Members stock jockey Posted January 24, 2010 Members Posted January 24, 2010 Don, I have a question for you. I don't live down there, however I do come down a few times a year. If the conditions are normal, clear, what do you put all the settings on. This will help when I am down. I just installed the 1197 unit and would appreciate any input you could give. Thanks, Stock Jockey "

Thanks, Stock Jockey " Stock Jockey here are the settings on my 1197.. DI beam wide DI Freq. 455Mhz or 800Mhz (455 works great for me, 800 is more detail) DI sens 3-5 DI Color Brown DI Chart Speed 3 SI freq. 800Mhz SI sens 3 - 5 SI Distance 100 Feet 2-D Mode switchfire clear sonar beam 200/83khz chart speed 10 Now remember these change all of the time but these are the best for displays.. Also remember that on the sensitivity for SOFT bottoms HIGHER the sensitivity (6 - 10).. Harder the Bottom the LOWER the sensitivity (1 - 5). If you go too high on the rock your screen will get white, bring it down in levels and the screen will darken. Next the Screen speed, SLOWER the speed for more details! Higher the screen speed less detail (this is used for searching) .. Play with the screen colors on DI and SI it does make a difference... Any questions just drop me a post.. Good Fishing Don Capt. Fishing Buddy Don House Posted January 25, 2010 Author Fishing Buddy Posted January 25, 2010 Here are some interesting shots from today Jan 24... Never seen so many shad in one place during this time of year and very shallow to boot... Enjoy.. Down Imaging the haze at the bottom is all Shad, the White spot you see right above the shad is a fish in the tree top, Yes they are there now, right in the middle of the creeks, this one was in a mouth of a small cut off of the creek chanel!!! Si View Same Large group of Bait Fish.. So many shad you have a hard time seeing the the bottoms on each side.. Small pod of Bait fish in the tree top, in the zoom window... Fish Hanging in a tree tops... Upper right hand top... Notice the ditch and look what is in the ditch.. All of those white dots are fish.. Bummer is was we had some really neat 2-D with fish streaking as well but the S/D was full.. Enjoy everyone questions just ask.. Good Fishing Don Capt. jeb Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I worked for quite a while today and finally started getting some decent results with my DI. Seems there is a lot of variability in settings to get good results, and I can't explain why mine would be different than someone else's. I'm still not happy with some of the closeup stuff, but you can see the tree in the middle of the picture has good detail for branches, as well as a couple of others. So I guess the rest of the forest I was running over just didn't have as many branches left: Amber 2 down imagining picture Settings: DI sensitivity: 14 Amber 2 DI - Wide 455hz Chart speed - 3 SI enhance: sensitivity-13 sharp-11 contrast-low Surface clutter - 5 Noise - Med to High 2 2D settings like 200/83 vs 200 and Switchfire on and off didn't seem to make much difference, but surface clutter can a little, especially in turbulent windblown water. Flippin Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 Don, Thanks for the images. I enjoy seeing them and learning about the underwater world. I am saving my money now for one of those. I think the SI sonars will become the standard in electronics in the years to come. (At least I hope so, so the price will come down)
Sam Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I just can't afford side imaging now. Being retired, we've found the only way to get along is to not buy anything on credit - payments will kill ya. Electronics always start out expensive when they're new, then the price goes 'way down in a few years - and that's what I'm waiting for with side imaging. In the meantime I need to upgrade my 'scope, and I do like Humminbird. I need one with GPS included, and I'd like a color screen. Right now I'm looking at the 700 series, specifically the 788 CI or 797 CI in the $550. to $600. range. What do you guys think of those rigs?
jeb Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 I'm not familiar with the 788. The 797 is a good unit with SI. It did just recently get the free DI update, too. I have a 798, which is the newer version of the 797. It has a bigger screen, faster processor and denser screen pixels. There are some guys on another forum in this thread that say they're getting the 798 for CHEAP from Gander Mt right now. Might be worth a look. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha

The 788 is a 640x640 screen with over 4000 watts and GPS nothing wrong with that, still give you great vertical pictures, and still does not break the bank!! But I would really start looking around right they have stopped making the 797c2 SI series and started making the 798 series so those 797 are really going cheap! Even better the 788 and the 798 are the same unit one with out SI (788) and one with SI (798) And Like I say nothing wrong with them at all! I guided for a full season with the 788 on the front of my boat, worked just fine just a smaller screen.. Good Fishing Everyone Don Capt.
