Here's those pictues your asking about. I think this is a great thing for Taney and looking forward to see the final prodject. I just wish they would get those bathrooms up and running because the stand bys are the worst I have ever seen

Just a friendly reminder, Class will be held at the pavilion down at the river (Taneycomo). I think we will start tying there for the summer. Drop ins are welcome. Hope to see you there. Class will start at 7pm until 9pm. Then the following weeks we start at 6:30- 8:30pm. We will focus on dry flies for the next couple of weeks. If you have any questions please feel free to call 417-294-0759. They're still free and all you need to bring is a vise and your tools. All materials furnished by me. Keep what you tie and we will discuss how to fish each pattern as we are tying it. jh

6-13-07 I must say, another two great days fishing down on the White River right up at Bull Shaols Dam. Since Taneycomo is running so much water I had to cancel my last two trips due to high generation. I was getting tired of sitting home tying flies from being rained out the previous days before. I had to go fishing. One of my clients called me and wanted to know if I wanted to fish so I said the only way I was going to was to head down and fish the three units they had on at the White. The last time Doug and I fished it together which was a month ago we had a phenomenal day catching three fish that were close to 20 inches long with a ton more. We got a late start arriving at 1:30pm with only two other boats fishing it. I was thinking to myself, I wonder if the trout have seen pinky lee today. Probably not in awhile so I figured we would hook some fish right off the bat if everything goes as planned. To make a long story short, we caught fish, but the bite was slow and I think it had to do with steady generation for two days in a row and being the middle of the day probably didn’t help anything either. However I did get to catch a brook trout that was in the 14 inch range that made the trip worth while. Pretty fish I just wish there was more of them around and especially up here in the catch and release. I will say that was the first one I’ve caugt this year up there. June 14th 2007 Now the next day was a different story. I decided to stay the night and fish the next day with Summer. So she met me down there that night and Doug dropped me off at my buddy Eric’s house while I waited for her to drive down. We arrived at the dam around 9am with not a parking spot at all. There were boats everywhere and that’s the first time I’ve seen it like that in a while. They still had three steady units on so I thought it should be better then the day before because it was early and we all know getting there early could be the key. I’m sure with all those boats up there this morning would give a few trout lock jaw, but I still knew those trout had to eat. I would say after being there for an hour or so we probably caught six fish and then lucky Summer (I would put a picture of Summer with this trout, but she said she looks ugly in the photo so she won't let me post it) hooks into this fish that didn’t move at first when she hooked it. And then all the sudden it took off up stream like it was running a quarter mile. I told Summer that we would probably have to chase this fish or she would lose it if it got into her backing. I like to call it, “ the fight on the white”. It’s ten times harder to land big fish in high water because if they make a turn on you and create all that slack it’s a lot easier for them to shake it out of their mouth and get off. The funny part about this whole trip was I forgot my camera and here we are with this 23 inch rainbow that was in the net and thinking to myself, why didn’t I bring my camera. It always works out this way. One thing I had on my side was I knew a few people fishing up there that were guiding so I called Jimmy Traylor and asked if he could come down stReam and take a picture of this fish. I was lucky and was able to get about five good pictures. I should have them posted in a day or two when he can get a round to sending them. One more thing to mention about this fish, he was a little skinny for being as long as he was. I personally thought it was a couple of pounds under weight he should’ve been at. That makes me wonder about the didymo in the water. I believe iF they can leave the water off for awhile and let that sun get rid of it; it will solve some of the problem. But wait, it’s not over. After Jimmy left on the very next cast Summer caught a brown that was 19 inches fishing the bank across from the boat ramp on the golf course side. Both fish were caught on pink san juan worms. All I can say is those things work and work extremely well right now. We didn’t get a picture because we didn’t want to bother Jimmy again so we released it. After we caught that fish we realized that we had cameras on our phones. The only thing with camera phone is the picture isn’t all that good for the web, but it beats not having one at all and also backing up the stories is the only way you get people to believe our fish stories. Right? We all know that. So after catching two nice fish in a row I decided to go downstream and fish this one stretch that I knew the fish liked to feed on zebra midges. The day before, Doug and I went down there closer to the end of the trip and caught several fish throwing zebra midges having the most luck on black. The funny thing was they would only hit a midge that had a gold bead. Copper wouldn’t work at all, but at Taney the trout won’t leave it alone. So today while we were down there I saw a ton of fish and a few big ones like we saw the day before. I did things a little different today. Yesterday I anchored and casted to them and could only get a short drift. Today I wanted to just float down stream and really make my drift count. I also kept my distance from the fish so they didn’t know I was coming. I threw a little down stream from the boat and made a long cast. I knew that one of these bigger fish had to be fooled by this type of stealth presentation and I was right. After catching a few smaller rainbows I got rewarded with a beautiful brown that was every bit of eighteen inches. When we were taking a picture of this brown he spit up everything he had been feeding on and it was all midges with most of them still alive. I was able to get a good look at the coloration of this in the pupa stage and found out that they do have a flashy sheen to them. Kind of like a holographic look with tubing like segmentation. They were all colors with a grayish black being the most in his mouth. Although olive was right up there with being a popular color for the trout as well. It’s really funny that gold or copper beads have anything to do with the way these midges heads look like. I understand why wrapping copper wire to make segmentations, but the head looks nothing like a bead and it sure doesn’t have gold or should I say, a bling to it. That just goes to show you that beads are more of a attractor then what it actually looks like to a trout. That’s just my two cents.

