  1. As I have posted before, Trout rank below bass and especially carp as well as even bluegills and crappie on the intelligence scale. According to studies from the berkley science department. So fishing on a cold water trout lake must give substantial diversity to the fishery. Not with just activity but productivity. Additions of the brown trout over decades have changed those numbers. Walleye is obsolete on the Lower, catfish is soon to be a dying species. Numbers of Bass and crappie are becoming depleted but are consistant. Maybe due to the increasing numbers of brown trout. I for one have adjusted to the change in the fishery but is it fair to those that want other species? Is it fair to establish a trophy trout fishery at the expense of other species? As a guy that catches numerous quality brown trout, I still see the cause and effect to the bass population. And as a fisherman in general, I can see the effect on cats and crappies. The bows dont eat each other, Browns eat everything. Your opinion on this subject could mean life or death to a culture. A dying culture to the Lower Taney. Cats and and bass being harvested nibbles away at the natural where the stocking nibbles of alpha fish like browns chip away at the natrual population.
  2. Tourney or not, that is still alot of boats in a relitively small area. Of course, My idea of alot of boats is when the sound of outboards never stop. Haha, Might be a need for some merging lanes and/or possibly a traffic cop up there. Some guy from India might set up a mini-mart. Take advantage of supply and demand issues. Haha
  3. There is not a huge population of goggle eyes in Taney. You basically catch them by accident while fishing for other species. Since Taney is a cold water lake, fish like blugill, sunfish, and goggle eye basically react the same year round. The only difference I have seen is that in the winter they tend to spread out where as in the summer they will like each others company more. You will have the best luck fishing the creeks on warm days. Anywhere there is a water coming into the lake that might provide a few degrees of warmth. On cold days the water coming in from the creeks could possibly be colder than the lake. In those situations you will want to stay away from the creeks and find cover. Anything that can absorb a little warmth from the sun.
  4. Well, the general Bass fishing term is "short" but you know me, I like to be different.
  5. Haha Snip snip...Didnt hurt a bit! Nice to know that some of us are keeping the pet population down.
  6. Welcome
  7. On lower Taney the goggle eye respond like bluegill. Just think shallow and out of the wind.
  8. In Panama, the outfit I worked for had Boston Whalers that resembled what you are describing. They work very well in the sense that they are very diverse in thier capabilities. The downside to them is that they tend to be very rough when in open water at high speeds while there is bad weather. Especially in wind that creates swells. Hard to control but still durable. Also, while in Mexico in '06, the outfit there had the same boats and the wind made them very uncomfortable to fish out of. Not to mention a very tender tush when we were crossing open water. Although, On Taney they would be perfect. A bit pricey and the platform option might be an overkill for fishing Taney's current and boating conjestion, you want to be closer to your navigation controls most the time. I personally like Lunds. Only because you can take them anywhere and in any conditions. I might add, since your putting a few dollars into your rigs, I might advise that even the most simplest sonar equipment will give your rental boats a bit of an edge. I know that down here on the Lower Taney, without a depth graph your in for a long day. If I am correct, I dont think that there is very many rental outfits that provide a boat with a graph. Just my 2.5 cents. My rig is a poor mans 16 foot seaking with a '61 evinrude. Home-made casting deck and all. wink
  9. I say "sport" when the fish is small. They give good sport and cut the boredom of catching nothing at all. Wink
  10. Very few Beaver and just a few muskrat. Nothing worth trapping anyhow. Just lots of otter, some mink, coon, skunk, possum. I believe that the miles are counted upstream. So mile nine would be 9 miles from powersite dam. As far as leaving your boat.....I wouldnt mind if you tied up to it so you can set/check your traps from shore but I cant say I would want anyone docking thier boat for any lengthy time. Sorry.
  11. I still have "the one that got away" pecking at my brain. So I went back to long beach bluff to see if I could find my lost destiny. Worked it for over an hour with no luck. I ended up fishing the adjacent point upstream to about the powerlines. Caught 2 sport bass and 3 bows off of a Rap.
  12. As a browser for a couple of years before I became a member, I like the status quo. As far as sharing information, I may give a few tips but I (like most fisherman) dont publicly disclose my "secrets". Thats kind of par when it comes to this hobby I believe. When it comes to accountability, Like all internet based exchanges, you have to take everything with a bit of skepticism.
  13. Age is a number and sex is a gender. What if it was the opposite? There is a real thought for the day. Haha

    Snow?

I got just 3 inches here
  15. When I was living in SC, the good old boys used franks and did very well. I saw 30 plus pounders.
  16. When I fish streams I am usually in a canoe. My general practice is to port above the holes I want to fish. As far as casting I shoot upstream and let the current carry my presentation.
  17. No worries, my son came to my house(wich is in the boonies) and back to his place near the college. It is 1am. No more snow is expected tonite. You will be alright.
  18. Im not pushing it. Last thing you want is myself controlling a bunch of fishermen. I would let them get away with murder. Haha
  19. Phil, Save them for when we go fishing together. will be fun to see how they work.
  20. Why? When I can take an old spinnerbait and strip the skirt and apply a 3 to 5 inch sluggo. And if I want to bulk it up I can put a 6 inch trailer line and add a rattle trap or a lil george. Still gives the perception of something big with the added benifit of alot more hooks. If your gonna perpetrate a fraud you might as well make sure you have the hooks to succeed. I personally prefer tying multiple presentations together when jigging. Of course I can jig for hours and catch just one fish. But that one will be better than small sizing. And if I lose the rig I might only lose 10 bucks.
  21. We get along like quarterbacks and defensive safteys...Haha Its all part of the sport. Locker room jesting
  22. Im feeling your love jscheetz...wink
  23. Haha, Goes to show that with a little evidence and alot of persistence that this is still America. Phil, according to jscheetz, I have my own forum! Does that make me a functionary moderator? wink I suppose that will be a discussion better held while we are catching Bass when fishing the Lower Taney together. All the same, I dont think I will be totally rid of the flyfishing talk. A fellow Lower Taney bud fishes exclusivley with a fly rod for Bass. He does quite well. He has been reading the forum for a bit but hasnt become a member yet. As far as all you Trav haters, You know where to find me. Im always willing to hear from ya.
  24. I get plenty of dinks on big baits. I know exactly what your talking about. I have entertained buying some of those foot long tail swimmers that them boys in Cali are catching those monster bass with. I just cant justify spending 30 bucks on a lure. Some go as high as $45. I loose so many rigs as it is and with a fixed income, I try to budget as much as I can. Haha, I can squeeze a penny so thin that you can see through it. Wink.
