Thank for this awesome forum.

We caught about 12 keeper crappie off the bank on Thursday. It appeared that the males were on the banks about 5 feet out or so. The females were out about 10 yards from the bank. We tossed several nice females back, but still were able to bring home a mess of slabs.

Pictures to follow.

We also went out of Cape Fair today. Caught 15 keepers, the best being a 15 inch 2lb crappie. Caught them all between 2-10 feet on jigs. Also caught 1-5 lb channel Cat on the crappie jig in the same spot the 15inch crappie came from.

Not sure if anyone has covered this before but the largest crappie of the day and a few others had a black stripe from the top of the mouth to the tail. Someone mentioned that these were hybrid crappie. Has anyone heard of that before?

I always like to catch the ones with the black stripe. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems like they're a little bigger and that they fight harder than the others.

They're not hybrids. They're a natural sub-variety of white crappie called "Arkansas Blacknose" crappie. They're native to the White River drainage area, so we have more of them here than the folks do in other parts of the country.

The black stripe is hereditary, and I've heard that some fish farms and the Arkansas Conservation Dept. use it to keep track of the crappie they've raised and stocked.

The "Arkansas Blacknose" variety has been hauled around some over the years. I've caught a few of them in Eastern Tennessee, and a friend told me he sometimes catches crappie marked like that in Southern California.

Thanks for the information, Sam. I have been wondering about that for some time now as I have caught a bunch with that stripe last year and this year.
