O A F Winter White River Trip 2013
LittleRedFisherman replied to hoglaw's topic in General Angling Discussion
That's what i'm talking about, knew I liked you for a reason!! It's just now starting to ice a little here, got my generator tuned and ready, hopefully that will run off the ice!! Clay county basically got nearly all new poles in 09, hopefully we have a much stronger power grid now! -

Was watching the weather earlier, and it appear the first half of next week may have lows down in the single digits, but looks like it will warm up to near normal by our trip hopefully. Would several days of this frigid weather be enough to increase the demand for generation and flow? -
Had a neat experience today! 4 years ago during the last ice storm, we spent a week in Searcy with family while our power was out. I trout fished the Little Red every day in the evening for a few hours while down there. One day while fishing I keep passing this fellow fishing off the bank, he'd talk to me every time I went by, so on about the 3rd pass, I asked would you like to join me in the boat, bout 30 min of daylight left? He was elated, we fished till dark and he told me his life story, had just lost his wife to cancer, and traveled at work to keep busy and from being lonely, he was from the Texas area, and stayed on the river while doing business near heber springs.. The fish really turned on to, it was down in the 20's about this time, but we kept fishing and talking about life as they just kept coming in the boat. Well today I get a call from an odd number, and it was him. He said the predicted ice storm reminded him of that day, and he still had my number, so thought he'd call and see how things were going. We talked for about 30 minutes about life and of course fishing lol. Really neat how being nice to someone and conversing of life can make a new friend, and an impression. Makes me feel good considering how shy and awkward at times I once was years ago, glad I came out of that. Maybe i'll get to fish with the fellow again someday!!

Yeah, I've got a few fishing stories of my own, really looking forward to this guys!! I got an order in the other day, should be in soon, did some tri olive, (white, which is mainly for my Smallie fishing) Olive and ginger, and brown and orange. I usually carry several, when I fish the 11pt, I tend to lose them a lot more often than fishing in the white hopefully! Guess i'm still on for a Sat night fish fry, got my Cajun cooker cleaned up today actually be fore we layed off for the winter here on the farm. Fixing to put some miles on my boat finally!! I feel like a kid before Christmas today!! I"m bringing fish and "taters", Quillback has the slaw. If someone wants to bring some onions, tomatos, tarter sauce, etc, that would be great!! I've got the cooking oil covered, with this cooker I can use it mulitiple times before buying new.. -

I'm looking forward to learning from you guys as well. I hear ya on the wader thing, I've considered this over they years what would happen if I fell out. The coat I wear is a waterproof coat, that fits tightly round the waders. I know an old fellow that fell out of the boat on black river one morning, he just floated on his back till the boat picked him up, wasn't even wet and went on to hunt that morning. Hope to stay in the boat tho...lol. If it gets in the 40's like it says, may just wear something else, that's not cold to me!! -

I will try to do likewise in prep for the cold. If I lived closer, i'd hit the water with ya in the teens anytime you needed a fishing partner. I do cheat I guess by wearing my duck hunting waders and clothes, but it works, as long as I keep my hands tended to I'm usually comfortable! Polypropelene thermals also are very good!! -

Ham, I saw a show were F&S Hookshots did a show on the White, with Crazy Mike. They didn't say if they were Zig jigs, but they were marabou ones like them. They were literally whipping the line off the water violently when they jigged them, never seen anything like that. Said it made them fall backwards or something? Richard doesn't seem to so that, just a pop and drop, that kinda how I try to do mine. -

I sure wouldn't take this as wrote in stone, but here's an accuweather forcast for that weekend. Looks like just below avg. temps if it holds. http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/buffalo-city-ar/72653/daily-weather-forecast/2122913?day=11 -

Quillback, here's a clip from Wildman's outdoor show they air in Little Rock where he fished with Richard with the Zig Jig, pretty good clip here on how its used. Love to get into some browns like they did here!! -

