It's another situation where it used to be possible to maintain a really good fishery there.....but now, for some reason, it just can't be done.  🙄

In the early 80's a group of us, including Ed and Kay from Springview, used to get in Mike Alreds van and go from Bennett to the Meramec because that's where the big browns could be caught.   And plenty of them. Nobody got skunked.   How was it possible then, but isn't now?

Mark, the owner of Adventure Outdoors told me he recently caught a nice trout under his bridge at Scott’s Ford. I’ll get the details.

You can catch some trout near spring creek mouths down into St Louis County.. Some landowners stock their spring branches occasionally.

I can think of a number of reasons, More pressure from fisherman, There are more trout fisherman than 30 , 40 years ago, more predators, more volatile weather. I hope the study comes up with the answer to improve the fishery on the river as it is a good bit closer than the Current to home.

Yeah, you CAN catch a trout once in a while just about anywhere.  But I don't think there are enough trout to target them below Suicide access.  There's a big, long dead pool starting at the bend to the left below Suicide, and that seems to be the downstream limit of decent trout water.  I have caught a lot of trout out of the Meramec from there up to the spring mouth, but it isn't as good as it once was.  I don't know why the browns aren't doing better; it used to be a good place to catch 18-20 inch browns (that seemed to be about as big as they got before the meat fishermen caught them).  Last couple times I fished it I had no trouble catching rainbows, escapees from the spring branch.

More trout fishermen nationwide, maybe, but not more trout fishermen that fish the Meramec.   I'd argue that there are less, and the ones that do and kill them are way WAY less. 

More predators?   A few more eagles maybe.....but eagles exist everywhere that trout live, yet trout still flourish in the company of eagles/otters/bears/ect.

The weather is volatile everywhere, even in places where trout populations are excellent.  So that's not a reason, it's just another lame excuse IMO.  

Let's just go ahead and admit it.....The reason is poor management.   The "biologists" are supposedly smarter, their education and equipment is supposedly far superior.....yet they flat out SUCK at their job.   Chain smoking, half drunk, high school dropouts did a far better job with far less cool $#!t to work with.  And they did it for minimum wage.
