Canada Craw and The deal. A few fish came on Tx rig zoom finesse worm in watermelon red but the Ned has worked better. None of the fish had much size but I had to get at least one pic.

Fished Saturday from noon until 4:45.
Without electronics this time so I don't  have water temps.
Previous trip we had wind and clouds all day  ,this time it was high sky and very calm to start then a light breeze later in the day .
Fished strictly points again.  Deep bite early on finesse jigs in approx. 18 to 30 dragging the sides, and later in the day we fished the same points again but the fish moved shallower around 9 to 12ft and bit crankbaits . Again retrieve   speed was the trigger and  be touching rock or brush at some point  during  the retrieve because most bites came after it would hit a bush or rock  ,pause for a few seconds  so the lure would float up , and then really speed up to get their reaction.   They would grab it and start trying  to chew it like a worm bite.
Total of 17 keepers.   2 sm, 7 lm, 8 ky
Caught  dozens of baby bass ! Happy to see so many of them😃 .

Deep ,shallow, and in between is where we are catching bass. Have had several really good days of fishing and catching this Fall.  Started back in November fishing the deep bite with spoons and blade baits on deep flats. Fish stayed in the same general areas for a couple weeks which made for more time catching and less time searching. Concentration of fish we found were 35-55' with a few suspended in the  20's at that depth but most on or near the bottom. I'm talking about walleye, flathead, white and black bass. They were all mixed together.
Now December is here and we switched back to the shallow and mid range bite. Jerkbaits and crankbaits were working yesterday. Points at the mouths of coves is all we fished for 4 hours.Cloudy and wind. Around 40 bass between the 2 of us. Cranking these points from every angle possible in the 8-12' zone , retrieve speed was the most important thing. Had to be a certain speed  or they wouldn't bite the crankbaits. Had to finesse the bait through the brush while keeping the right retrieve speed also, that was tricky.
Same points we worked shallow small lipped suspending jerkbaits just under the surface in and around the brush. Was neat to see the flash when a bass would suddenly appear and strike!
Hope to get back out tomorrow and see what happens

This tree had some nice foliage last week.  Now it is gone, must have been some wind in the area.  😄

Fishing was fair as far as catching, I love being out fishing, but some days are better than others when it comes to putting fish in the boat.  Still digging them out of the rocks and trees, the fish I catch are almost always at least 10 feet deep out to 30 off steep rocky banks or points.  I did get a couple on cranks in front of the buck brush, but I had to throw cranks for two hours to catch those two fish.
Caught 9 on Tuesday, 14 on Wednesday, 3 keepers each day.  Mostly spots, one meanmouth and a couple of largemouth.
Ned rig, tube on shakey head, couple on cranks, and one on a small swim bait.
Early in the AM when the water is flat, there are a few coming up on top, they are scattered, not worth chasing IMO, but if they are close enough I will throw a small swimmer at them - caught a short walleye doing that and one bass.
Water temp was about 50 Wednesday afternoon.

This tree always had good fall colors, I think it is a cypress.  Only one around that part of the lake as far as I can tell, makes me wonder if it was planted there when the park went in.

Fishing was OK, started off fishing the Ned rig, couldn't get much of a bite on it, and the fish that I caught were mainly 12-13 inch spots.  Switched out to fishing a 2 3/4 inch tube on a 3/16 shaky head, and got better results, still mainly spotted bass, but got average size was better.  Only caught one smallmouth, a 12" dude, and only one largemouth, 14 incher.  Fish I caught were on bluffs, steep banks, and points, anywhere from 5 to 30 FOW.
16 bass, 5 were keepers - seems to be a pretty good year class of 15-17 inch spots in the lake this year.

Ended up fighting the rain and wind yesterday fishing from the ramp at hwy 39 down to Big M. Only boated 3, all spots, and possibly missed 2. Caught a small spot on a point with a small swimbait, another one on a tube in a cut in on a main lake bluff (got it on the fall and took off with it to the surface before I even realized I had it) and a tiny one under a dock near Big M. I did have one for sure miss pulling a tube down a bluff near Big M and it took off with it, but bent the hook out and came off. I was using braid and had pulled the hook off of a few trees prior so it was weak and had been bent back into place.
Water temps were between 51 and 53, 53 being farther away from Beaver. We suck at finding fish and understanding electronics, but didn't seem to come across any schools to confidently drop spoons too. Couldn't even find bait for the most part, definitely not a large concentration. The main thing we saw on the graph were a lot of leaves and trees. We did get to see a group of 7 deer (does and fawns) bedded down on the bank under some trees trying to avoid the rain. That was probably the highlight of the day for me.

Fished two days in a row.
Monday - Left late in the morning expecting fog early, got to the lake at 9 AM and it was still foggy, which kept me around Big M for a while.  I haven't had much luck lately around Big M and Monday was no better, couldn't get a bite or find any fish.  Fog finally lifted and down the lake I went.
Never got on them down there either, got a few, ended up with 11 bass, 2 keepers.  Caught nine of the on the Ned rig, fished off points, rocky banks.  Wind picked up in the early afternoon, so I worked a Deep Little N off a couple of banks and caught a couple of bass on it, one being a keeper largemouth.  Headed home at 2:30 PM.
Tuesday - Got to the lake early, no fog in the forecast and the forecast was correct.  Left the launch at 7 AM and headed downstream.  My favorite rocky point had fish.  Saw a few swirls on top, so started off with a 2.8 keitech and quickly caught a keeper largemouth and a keeper smallmouth.  The fish lost interest in the Keitech, so I switched out to a Ned and picked up another 5 fish, four being keepers on the Ned, dragging it on the bottom in 10-20 FOW.
That was it for the bite off that point, bounced around to a couple of other points, picked up one here and there, but no more than that at each location.  Decided to fish a bluff, started picking up spots on that bluff, casting the Ned to the bank and stair stepping it down the until it got down to 30 feet or so, then bring it in and repeat, moving down the bluff.  Had a good bite, picked up 10 spots, a couple of them were keepers.
Probably should've just stayed on the bluff, but I wanted to try and get another smallmouth or two, so left the bluff and hit some more points and rocky banks.  Caught a 12" smallie and a few more spots, but never picked up a good smallie.
Called it quits at 12:45 PM.  21 bass, 8 keepers.

I had a pretty poor day. 3 bass total and all tiny. We started back in the pockets and maybe that was our mistake. It was too windy for us to stand in the main lake as the day went on so may have missed our window. Threw a buzzbait, whopper plopper, spook, spinnerbait, chatterbait, swimbait, dark sleeper, Texas rig beaver, and a tube. Most all of what we fished were not steep banks due to the wind, but we did try docks, interior points, trees, gravel, lots of different areas. I think it was the fact that we missed the steep banks, but not sure. Saw water temps between 66 and 69 and saw a decent amount of bait fishing the lower end up to the dam, just didn't get it put together. Here's 1 of the 3 caught for giggles.
