Do any of you prep/till your gardens in the fall, instead of doing it all in the spring? Noticed my neighbor down the road tilled his under last month. I have my chicken coop on top of mine for the winter to add that fertilizer. Just curious.

Tilling old stuff over in fall lets it compost over winter.  Planting a green cover crop in late fall then turning it over helps too.

When I had a big garden, I tilled it in the fall when everything was done one.  Then I would do it again in the late winter after the ground thawed.

If I had chicken manure or a lot of compost on it I would fall till it under.  If I had a green cover crop would always wait till spring.  I liked to have something green and growing all winter when possible.

  • 1 month later...

I try to take into consideration it takes lime six months to do anything.

My Garden is tilled but going to put a bunch of Peat Moss and Vermiculite on it and work it in. Plus going to get a bunch of worms.

Oh I have a Soil Test run every couple years.

I have couple things I have to watch.  Wood Ash and Chicken House cleanings.
