  1. Hit the water about 630 just down from the outlet. Throwing #4 tan sculpin on 8wt with sinking line. Only caught one but it was a beauty, one of the better Rainbows on a fly rod for me. After an hour I switched to 5wt with floating line and struggled to get much going. Finally hooked a couple on a copper midge size 18, but that bite shut off pretty quickly. Last two were in a #6 olive sculpin I picked up last night at Phil's. More interest in this than anything, but all smaller fish in 12" range. Lot of chasing and activity as I stripped it back. Didn't see a lot of fish even until 930, just a few here and there. Lot more visible as the morning wore on. Lessons learned, will hit again in the morning.
  2. Just got in town a couple hours ago. Ran over with the intent to pick up a couple Sculpin and Jackson talked me in to over $50 of goodies by the time we were done. He is quite a salesman! Wife got to meet him too Now we'll see in the morning if we can make it work.
  3. Headed down tomorrow for a couple days & the forecast looks like we will see rain. Do you guys change your approach at all when it is raining or overcast for extended periods? Not taking a boat so I will be wading in the Trophy area. Will probably try it at night after they shut down a couple units also, seem to be consistently cutting flow around 2200 most evenings. Any recent trip reports from the after hours crew? Saw the Mousing thread recently, that looks like a lot of fun. Growing up in Michigan that was a favorite tactic for Browns after dark in the northern part of the state. Thank you!
  4. How was your trip, did he enjoy it? We use the handicap piers briefly so my 3 yr old daughter can "fish" a little like Dad before she gets bored but would vacate immediately if someone needed it. Sidebar, but it is very nice when adults are up there fishing and see us come up. They always step off and go wade so she can fish for a few minutes. I try to thank them for their thoughtfullness, they don't have to do that.
  5. After handling these last night I can see as where a little more weight would be helpful. Still interested in trying them. They are lighter tan colored than I expected, was thinking they would be more Olive hued based on pictures. You throwing on a sinking line or just sinking tip? I guess it would depend if you were wading or off a boat and how much water is running......
  6. You guys ever see these? Just ordered some from a web site out west. Called a "Tanneycomo Sculpin". Curious if that is what OP is referring to.....
  7. I have always wondered why you don't read more about people using them? We throw F9-11 sized stickbaits all over with some success, why wouldn't big streamers work? There are some ridiculous sized fish all over the lake- I can't believe those 5# plus Browns wouldn't like a circus peanut or zoo cougar, but you never really hear about guys using them. Good excuse to spend more time hanging out down there and trying to figure it out...... Thank you guys, appreciate you taking the time to reply. Dave
  8. Didn't want to hijack the thread about fishing streamers in running water, but have been thinking about my next trip down and trying some night fishing. What do you guys throw in the summer after dark in the Trophy area? Haven’t done it in a few years and mainly stuck to black wooly buggers back then. Also, you move the streamer size up dramatically? What about in the fall when the run is on? I have a trip scheduled for third week of Oct again this year and want to throw the 8wt a little bit more but don't have much October experience. 90% of my trips have been in Feb and a few in spring and summer. Just started making an Oct trip recently. Thank you!
  9. Anyone go last night? Curious what was said about the Hatchery and any other interesting info......
  10. Reporting back in: Sat- got out about 300pm Sat afternoon and fished until 530pm. Caught one nice Rainbow on a brown beadhead wooley worm on sinking line stripping it (throwing the 8wt). Had a hard time, water was coming up and by the time I left you were standing under the trees trying to roll cast. Saw very little being caught, except a few out of guys running up in boats. They seemed to be doing better. Sun- Back out around 930 until 1230. Caught one decent Brown on a dark green beadhead egg and a smaller Rainbow on a tungsten green scud (16) dropper below a brown San Juan worm. Guys seemed to be doing pretty well, I just couldnt get it going. They were jumping all over, saw some really beautiful fish both in and out of the water. Best fish I saw hooked was a Brown about 150' down from the outlet, swam close enough I could see it a couple times. Solid 5+ pounds, broke off after five or ten minutes. Lot of guys using 6 or 7X and getting broke off it seemed like. I need to get down there more in October, this will NOT be my last trip when the Browns are up!
  11. That is very interesting, counter to what I was thinking. Glad I asked, I can use the set up I normally would the Trophy area. Have to work on the go slow and take it easy. Hard not to get excited when you get down there so infrequently. I haven't used my 8wt yet, I may have to fling some big streamers just to justify my purchase though. Tough to work it in on a trip to BSSP or Meramec Springs....
  12. I always get down to Tanneycomo in Feb or March, have never made it in October. Looks like there is a good chance I can spend this weekend fishing while my wife and little one play with the in-laws. Plan on hitting the trophy area wading, any advice on things to try? Yes I know the search button is my friend, I am reading as much as I can before we leave. Have always read about the Brown's running in fall but haven't really had the opportunity before. Taking both the 5wt and 8wt, but if it was worth a shot at a big one I would throw big streamers with the 8wt. Never caught anything over 5# in the 15 years I have been going down there, but would like to change that. My usual tactic is to go hang out in Phil’s shop for a bit and see what is working, can always try that when I get there. Dave
  13. I heard many of the above comments sitting on the bank beside a gentleman that had fished here for years. He was also quite displeased with the state of affairs over the last several years. His parting comment was I should revisit Montauk if I want a really good experience......
  14. Anyone have a report for this weekend? Heading down tomorrow afternoon, time is going so slowly trying get honey do's done.....
  15. I was just 10 miles north of Baldwin this weekend, went up to help my brother build a cabin. Talked to a couple guys, no mention of the Kings being up but it is early. Troutoramia going on this weekend, too bad you arent up there already! What a beautiful area, can't wait until next year when I will have a home base close by to work out of!!!
  16. Agreed, I dont worry about the overheating nearly as bad when my 7yr old YFL can sit and play in the water while we are hunting Teal. I barely take her Dove hunting and it break my heart, just too darn warm......
  17. What would posses someone to walk off with a reel or your spinning combo? I just don't understand the mentality of some people...... Rhetorical question, I am sure I will never find out. Was hoping it was a kids prank and a parent would see this. Lesson learned I guess, but I hate not bring able to trust people. I leave decoys or lay out blinds in my truck bed during duck season, carry a cooler when fishing and leave on shore and never think anything of it. This will make me think twice.
  18. Fishing between 2 & 4pm in Zone 1 yesterday, halfway between two handicap piers up from the falls. Had my back up reel and water bottle on shore and reel was gone when I went to leave. I fished right in front of it the whole time, but didn't notice who it left with. Black 5wt older Bass Pro model, orange line with black sinking tip. In a zip lock baggie. Nothing special, but my only back up. If your kids picked up by mistake or as a prank, pls pm me for return info.
