flytyer57 can u elaborate on the Gunnison?
Don't u have some good areas down in ur neck of the woods?

Do you guys have an approximate date in mind? 20 hours covers a lot of country, and depending on when you can get away will have a big impact on your options. For example, many of the Rocky Mountain streams are unfishable May and June, while fishing in the Great Lakes region can be excellent that time of year.
Probably mid june thru mid july. Probably narrow it down to 10-15 hours from K.C. as that would just cost us 2 days travel there and back.
Smokey Mtns in Tenn. maybe or Colorado?

PS...If this was really your wife's idea, can you please have her call mine.
No Problem, she'd do it.
Really was her idea. Actually she got me into fly fishing 15 yrs ago. Her family has gone to Bennett most of her life. Back then I thought fishing at a trout park was like fishing in a bathtub but found out not exactly if you don't want it to be. Now we'd like to venture out and expand our horizons so to speak.

Sounds good. Hope he and others see this.

The wife has decided(yeehaw) that the family needs to go out of state on a fly fishing adventure. See other country and fish for trout in natural (not elbow to elbow) settings. We're in the K.C. area and looking for something around 20 hours away. Not picky which direction but from reading in here it appears a lot of you have trout fished out of state. Guide or unguided exploring all options at this point. With the wide variety of outfitters or guides available out there I want to make sure we are not wasteing our money(did that in Florida once for a bass fishing trip).
Any suggestions on where or who is greatly appreciated.
Will be me, wife and 3 sons,25,14,11. All but the youngest are fairly decent fly fisher's and the 11 yr old does pretty good too.

I’m hoping to get down there that same weekend, well , that Sunday and Monday actually. I started thinking about my “to tie” list the other day.
So far this is what I have on the list by category then order of importance (most are already tied up from previous trips):
Wets:
A wide variety of Zebra Midges*
Small(ish) Woven body stones, like a Montana Stone with a woven body (blk/brn/chart, olive/grn/chart, and brn/tan/yel)*
Copper John Soft Hackles (red, olive, copper)*
Hares ears
Partridge and Olive
Partridge and Yellow (I never leave home without ‘em)
PTN’s
Woven body soft hackle nymphs (variety of colors, mostly olive and something)
(I really like softhackles)
Drys/emergers /indicators:
Paraloop emerger (hares ear and BWO pattern)*
Midge clusters (Griffiths gnat, renegade*, and the like)
EHC’s (black and tan)
Foam caddis (black and tan)
Foam ants/beetles
BWO’s
Foam Little Yellow Sally
Traditional Bennett Spring Files:
THE Crackleback
JD’s
Marabou jigs
White floss
Glo bugs
*=My favorites
Love to hear ya’lls feedback as I don’t get down there in April very often either.
Thanks

Going to Bennett 22nd of April with the family. We usually are not down there until June so looking for tips on flies that will work in April so we can tie up a bunch to use in the park.
Also saw on here where some of you talk about the fishing outside of the park. We're not experts by any means but decent fly fisher's and would welcome any tips or locations to hit outside the park. We have a trailer down there all year so make several trips and get tired of the crowds later in the year.
Thanks for any help.

would a person want to go north or south once the spring meets the river? I think if u go north from hwy64 bridge u'd get into the canoer's. Any known public access's north past the canoe area? Anything to fish south of the 64 bridge?
