Good post. It's human nature to dumb things down and blame everything on a single cause, and it drives me nuts. Can't watch or read the news without being swamped with examples.

I don't think anyone is laying responsibility for flooding on MDC.  Eagles are federally protected so MDC gets a pass on them too.

MDC is 100% responsible for the stinking otters, and they could certainly step up enforcement to curtail the poaching of our gamefish.

They could shut down gigging on the "trophy" sections of the trout/SMB streams with the stroke of a pen.

If they wanted to.

There are trout and otters all over living together.  There would be hardly any trout if it wasn't for MDC dumping them in. Poor habitat, warm water...many factors limit their success.

MDC could certainly do things to improve the situation. We've been yakking about it for 20 years and nothing's happened. I think most of us have decided it's never gonna happen.

I was a bit surprised by the amount of jet boats.  On 1 gravel bar I counted 6 boats parked with a huge camp set up.  They were buzzing up and down the river all day and night.  To their credit, its probably the perfect jet boat water, super wide shallow clear riffles.  I never have, and probably never will see a jet boat on the upper big, I imagine that would be dangerous.

What is the reasoning behind not allowing soft plastic baits on the trout sections?  I don't know anything about trout fishing other than the occasional ones i catch while bass fishing the city parks in winter.

True, but consider the fairly large watershed above and immediately below the spring branch.  Dry Creek is a pretty long warm-water creek, and what is there, another 30 miles of Meremac above the spring branch?    Granted, much of that is spring-fed, but I wouldn't call that water frigid through the long dog days of summer.  So combine those inputs and that 7 mile stretch of "red ribbon" isn't anywhere near 52 degrees year round.  I think Jen had said only the upper 2 miles are really conducive for any hope of put and grow for trout, but that would be dependent on minimal flood events.

I’ve caught big trout all the way down by the Rafting company

Its red ribbon because of the habitat issues...The stretch below the Spring down to Suicide hill contains about 95% of the good trout habitat, and there are long stretches of unproductive water in that stretch.....Figure there is  only 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile of prime trout water  in that 7 mile stretch. It will never hold a candle to the Current/Eleven Pt/ or North Fork.

Granted, that you can catch trout way down river...but It does not happen often.

Here's one:

 Ground-based radio tracking

Is that a young Bob Dylan?  And why the heck is he doing a telemetry study near Scotts Ford?  And why the shovel?  Did he just bury a pile of transponders on the jet-boat gravel bar that Top Dollar had mentioned?