Who's Earl?

Kayser, It's real simple. All you need is scotch tape and a hen saddle. Here's steps on how to tie it also. http://www.taneycomotrout.com/photo3_1.html Good luck!!!

Hey Leonard, I feel you on the net. I forget mine all the time, but I never forget a camera. Pictures are priceless and it’s something you can pause in time and reflect back. Anyways... good story and I know you can catch those kinds of fish on Taney in one night. All I can say is what a river. Also, I'm trying to find time to meet up with you guys, but guiding during the day has kept me sleeping at night. Reading all these night reports is making me wonder just how good it really is right now? Has anybody fished down below the point down to the boat ramp. I know this, if you’re not, then your missing out. I have seen some big fish during the day cruising through there. More then likely I will be going tonight in my pontoon boat.

This has to be one of my best caddis patterns for fooling trout after trout. I just got done tying a bunch for this seasons fishing. Can't wait to use them.

D.T. The moss has cleared out because of generation. The only bad part is it will be right back in a couple of days if no generation is scheduled. Where there's stronger current, you will not get as much on your line. However in the shallow water with little to no current you will see a great deal of it. And it will get on your line when landing fish or stripping in your line. They need to run it hard for a week and that will do the trick for a awhile. The fishing is still great so the moss is worth it I guess.

Here is the rusty midge you're asking about.
-
No I haven't. Nobody's ever on there anymore. I wonder why?
-
I have thought of all those things to. Somebody knows what it actually is and that's what I'm wondering. I've caught a lot of rainbows in my day and have never seen this before. That’s why I’m so curious.

Pre-Memorial Day Weekend Report
Jeremy Hunt replied to Kansas Fly Fisher's topic in Roaring River State Park
Hey Kansas, Just wondering if you threw black bead midges or elk hair caddis? Those will catch fish there anytime you go. Try it next time you go. You won’t be disappointed I promise. Last year I caught a five pound rainbow throwing a black body elk hair caddis in a size 16. It was a blast to catch a trout that big on a dry. I will always remember that park for that reason. jh -
I caught this rainbow down on the White and never seen a red dot like this on the side of their face. Does anyone know what this is or why it was caused?