Quillback, don't know if anybody carries them up there, but if you go to zigjig.net, you can order then, if you ordered some tonight, i'd bet you'd have them by weekend, usually very fast turnaround with them! Just ordered some last night, got some more 1/16 and 1/8 oz. olive ginger, tri olive, white and brown and orange usually cover it. Ham and others with more experience could chime in on this. I"m bringing all my jerkbaits just in case, would love to throw a pointer for a 20 plus incher, but don't sound like there's been heavy flows lately.. -

I'm thinking about bringing the kayak just in case, probably will stick with the boat since guys may count on a boat to fish out of. I looked today at an accuweather forecast 2 weeks out, according to it may be in the upper 30's, but they change it so often not putting much weight on that yet.. -

Here's a show that Hookshots had a year ago on the white, notice how they are whipping the line off the water while jig fishing. It's not like I try to do the pop and drop with the zig jig. Anyhow, pretty neat show they put on here.. http://www.fieldandstream.com/videos/fieldandstream/hook-shots/2012/05/fs-hook-shots-episode-3-season-4-arkansas-trout-rampage -

Ham, thanks, just PM'd you asking you this stuff..lol. I'm trying to get geared up for the trip, living here in the delta, most of this stuff I need has to be ordered for trout fishing... Really looking forward to meeting and fishing with you, sounds like you got it going on with the trout and this technique!! I have decent spinning rods at best for this techiniqe, I've put most of what I can spend on higher end stuff in my casting rods. I got one light action TFO that is probably what I will bring, the other one that med/light, might be two heavy to cast those jigs. I've almost ordered a crossfire, but seems pricy for an IM6, but hear good things. If I was to look at another rod, is an extra fast tip what you'd recommend? Thanks for the info, Bret!! -

Ham, that sounds like a lot of action 60 fish in that time, was that on the zig jig? I think you and Hoglaw have covered this before on another post, but I've only got a couple spinning rods these days, ill be using them for the jigging, I think i have some low vis green 6 and 8 pound respectively on them (Triline). What would you guys recommend, this line need to be replaced anyways on these reels, been about a year probably. I've went to flouro on a couple of my casting rods for smallies, LOVE that for my tube and senko rigs. What about the zigs? Think I've heard you guys talk about the NanoFil being good for spinning reels and sensitivity? Cody is using braid i think, haven't bass fished with braid since spiderwire came out in the early 90's, went back to mono after awile and never went back. Just been using it for Catfish. I've got a light action 6.5 foot and a med/light 7foot TFO spinning that i'll be bringing.. -
Thanks Wayne, I actually think I remember when this happened, it wasn't even a rock. It was a root knee off a tree at the lake near Hardy, the boat got caught on it then slipped off, think I remember seeing the gelcoat sink to the bottom. I've got some epoxy in my farmshop I used to patch a tank one time, may just sand it down and put some of that one it.

I know it's a couple weeks out, but I usually ask this because you never know about allergies, but i'm going to be getting new oil for my fish cooker that I can reuse several times after this trip. I usually prefer peanut oil as I love the way it cooks fish, the taste, and it lasts longer. If any of you guys got a peanut allergy let me know, and i'll bring something else. We ran into that one time cooking for a group of about 200, so better safe than sorry! I'm just making sure before I stock up, won't buy it till right before the trip! Thanks Bret -
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Yeah, if it's like today forget it, just got back from duck hunting and got kinda cool even with all the stuff I had on. As far as trout fishing from my boat, yet to find a day to cold, I usually wear my duck waders and coat. Since i'm bringing my riverjon to be used, i'll probably should stay with it anyways.. but as a big fan of winter smallmouth, would love to have a chance float with someone with as much experience as Al..! Ham or Hoglaw, what the flows been like on the White, would love to get on a jerkbait bite while we are there on top of the zigjig.. -

Cody, it's looking more like I may be able to make this a two day event as well. Al if I do, I may bring my Kayak, a chance to float the Buffalo might be something I couldn't let pass!! Thinking I could strap it down in my Riverboat and bring both! Long as I got room for the fish cooker!! -
