  1. The kayak I just bought is the Old Town Predator PDL. Primary use will be on LOZ (dusk/dawn when the crazies are off the water), so the pedal drive was a huge selling point. It has about 16" of draft with the drive system, so I'll be curious to see how that works on the rivers this spring. If the water is too shallow, I can lift out the drive as needed or swap it out with a floorplate before launching and just paddle. This was my consolation prize in lieu of a bass boat, but the versatility of a kayak -- and one that can cover some water, to boot -- is quite appealing.
  2. Haris - I checked in with the outfitters at Washington Park today - http://www.missouriparkadventures.com/float-trips.html - and they can run a shuttle from WP back to the 21 bridge access (3 mile float) or a bit further upstream to a private access (7 mile float) for $10. But, they don't start operating until April 1. The lady I spoke with thought there was a trail through the woods of WP that would make for a fairly short hike to cover the in/out distance on the 3-mile float (Gavin's bike suggestion would work, too). That seems to be the best solution I've found so far on a solo trip.
  3. Thanks, fellas.
  4. Well, so much for that idea. I'm energetic, but I'm no Sherpa. Thanks for the input Al. Anyone know of any similar types of riverbends that have relatively close (walking) distance between in/out access points? Big River is my second option - the 3 mile float between the ramp at the 21 bridge and Washington state park looks to be a manageable hike back to retrieve my car - but I'd love to hear if anyone has done similar solo trips. Not looking for honey holes, just knowledge about in/out accesses that can be covered on foot back to the launch. Thanks!
  5. I've spent most of my winter reading this forum and in doing so developed an itch to go after river smallies (CPR only) with the HighDef craws y'all have been raving about (which are incredible... I can't wait to put them to use). I bought myself a kayak a few weeks ago and have been scouting places that I can tackle solo for short day trips without having to find someone to park a second vehicle at a take-out point. Looking at River Round CA on Google Earth, it looks like it might be a perfect spot if there is a way to put in a kayak on the upstream side of the area (see yellow pin in the pic below). There appears to be a trail along the river, and if I could launch somewhere around there it would be a nice ~3 mile float down to the ramp then a short walk back to the car. Anyone familiar enough with River Round CA to know whether this would be possible? Also, I've read more than a few comments about break-ins at this CA. Is that a major problem there?
  6. I'm a long-time lurker that has enjoyed the discussions and tips here as I re-discover a sport I loved as a kid and try to get my own kids hooked. I'm hoping you all can help me confirm whether the attached is a crappie. I was down at LOZ from 4/17-4/20 and caught a bunch of 7"-11" crappie from the docks of my family's condo at the 33MM. On Sunday, we took a cruise up the main channel when my son said he wanted to stop and fish. We were near the cliffs on the south side of the lake at about the 34MM. Water depth ranged from 50-70 feet, so I dropped a 1/3 oz little cleo spoon and jigged it along the cliff at a depth around 30 feet when this thing hit. I didn't measure it as my wife and daughters were anxious to get moving again, but guessed it to be about 13" and 2.5-3 lbs. Given the depth, tackle and size I assumed it was a smallmouth (it was much bigger and darker than the crappie I was catching under the docks), but looking at the picture again the markings and fins suggest crappie. Can anybody help confirm? Thanks!