May 28th 2007 I really don’t know where to start with today’s trip. I had Doug again with another buddy of his named Paul. We fished the whole day in Arkansas on the White. We decided to start the day up at the dam. They were running two units when we called on the way down and the luck I’ve been having fishing in this water have been extremely well. If you’ve been reading my reports, here lately we have hooked into a big fish every time we go fish there. Well, that’s exactly what happen today. Doug told me on the way down there that he wanted to catch something over twenty inches. And after reading my reports for the last week, he was expecting those same kind of results. Paul was an experienced fly fisher and the way Doug was talking this trip up, he had to see it for himself to. So here’s what happened, we rigged up throwing san jaun worms in pink fishing about 8ft under an indicator weighted with a number four split shot. We started fishing about 10:00 am with not a single boat in sight. It was kind of weird for being Memorial Day. The first cast Doug hooks up with a 19 inch rainbow along with an 18 incher on his second cast. I knew right then we were going to have a good day of fishing up here at the dam. To make a long story short, before we decided to call it quits before heading to Rim Shoals we caught four fish in the 18 inch range with a few 17 and a bunch of 16 inchers. The bite was solid for two hours and then the boats started rolling in so the bite was a little slower, but we were still able to catch fish consistently until 3pm. We headed to Rim to see if the bite was a little faster. I knew the quality of the fish wouldn’t be the same, but the numbers would be there. We caught some fish, but all rainbows so we didn’t stick around long before we decided to head back to the Dam. We figured if the bite was this bad we could do the same thing at the dam, but maybe have a chance at a big one. We got back to the Dam around 6:30 so I knew we had a few hours left. Now I know some of you won’t believe me and I wouldn’t either if I read what I was about to write about. We caught some of the nicest fish in those two hours then I most people dream about. I promise, when I say Doug and Paul caught fish every cast until we left around 8:30, that’s exactly what happened. Along with Doug hooking into a 24 inch brown that gave him a run for his money. Doug will tell you this, he probably missed a few fish this big without getting them in. And the same for Paul he had two fish he never saw, and NO they were not foul hooked I can promise you that. All I can say is, what a trip. They did have three units most of the time we were fishing and they kicked it on around noon. It sure made for some great fishing. We never switched over from fishing a pink san jaun worm. Now that the word is out, go fish some worms, you will see what I’m talking about. I don’t know for how long, but you better go before you miss out on some of the best fishing around for trout. If you want to go just let me know. jeremy@taneycomotrout.com

That's right. If you are fishing 6x tippet, then put on a leader that ends in 5x or 4x and never go down more then two x's because there is no give and take between the two. I’ll give you a theory…. It's like playing tug a war with someone who is 300 pounds and you are only 150 pounds. He's going to win every time. But if you were playing tug a war with someone who was 175 and you 150 pounds then you would have more of a match. That's kind of how tippet works. Never tie the tippet to the end of a leader that looks alot bigger in diameter then your tippet your tying to it. It will break and break fast and probably on the hook set. I also agree with mAngler, Frog hair is the best as far as I'm concerned. I also like trying to match up the tippet with the same brand as my leaders. It seems to get along better as far as the knot holding. Just my two cents jh

Bill, It seems to on the top a bunch. Downstream behind the houses seems to be the worst.

In my days of fishing, I haven't had many problems with tapered leaders. Maybe a few of them, but not enough to convince me that they're bad. I'm sure they can go bad or there some bad ones in the bunch. One thing I always do when fishing a new leader is run my fingers down it. You can tell if it’s bad every time if you do this. And never buy leaders on sale because more then likely they are old and that's the problem right there. Just my two cents. Another question… How do you not know if you threw a tailing loop and created a knot in the leader? That will create the break immediately. That would be the more times when I get broke off fishing leaders. Also, What did your leader end in as far as the "X". If it's 7x or 8x, I would never fish a leader this small. Why? because you don't have to and that's to light of tippet for any fish. I'm over those smaller size tippets because that's when I find myself breaking off.

I just thought I would share something that I've been working on the last six months or so. All these fish are called rainbows. They are from Australia’s water systems. I also have live plants that are from their environment hook up to C02 which is dispersed into the water. I guess you can say I put them right back into their world. Some pretty cool stuff. I love fish and this is what I tie in front of everyday. Anyways, just thought I would show you what I love doing in my spare time.

It's the stretch behind the main channel that goes through the old KOA campground. The one the Turkey Buzzards call home. During high water, it's easy to get through there by boat. I like to start at the front of it and fish my way down. Make long cast and you can really sneak up on some good fish.
-
That's cool, Make sure you call me so we can fish. I'll have some trips, but we can fish one day for sure. Maybe we can hit some whites if they're still running. See you soon. jh

Randall, I can't seem to find your footage.I know that's wierd, but it's true. I guess we'll have to do it again sometime.
