  1. Anyone around St. Louis , Mo. looking for a very good 98 Krag Sporter 30-40? Military peep sights. Recently fired with Remington 30-40. 2 in. pattern at 25 yds. free standing with sling. Recently checked out by gunsmith at Top Gun range in Arnold, Mo. Rifle had not been fired for 40 years before inspection by smith.
  2. That is a heck of a big round. I've shot 50 cal S&W and a 56 cal Walker Colt black powder replica. Both will jolt and twist your forearm but the Walker is in a class of it's own. The powder flare alone would scare most people. By the way, it is obvious that the 45-70 is a two handed weapon.
  3. The deep shad schools are also used by whites, wipers, and catfish. I've never caught crappie on mid channel schools and gar feed much shallower. I catch a lot of deep drum during the year but can't remember catching one in mid channel.
  4. I think this should be in this forum and not the one I originaly posted. LOZman There are two main things you need to fish deep shad schools--good electronics and patience. When shad schools gather at 30-55 ft. in early summer, it is usually in mid channel of the main arm of the lake. The schools are huge, sometimes football field size or larger. Many of the large bass you hunted in the spring have moved to feed on these deep schools. The thermocline rule can be thrown out when fishing deep schools. If there is enough oxygen for shad schools, there is enough oxygen for bass to feed on the schools. Consider the shad schools as a type of stucture in the lake. Two types of bass feed on these schools. Smaller bass, usually in schools, that appear to the sides of the shad and larger bass that will be under the shad school. Large bass are lazy and will wait for the smaller bass to attack the shad. Stunned shad will fall below the shad school to the large bass. Sometimes it helps to fish the small bass schools to the sides to turn the fish on before you go for the large bass. Electronics: this is a case where the more power the unit has, the better. Set the unit to manual mode and adjust the sensitivity until you can see your lure at the depth you want to fish. This way you can see bass approach your lure and can tell if they are in a feeding or negative mode. Remember that if the smaller bass schools aren't feeding, the large bass probably aren't either. You will not be able to see the large bass under the shad schools. Techniques: vertical jigging is the best way to fish deep schools. Large grubs(9-12 in.), jigging spoons, "Little George", large lipless crankbaits can all be jigged through and below the shad schools. Large lazy bass are looking for a meal---not a snack. Some other ideas to try: 1-2 oz. shot arm spinnerbait, chatter bait, c-rigged rouge--all cast ahead as far as you can, counted down to the depth you need and fished back through the shad school. Patience: remember that you are fishing deep. The fish feed sporadically throughout the day. If they are not biting, fish other areas and come back later. Don't spend more than 15-20 minutes and watch your electronics to see the bass's mode. My best morning fishing this strategy: first nine bass caught all over four pounds. Good Fishing!
  5. I have number of handguns for carry and competetion. Carry weapons are Walther PPKs .380 and Kimber Tactical Ultra .45. My competetion .45 acp's were made by Harvey Cassin in 1964 for my mentor to use in the 1965 National Pistol Championship at Camp Perry. My mentor died before the championship and I purchased them from his estate. Cassin called his .45 the "Supreme" and it is supreme. He only made 8 Supreme's before his death and I own 2 of them. I don't compete anymore but still fire them. As for as concealed carry, as a retired intel guy my motto is "never leave home without it". I still throw a couple of hundred rounds downrange each week. For defensive shooting, I do not use sights.
  6. 300 gr.? If you go to Top Gun range let me know. I gotta see this thing go boom.

  8. Hello, I learned about this forum from DChance. I am a deep water angler who learned to fish on highland lakes in the 1950-60's. I am a former tourney guy who now fishes for fun. I learned my deep water tactics from my father and grandfather at Norfork and Table Rock. I now split my time between St. Louis and Lake of the Ozarks. I am a BassCat guy and run a Puma. You can find me fishing around the Lodge of Four Seasons and anywhere from the dam to the 24 mm. I will periodically post some deep water tactics for large bass.
