ozark trout fisher Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I've been planning to head down to the Current River on the weekend of the 3 and 4 of September for a long time, to sort of kick off the fall/winter trout fishing season. Of course I never had the brains to figure out that is Labor Day weekend. When I finally put that together today, two thoughts went through my mind simultaneously, one positive and one negative. A. I have three days to fish instead of two. B.I will not be fishing the Current River. I was bummed out about the second part for all of about 2.5 seconds, until I came up with an alternate plan. Instead of heading down to the Current River, I'm going to be sort of going on a three day tour of as many of the good Missouri wild trout streams as I can. Of course I have some plans, but more than that I'm just gonna let this one go the way it will. The only public wild trout creek that I probably will not fish is Crane (I would love to but it's just too far away.) Anyway hopefully it will go well and I'll give a report when I get back. Now I actually know how to upload pictures too, so I'll do that. I'll be leaving on the afternoon of the second, and am planning to get back some time on the 5th.
Chris Barclay Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 That's a trip I've been trying to figure out how to manage recently. Looking forward to the results! Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
Gavin Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Tell us something we dont know! LOL.....Sorry coulnt resist.....Base camp it at Lane Spring and burn some gas.....Fish right there, hit Mill, Spring Creek, drive a bit further if you want to hit the Roubi, Current, then hit Blue Spring & the Meramec on your way back. Lots of little warm water creeks to have fun on too...Pack your reference books and have some fun. Cheers.

I'm not entirely sure whether I'll make to the Current at all, but if I'm gonna be that close anyway I probably will at least go have a look and see what the crowds are like.
2sheds Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I'll echo Gavin. 1) Skip the Current (holiday weekend). 2) Daybreak and Dusk on Little Piney, walking from your Lane Springs Campsite both upstream and particularly down. 3) Day trip to Spring Creek 4) Day trip to Roubidoux I cannot imagine a better plan. I'd be with you if it wasn't a 600 mile drive from Texas. Jason (Deercliff Furled Leaders http://deerclifffurledleaders.com/DeercliffFurledLeaders.aspx) and I had a great time last month with this itinerary. Lots of different styles of water with a variety of challenges and rewards. Fish light and be sure to run deep.
Kayser Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 You forgot about Barren Fork. Never been, but it's on my list. Hell, I don't even know where it is other than somewhere in the Current River basin. WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Gavin Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Barren Fork isnt far from Round Spring on the Current..Always think about stopping when I'm down that way, but never have.
Guest Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 I have hit barren fork a couple of times. Only two trout, both about 5 inches. Tough place to fish.
ozark trout fisher Posted August 30, 2011 Author Posted August 30, 2011 I have hit barren fork a couple of times. Only two trout, both about 5 inches. Tough place to fish. I've always heard it was tough. To be honest I had completely forgotten about its existence until you just mentioned it. It's out of the way but I would kind of like to try it, a little bit of a challenge is always a good thing. Don't know if this will be the trip for it though. I'm planning on doing something fairly similar to what 2sheds said. Chances are I will be down in Sunklands CA to hike this October, so maybe that would be a better time to hit Barren Fork. Okay, so maybe this won't hit all of the wild trout streams. But three or four of them at least , and that's plenty for an extended weekend.
