Be aware of the rules and regulations of C&R season before you fish, the hatchery puts up some good signage but it is up to you

to pay attention and not use an illegal lure.

Water is still very low and clear at Roaring River, the hatchery will stock a lot of lunkers for the upcoming C&R season, last year

MDC stocked 200 lunkers, 3-6 lb trout and 2500 normal sized trout 12-15" and when the rains came the big boys showed up

out of the spring, this year with little or no water coming from the spring, I don't think we will see the big trout like we did last

year, unless in the next few weeks we get some big rains, it would probably take a 12" rain over the course of a week to get the

river up big enough to get the big fish moving, of course 12" needs to come over a 4 or 5 day period, not all at once.

I fished a few hrs today, caught a lot of trout, most were small, a few were in the 15" range, no browns today, but I saw a

couple, I caught all my trout today on san juan worms, and #20 adams dries, it was a near perfect day to fish the 1 wt, very little

breeze and low water and blue wing olive and caddis were both hatching most of the afternoon.

I think it will be wise to start off on the 9th of nov. with 5X tippet and and a woolybugger or a leech pattern of some sort, of

course a san juan worm or an egg pattern proves to very effective most years, my best egg color is either apricot supreme, or

oregon cheese, but if we do get rain, then I'll fish chartreuse or hot pink, on the buggers, black, brown, olive and tan have been

working best the past few months, but if we get some rain, I'll use bright orange, chartreuse, white or dk olive, with some glitter in

the tails.

Best nymphs this winter will be the same as it has been the past few months, pheasant tails, hares ears, copper johns, zebra midges,

burlaps, sow bugs and small brassies, unless we get some rain, then I'll use more flash back type nymphs, like the copper john, or a

crackle back with a holographic tinsel body.

Streamers will work, I like a olive, black/yellow or a brown marabou streamer, these colors also work well for marabou jigs the spin

fisherman will use, white jigs are very effective also.

Fishing is designated as Flies Only. Roaring River regs. http://mdc.mo.gov/si...5/6136_3999.pdf

Make sure you use flies only during C&R season, no plastics, no rubber baits, no live or real bait and no treble hooks.

Single hook roostertails and jigs are very good for the spin fisherman, as are glo-balls, san juan worms, small thread jigs and chenille

grubs fished under a cork.

Fishing hours are always 8-4 during the C&R season, fri, sat, sun, and mon. Shop hours are fri, sat, & sun, 10am- 1pm

C&R starts nov. 9th and ends on feb 11th 2013.

Good luck, it should be a fun C&R season

What? No thread on a breakfast meet up in the morning? Where's everyone at? First time in ages I can make it down early and now no biscuts and gravy? Blasphemy I say!

I'm finishing up a 7 1/2 3wt for fishing the parks. What are the pros and cons of weight forward vs double taper line? My main goal is to have more fun with the average size trout I typically catch (been using a 9 ft 5 wt. the last couple of years). Thoughts?

With this years low clear water a 3 wt should great, expect good BWO & caddis hatches all weekend, if your going to target only bigger fish you might use 5X tippet to start with, so you can land the bigger fish quicker, if you know what your doing you can land most 3-6 lb trout in less than 3 minutes when the river is this low, if you fight em to long and they die, well then you only get to fish for them once, take care of them and we can all catch them all winter.

on most of my shorter sight fishing rods, I do fish DT lines, for me I feel I get a better cast up close, and i'm never throwing great distance with

a shorter rod, I'm usally looking for a quite (stealthy presentation) and accuracy.

So for me a DT would probabaly be my choice, as it usually is, but a WF for most people will work out very well, if your not just going out

sight fishing and you plan on doing some dry fly fishing a lot, sometimes a WF will help when throwing a little further and the WF will lay

out on the water very nicely, I usually go with something in the quite taper line, like sage had, Rio has their LT line it is very nice, and

Orvis and Cortland both have a WF that is a little more refined than some of the standard lines on the market.
