  1. Great to meet you Buzz. I caught only 1 small Brown there this morning, I went by Tim's Fly and hit RR. Tim says the rainbows did get stocked this week, but I didn't see any. Caught a few at RR, one decent fish. Was a nice day to be on the water, not too cold yet. I'll try and make it down for "Ollliefest" if I can. Thanks again for showing me some of the creek.
  2. Started at Lower Wire 0700. Caught my first mcloud a short time later on a red san juan. 6" and was actually almost fun on the 3w. didn't see a lot of fish so packed it in after about three hours and hit city park. Caught a trout laying on my belly (another first), ran about 10" that was fun on the 3w. All in all if I'm gonna have a tough day fishing I'd rather it be Crane. Plenty of small fish, looks like a good amount of trout fry as well. Hope people will quit littering this beautiful one of a kind fishery. Two nasty dead armadillos floating in the park section, (looked to have been shot), all those tires in lower wire, and the paper litter. I hauled out 1 large plastic target bag packed full of paper trash I picked up from lower wire. I'm going to go back for the tires next monday, unless somebody thinks I should wait for the stream team. On another note, do I need to be wearing orange fishing lower wire right now? (I figured since it's just muzzloader and archery on CA property I'm okay), but sure enough around 9 a.m. about 10 shots rang out in the space of five minutes. I don't think they were on the wire, sounded like it came from between crane and there. Anything I can wear to show I'm not a deer, but that trout would have a hard time seeing? What's the best thing to do besides yell if I feel like I'm in danger?
  3. Started at Barclay first light, was wading. misjudged my depth and one bad step later filled my waders before my first cast. Fast forward 45 minutes after a change of clothes and a good shiver in the minivan. Only managed a couple of bites on an beadhead olive bugger, switched to a crackleback, did a little better but no fish to hand. Switched to the Bennett access, 5 fish in 20 minutes, on a smaller olive bugger. Then I had to go. I wish I didn't have only 6 hours to fish on my day off but the final score was Trout - 3, Burninworm - 5 that's all that counts. Bennett access gets the save. All trout released immediately unharmed, biggest fish around 15". Picked up some trash, but all in all I've seen the river in a lot worse shape. I wish we would get some rain. Anyone know how much came down near Bennett this afternoon? We need a soaking if only to improve the odds a little.
  4. Well, I wasn't there Saturday, but I am a douchebag.... LOL. I definitely don't know what I'm doing, if that's the only criteria. I feel what you are saying, though TC. People wading a bunch through that tiny stream, making all kinds of noise, overfishing a spot. I don't mind fishing around others in wild areas as long as they follow a few rules: 1. Follow all the rules and regulations for the water we are fishing... 2. Keep all nonessential communications to a minimum. (People who have to fish right next to you and talk a bunch= douchebags. A little friendly discussion is cool for no more than a minute, but save the stories for the car ride, the store or back at camp.) 3. Leave the resource better than they found it. Leave nothing you brought with you. Pick up trash, report problems to the appropriate agency, pinch down your barbs, release fish quickly etc. I know there are other things we could all do to be less douchebaggy? But these few are so simple to do, yet so many people fail to do them, instead of approaching a special place like crane, without stewardship in mind. -Worm
  5. Fished from the bridge to the boat ramp, caught a few nice bows, and a couple of small browns in about an hour. Beadhead Olive Bugger, stripped kinda fast. The fish seemed to hit on the swing. Did way better than at the park, and had a lot more fun. Picked up some trash, and tried to leave it better than I found it. Shocking about the mortality rates. Are they the same for both Rainbows and Browns? Maybe aside from a couple of small stockings in the summer they should stock more in the fall? Best birthday I've had in a long time. Thanks for sharing with me on this site. I promise to take what I learn and take my kids fishing more than every once in a while, but not every time. -Worm
  6. Hi folks, I was looking for some advice about where to go fishing tomorrow and monday. I'm an obsessed novice fly-fisherman who just recently started tying his own flies. I was either thinking of trying sunday day\night wade fish upper taney, or do day of Montauk and the upper current sunday night. Montauk is a good hour plus farther from me, and I've been there before. I'm leaning towards it anyways, just because I know it's probably more scenic and I might find a more natural experience. I'm open to almost any trout related trip suggestions. Ideally no more than 5 hours from K.C. I could basically only fish tomorrow Day\night and monday until noon. It would be nice to catch a few, or at least learn a bunch about catching 'em. How tough is night fly fishing at either spot? What is a reliable night setup for stripping large streamers? (in terms of line\leader\tippet) Any other night fishing advice would be greatly appreciated to say the least. Thanks for any and all replies, Tight lines! burninworm
  7. Made the maiden voyage with the trolling motor in the fish hunter down at harmony mission today. Launched at 0600. More wind than advertised, but not really a problem. Action slow but steady on crankbaits, topwater fished close to shore. Missed a couple of huge fish who inhaled my topwater plug, but as they say it's never a good idea to pull the plug too soon. Real nice whirlpools helped to propel my plug out of their mouths. Best fish (pictured) hit as I was reeling in a large popper full speed not looking of course. As you can see it's missing a chunk of tail and looks to be pretty beat up post spawn. Pulled out and headed home around 10 or so. Anybody have any striper tips? Are there any left?
  8. Saturday at James A. Reed, on a small popper, about 6 inches from shore. Fish was only about 15" but put up a heck of a fight on my 6' ultralight. Sportsman' s release right after this picture.
  9. Howdy Folks, Name's Micah, 36 years old. Live in Kansas City with my wife, two sons (12, 2) and an all white 4 year old German Shepherd. Love to fish. Bass, Trout, Crappie whatever's biting. I don't really harvest much, (not in two years). You could say I'm trying my best to be humble in the outdoors, conservation minded, and to always leave the resource better than I found it. My opportunities are sort of limited here in K.C. and not many of my friends fish. I own a customized Sevylor fh280, and a canoe. Trying to learn how to fly fish and bass fish. Most of my non Missouri experience has come in the form of inshore saltwater game fishing in Louisiana and fresh\saltwater fishing on the coast of Maine. I've fished most of the large lakes in and around Kansas City, James a Reed, Roaring River, Montauk a few times, Crane Creek and a whole bunch of strip pits and ponds. I guess that's about it for now. Thanks for your time. Definitely open to meeting some other anglers for some trips and advice. -Micah
